  • (18 Feb 2017) Thousands gathered in Gambia's capital on Saturday for a ceremony marking the inauguration of their new president.
Adama Barrow arrived at Independence Stadium to fanfare, waving from his vehicle in flowing white robes.
The inauguration coincided with the west African nation's independence day, marking the country's freedom from British rule in 1965.
Barrow first took the oath of office at Gambia's embassy in neighbouring Senegal in January as former leader Yahya Jammeh refused to cede power.
International pressure, including the threat of a regional military intervention, led Jammeh to finally accept his December election loss and fly into exile.
Hundreds of thousands of Gambians welcomed Barrow's return to Gambia days later.
Barrow, 52, has pledged to reverse many of the actions Jammeh took during more than two decades of power.
He has committed to stay in the International Criminal Court and rejoin the Commonwealth. He also has vowed to free political prisoners.
