Definitely very backhanded. It's really subtle. But stuff like "this is to make you look less dead" means "without makeup you look dead" for example. Also stuff like "maybe you should study more" when talking about struggling with grades is condescending, since everyone already knows that studying leads to good grades. Then he follows it up by talking about how good he is at studying which creates comparison.
Also, he's being obnoxious by bringing up things like the teacher's divorce to the whole class, as that is very personal information.
