Ed Ansin owned WSVN, as well as WHDH! What'd you expect?! #JustCurious
*SPOILER ALERT:*
Sunbeam Television will merge with Fox Corporation to form Fox-Sunbeam Corporation (of course FoxCorp will be the survivng entity). And with that, Fox will move its affiliation from 'Boston 25' WFXT to WHDH Channel 7.
When this happened in the San Francisco Bay Area on January 1, 2002, NBC had to move the transmitter further north (the station, KNTV, had been the Santa Cruz-Monterey-Salinas market's ABC station until July 2000)
Exactly, and they had to import ABC through cable until KSBW opened up ABC Central Valley.
When KRON 4 was put on the market, NBC wanted to purchase the station, but were outbid. Instead, NBC purchased KNTV 11 for a much cheaper price, while KRON struggled.
2:43 - For its O&O station WTVJ Channel 4 in Miami (after NBC acquired WTVJ from KKR) until September 1995, WTVJ NBC moves to Channel 6, while WCIX CBS also moves to Channel 4 and became WFOR CBS 4 South Florida.
Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, it was illegal for a network to require its affiliates to air all its programming, or to punish an affiliate for refusing to air network programs at certain times. How times have changed.
not true.
@@sillygoose635 Actually, what I wrote is very true. The FCC had very strict rules about what a network could require of an affiliate, and specifically stated affiliates had final say on which network programs to broadcast and when. It is why all promos back then would always say something like "Next on most of these same stations" or "Sunday at 7:30 on most of these CBS stations".
NBC is now carried in Boston by WBTS Channel 60! WHDH-TV Channel 7, then the NBC affiliate, is now an independent station that covers more local news than ever!
WBTS is on Channel 60, Cable 10.
@@johnpat3622 Good to know.
WBTS enters the chat...
I am so glad that Boston finally got the NBC O&O after all these years.
I much prefer a network affiliate over an O&O. Especially if the local affiliate is locally owned.
@@jimtrue1465 likewise.
@@jimtrue1465 I have an O&O station as my local. Cable used to have a network affiliate but dropped it. That dropped station is the only VHF station in that market.
NBC said they'd leave WHDH ONLY if the station didn't air Jay Leno's failed 10pm show back in 2009. WHDH aired it, so technically, NBC breached the agreement.
They didn't breach anything, the affiliation agreement ends on January 1, 2017.
+New England One WNEU-TV NBC Boston? No! I think WHDH-TV should keep NBC affiliation.
Or NBC should buy WBZ-TV and change affiliation to NBC again and its status should become an NBC owned-and-operated station and send CBS back to WHDH-TV, make Boston TV great again!
+유동균 (DVSofficial) WBZ is a CBS O&O station. I don't think CBS will part with WBZ without significant compensation.
Ken Wiencko You're right. But I think it's sad that NBC will leave WHDH-TV. I wonder NBC should keep relation with WHDH-TV.
WNEU? It's a Spanish lanugage station!
+John Fenner If NBC leaves the station beginning in 2017, WHDH-TV will be a Fox affiliate like WSVN-TV did in South Florida. They will still carrying "7 News", the Boston's version of the newscasts, just like the way they did in South Florida. I visited Florida during vacation and I saw that there is a "7 News" in South Florida. They had the same newscasts, same studio, same logo, and same animation. Let Fox take over WHDH-TV next year if NBC moves to another station which is channel 60.
When I heard the NBC switch networks 2 years ago, I thought NBC returns to it's former affiliate WBZ-TV.
But it didn't go back there as I hope and thought it would have.
Oh well.
wbz is owned by cbs formally westinghouse
@@rudyiraheta80 it's still is.
@@martinmoore2468 whdh independent means wb & upn now cw & my network
CBS would never sell WBZ.
They mention briefly the success WSVN had after NBC left them in 1989. That is a much different scenario than this. WSVN came up with a flashy format that resonated quite well with South Florida viewers; much of that strategy was taken to WHDH with far less spectacular results. New England is about as far as you can get from South Florida in terms of news viewing preferences.
And then there's Fox: WSVN affiliated with the then fledgling network only to see it rise to major status. WHDH will probably take the CW; which will not only never see the rise Fox had in the 90s, but thanks to Tribune may soon find itself in an existential crisis. WHDH will struggle at times because of these factors, but they will survive; Ed Ansin tends to run lean operations which will help a lot considering their income will fall off a cliff (WHDH is one of the last stations to get compensation from its network; NBC paid a whopping $4mil each year for the privilege of being on 7).
+Jimmy Sanders The TV landscape was definitely vastly different back in the late 1980s. Ansin caused this by preempting so many of NBC's programs in the burgeoning South Florida market. Not airing some of NBC's shows was OK when the Palm Beaches' NBC station was on Broward County's (Fort Lauderdale's there) cable systems, but once said systems dropped the Palm Beaches' NBC station, NBC felt it needed to get its own station and acted soon after that. Of course Ansin delayed the South Fla. switch for his own benefit (World Series, Olympics, etc.).
Sunbeam bought out WLVI from Tribune
@@marcus813 nbc is on wbts 16
@@rudyiraheta80 Where? Not in South Florida, which is the area I was talking about.

I think that WHDH will become a Fox affiliate while WFXT becomes a My Network TV affiliate. It would make sense for WSBK to become CW and WLVI becomes an independent station.
+Ken Wiencko Yep! Look what happened to WSVN-TV, they used to be an NBC affiliate long before it became a Fox affiliate. I hope it would be a smart move to put Fox to WHDH-TV when NBC leaves by the end of this year.
+Ken Wiencko Then what happens is WJAR in Providence becomes the primary market in most of South and South Eastern Mass for NBC since we will not be able to get the signal from WNEU.
When Cox Communications bought WFXT Channel 25, they got a long-term Fox affiliation, which might be very difficult to break.
altfactor the Cox family is selling its station group to Apollo Global Management
that's what i would of said
Might have my ch.5 &7 call letters screwed up!!
NBC's gonna buy WHDH, just watch. It's an entirely different climate now then back in 1994, ownership is key.
However, extensive station coverage is everything. Clearly, NBC wants Ansin to sell 7, and will do anything such as breach parent agreements and switch affiliation to their lesser O&O stations to get Ansin to sell.
Sidebar, FOX just sold 25 to Cox last year, so saying WHDH could become a FOX affiliate is clearly an understatement. FOX could just as well buy up WHDH and finally have a VHF station in the Boston market to call their own (FOX surely dreams of a VHF too in Chicago, but every O&O and even Tribune-owned WGN 9 would never let that happen).
during whdh independent years they did air fox

@@revinhatol no fox will stay on wfxt & it's a dual independent station
@@revinhatol FINALLY! WHDH and WSVN are balanced!
To add, given the FCC is all too happy to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to anyone who owns a station that's willing to go dark in order to improve wireless spectrum bandwidth, this Boston market will indeed get interesting. Both WBZ & WHDH own UHF stations along with their VHF channel assignments, so the FCC would more than happy to pay either station or both stations to give up WSBK & WLVI. If this happens, both 4 and 7 will have more money to play with. Which leads to my ultimate scenario, NBC could buy WBZ and/ or WSBK pending FCC auction outcome and make Channel 4 the home of NBC once again. Same could go for CBS with WHDH and/ or WLVI, making 7 home to CBS once again. So whatever the outcome, billionaire Ed Ansin will walk away more richer, and possibly put more focus, resources, and money into his baby, WSVN in Miami.
+LaurenLover81 It would be great if BZ became an NBC station again!!
+D.E. Latham So, where to CBS moves? Back to ch.7?
+유동균 (DVSofficial) That would be nice, but it's likely not going to happen since BZ and the other Westinghouse stations like KPIX 5 San Francisco are now totally owned by CBS. The only possible way it could happen for BZ and NBC to reunite is if CBS releases all of the Westinghouse stations to NBC. Wishful thinking. :(
Channel 4 is a CBS o&o. Your best hope would be a WCVB/WHDH switch, and I'm not holding my breath on that.
Robert Patrick Thank you Robert. Sadly, I'm well aware that BZ is owned by CBS just as much as the other Westinghouse stations like KPIX are. No. I'm not being mean. I just find it frustrating that this merger could dissolve what I came to love. It happens. That's true. I agree that it's likely not going to happen for a network switch between 5 and 7. I just mourn what's become of those Boston stations. It to me is a total tragedy! Thank you again for your input Robert.
NBC should have buy WHDH, instead of switch to the new channel network.

I think NBCUniversal made a BIG MISTAKE to add a new O&O station in Boston. WHDH was the strongest NBC station in the country and nobody likes the format of the news department two years later. My prediction is for NBC to cancel newscasts on WBTS and bring it back to 7 and remove 7pm news and move the 7-9am news on 56. And the same thing with WRAL in Raleigh, swap the affiliate back to CBS and NBC will return to 17.
