@binarymalehim recently saw an original Lister XJS. 6.0 engine, ZF dog leg 5speed. No rear spoiler, just a front valance and rolled arches. 3 piece Lister rims. Dark green, almost black with moss green interior. Truly timeless beauty.
You know, I was thinking exactly the same thing! Quite apart from the hideous styling, which is a matter of personal taste, the detail, even what I could see on the vid, was frankly crude compared to the exquisite detail Retropower put into their cars. Having worked in some good and bad shops, I definitely see yours as one of the better work and product environments I have ever seen. If I didn't have to pay for groceries, I'd love to sweep the floors and goggle over all the doings! Richard; any day you go to work and learn something new is a good day at the job; some days are better than others, some days are better still! Where do we buy the AC resistors, please?? And can these also be adapted to a headlight switch application, or even wipers? Using one PDM input and one output to control multiple functions is an excellent result! 👍
Using C7 Corvette leads me to think the engine may be the Chevrolet LS engine range so anything from the LS1 to the LSX small blocks, or just go balls out and use the 572 big block
Hi guys, I love the channel and the work you do is truly amazing. As a little aside, how about a short pan around / review of the Hotwheels collection Luke and the CAD guys have at their desks. Cheers
Quick note on the "Multiplexing" arrangement you talk about at 28 min in! A word of warning in fact. Basically be a bit careful with using switching elements designed to carry lots of amps for only milliamps in a more modern arrangement. Old switches actually relied on the inrush currents to cause a small arc that acted as a contact cleaner, but if it now only carrys mA, this doesn't happen and the switch is almost certainly not designed to be "self cleaning" ie to include a specific physical self-wiping contact to keep itself clean. Sure, it'll all work fine on day one, and probably day 100, and possibly day 1,000, but at some point you will find your switch no longer, er switches reliably..... Fortunately there IS a really easy cheap fix, which is to simply include some capacitance in the switching circuit, so that capacitance can provice a 100uS of high in rush current, which then settles to the low mA DC value, but that cleans the switch each and every time it's moved. Something like 10uF is going to be plenty, arranged so as to be switched across the switch as it changes possition. I also assume you are not actually using raw battery voltage as suggested as the signal reference supply, but are using a suitably regulated voltage (5v or 10v etc) from the PDU. This keeps everything fully ratiometric and helps prevent noise injection. Often its worth also including a known voltage for "wire off" so your diagnostics can actually now determine this failure as well as OSH and OSL etc 🙂 Keep up the good work!
Love the 2 door MK2 (proper Jaguar... Just the steering wheels on the WRONG side) would love to see a Rover P5b 2 door (with a GM LS engine to replace the Buick derived V8)
How have you decided on the length and area profile of the intake system for the V12? Was it just looking right and then you get what you get when you map it rather than tuning it?
I’ve heard you guys describe the modifications to the exhaust system on the Allegros in not using catalytic converters. What’s the reason for deleting them rather than fitting a good quality, high flow performance cat? In Australia you must use a cat converter to meet the emissions test requirements even on a restomod build.
In the UK we are supposed to have all factory fitted cars and silencer's in place for a MOT, but most tester don't give a shit as long as it passes the emissions test, which most do. I removed all the euro 3 emissions stuff from my vehicle and the cat and it still passes the emissions test, also chances are these cars will be registered as the Austin which are so old now they are MOT exempt and also tax exempt 😊
Exactly I believe in UK the emissions has to be in line with the date of the engine fitted - assuming they go for an individual vehicle approval which I would expect given the complete change of lower body/chassis. If they just get registered on the original VIN then they will get away without cats, but in my view that's not OK , the cars should be IVA'ed and in any case have Cats and I don't see any disadvantage to that.
Where do you source LED headlamp bulbs - I have tried one or two different ones and they all throw the beam completely out on dip and are little better than a Beetle on main beam...?
Dipped beam led need to be in a projector lense if you're replacing halogen bulbs, otherwise the beam will be scattered everywhere if it's in a reflector.
You need to have the light chips in the correct orientation. Have a look at bevinsee V45. Designed to work in a reflector housing and give a great beam pattern.
@andysautomotiveadventures9587 some cars designed for halogen bulbs, the bulb locator in the back of the headlight doesn't always allow for the led bulb to be put in vertically. The H1 led high beam bulb in my car can only go in at a slight off vertical angle.
@andysautomotiveadventures9587 I'll have a look into those. I've got Osram warm white 2700k halogen colour match led at the moment as it's an older car. No adjustment in the blade with chips on.
Im currently modifying my 1961 consul classic ( consul capri with an anglia type roof) and i was looking for inspiration on the interior . your work on the capri trim is just perfect.. thankyou for a great channel.. is there any chance of actually seeing the trim fitted to the car .. Chris..
DBS with Corvette C7 underpinnings😁. Man, that’s going to be a fun car to drive. Incidentally guys, that’s nice burgundy chesterfield you have in the background. Can you advise who the manufacturer is? Thanks John
Awesome as Always... Can I Ask The Main Man Mark :) When you paint Different parts of a car, at different times, How do you ensure the same colour match ,especially with Metallics ?
I was wondering that myself and also do they add a flex additive for plastic parts which can introduce a color difference. Well actually ask Mark to ask Gaz ! 😝
The reset has served its purpose. Lots of new eyes on the brand, and only a very tiny percentage of those grumbling about it all were ever going to be in the market for a new luxury EV. My read is that it was a very necessary risk, needed to pull in a new global buyer. A real period of evolve or die for long-standing car makers. Like Volvo not making an estate car any more. Or Ford a Fiesta. Is nothing sacred?!? 😂
RE the Austin Allegro projects and the doors, as you were describing the aluminum trim and rubber weatherstripping and their clips/clamps that hold these two bits together. By chance could you share with me photos of how these items are fitted together? Reason; I've a E30 convertible and have acquired new OE BMW aluminum trims and the rubber weatherstripping (to replace the 30+ year old OE bits) and have also acquired the clips that are used to secure the rubber weatherstripping to the aluminum trim but could benefit from actually seeing how these bits are fitted together before attempting to remove those bits from my E30.
Jaguar Add I thought it was good different for sure. We’re in changing world and JaGuar definitely need change boring Designs nothing really since I Pace. Watch this space we may well be in for a treat in Design. As for the CEO he needs to resign after his comments not going down well at all.

I have been watching this Channel for years, but unfortunately yesterday was just too much, the adds and add times by UA-cam has finished it off for me!
Sorry to say i'm not very keen on your "cross linked" V12 manifold (31min in). The cross link pipe is going to be horribly dynamic and oscilitory, definitely not somewhere to put a MAP sensor. Not sure what your swept volume to inlet manifold volume is, doesn't look that large (admittidly it's difficult to tell from the video shots) but even with an even fire V12, you're gonna see large pressure waves and some helmholtz effects in the runners and plenums. Honestly, given that these days it ought not to be difficult to find a "dual bank" engine controller, i'd just run each bank seperately and not even worry about trying to get that balanced (which really doesn't matter for a EMS system doing banked closed loop lambda control. Obviously at WOT, then the balance pipe isnt' doign anything anyway, so there is no effect on peak performance. You could probably run the long term idle trim on one bank onyl if you really needed too, and do the slow correction on the other
Is it unfair, re the Aston, to instantly go to the thought that yank cars don't go around corners very well? Outdated opinion? Does precise high speed cornering really matter in a GT car? Bobby's crack nearly made me spit out my tea. Stu, along with the rest of the lads, are unreal fabricators. Can't teach that talent. On the Allegro's, are there no led options for the headlamps? The ones you have in look great though. Thanks for the video.
As I suspected! Cal - you must go into rehab for your LS addiction. This car's heart and soul its fine factory V8 motor and the twin supercharged version would have been more fitting. Now only the badge and body are Aston Martin and indeed such Chevy pollution will ultimately affect its resale value should the owner wish to move it on,
To be pedantic the C7 uses the LT engine but the choice appears to be purely so the owner can honk on about having a lot of hp under bonnet. The fact it will have a form of VVT doesn't disguise the throwback OHV layout, a bit like the C7 persisting with the blacksmith-level transverse leaf spring front and back.
Even from the USA/Detroit many of us are sick of being inundated with Chevrolet being touted as the go to source for everything that is fast. As a young and desperate man, I sold C's, and the workmanship was dismal, and the design was (and still is) baroque and theatrical. To put that into a Aston would be trading a thoroughbred for a sow. The easy way out, for sure, but with antique designs, and a firm grip on last century technology. (Unless you count and covet things like dual lighted opera windows and personal retractable cup holders.)
Yeah I'm not getting all these builds that are basically silouhette cars, Allegros, Saab ,Aston. All (will ) look the part but have lost their souls. A Honda, Audi or US GM in a retro Dress is not an Allegro, Saab 900 or DBS at all any more. All those projects could have achieved their goals in more imaginative ways that stayed truer to the original car.
33:20 i think Jaguar are having a Harley Davidson moment. They doubled down on their past/heritage/demographic to the detriment of a broader market. Just read the "woke madness" comments. So now when they try to move, the militant old men are more outraged than they should be about it as they see this as their own identity. You can see the flames over what engine is in the Aston DBS as were people up in arms over the 2JZ or LS in the other cars you built. Personally I think you should take on a hybrid or EV project, be that a flywheel assist motor or other flavour as I found the problem solving the same as Turbocharging my cars at the higher hp in terms of heat and torque mapping
not sure why a Corvette based Aston is distasteful but an Audi based Saab and Honda based Allegro are fine - maybe its me?? I await your quality finish and build before ranting further,
All 3 of those projects make no sense to me....The Honda is still a Honda even if it has an Allegro dress, ditto the Saab and it's Audi underkecks . The Aston looks like it will be more of a mix but if it gets a GM V8 as well as Corvette suspension then really?
I'll go easy on the TWR, I'm not a fan of the look...took a decent starting canvas and made a cartoon. As for the Jaguar rebrand...Cal, with the very diplomatic opinion (cant even look at the camera while doing it lol). Watch the ad on youtube, they surprisingly left the comments open...I think the people have spoken. They alienated their past and existing customers, it might go down as the worst marketing campaign ever. The car is going to have to be so incredible to make it back from that....and lets be honest there is zero chance thats happening. But maybe I'm wrong...
Regarding the Jag rebrand, I believe that this has been a huge success for Jaguar. The discussions about whether the design direction is better or worse are irrelevant. Brand changes will always create ire among the purists. On the face, it seems that this is about “I like it” vs “I don’t like it “ but none of that matters. I’ve said this elsewhere, the metric for success of this rebrand is not likes, it’s views.
@@ralphmillais5237 I am not everyone, but to my eyeballs the rebrand is quite good. One man's "global ridicule" is another's "brand awareness" Look at this logo again in 5 years and you will like it a lot more. I promise.
So-called purists are invariably completely wrong and in Jaguar's case they have absolutely no clue about what is at the core of the brand, so I'm pleased they're all upset.
@@gordonthomas4292 Indirectly, you could make that argument. However, marketing teams have exactly zero input on the quality of the offering. They are able to communicate business value by putting eyeballs on the brand. For the Jaguar marketing team, job done.
I'd say it'd be hard to think of someone with more imagination than the guy who cooked up the idea for these Allegros... and the second one is a gift for his brother.
Re the Jaguar "re-brand". Compare the new Range Rover against the new Jaguar advert. Aspirational English country living vs The Rise of the Idiots. Jaguar management need to read the room and understand that public opinions are changing and in general, people are getting tired of this childish, magical thinking, be what you want to be mentality. Hopefully ESG and DEI (the current thing) will soon be a thing of the past. To me, the Jaguar re-brand is a deparate last ditch attempt to save the brand. & that is why we need retropower
To be honest I find what you do indulgent and distasteful. You once boasted that you spend more than £150k on just the parts for the vehicles you produce never mind the labour. How can you call the Saab you’re building a Saab. It’s an Audi masquerading as a Saab which for me is an insult to a great car. If you want to build a Saab then build a Saab but don’t pretend you’re interested in the car, you just want to show off what clever boys you are.
Just watched this weeks vid and it was very interesting as usual. You mentioned that you had fitted led headlamp bulbs in the 2002 and I was wondering if you’d sourced some road legal ones as I’ve wanted to upgrade my own headlamps

Ah Sunday’s video installment- brilliant !! Thx a lot guys !!
That 2002 looks lovely! Never would have thought about putting a S2000 engine in there.

The way the 2002 headlamp relays are set up avoids that "black second" you can get during change over with other systems.
Getting one of Harry Metcalf's cars into the Den for some work and maybe an episode of his Garage filmed there would be a game changer.
Haven’t heard much from Harry regarding CGT charges for farmers?

Surprised you've kept going with that Audi floor pan it appears that it's got a big crack in it.
Inspiring!
I need to get me one of those hoodies. BTW, does The Den do engine and gearbox swaps?
Please use an Aston v12 or v8
3:32 and 4:01 bob fleming here…..that’s got it…..
like 7 !
Double Denim Jag 😬
not sure why a Corvette based Aston is distasteful but an Audi based Saab and Honda based Allegro are fine - maybe its me??
Views yes but everyone is laughing! Views is not the "metric" when the result is global ridicule.
Would not the metric for success of the rebrand be how many cars are sold?
@@gordonthomas4292 Indirectly, you could make that argument. However, marketing teams have exactly zero input on the quality of the offering. They are able to communicate business value by putting eyeballs on the brand. For the Jaguar marketing team, job done.
Why would you produce two Allegros the same but in different colour . Didn’t the customers have any imagination .
I'd say it'd be hard to think of someone with more imagination than the guy who cooked up the idea for these Allegros... and the second one is a gift for his brother.
Please Please NOT another LS swap
i love you, but i hope jaguar is trolling everyone hard.
i feel that moto is bad mojo.
Cal seems to like the "Faguar" advert. It's an abhorrent piece of woke crap.
Sorry guys but man up, they've destroyed Jaguar.
quiet, ya great big snowflake, you!
Go Woke, go broke! I hope Jaguar comes to their senses before what happened to Gillette/Bud Light etc.

🥇well done mush !!
jaguar = garbage
I have heard the new name is Draguar here in the states
Just watched this weeks vid and it was very interesting as usual. You mentioned that you had fitted led headlamp bulbs in the 2002 and I was wondering if you’d sourced some road legal ones as I’ve wanted to upgrade my own headlamps
