You need to either mark which singer is singing in the video or put the times on the video next to the names. You're kind of screwed if you lose your your place. The only way to find your way is to hear an immediately recognizable voice like Warren.
well, I'm a Warren Merrill, Milnes type of guy...But i think Leo and Cornell really do embody the role. and McNeil's voice is so well suited for this. and I do love What Milnes does at the end!!!
MacNeil for sure. When he was in his mid 60's and the middle voice was a wobbly mess, he still had an A flat that could knock down a building. (There is some very weird tuning in some of these examples.)
I cantanti vanno sentiti in teatro ,inutile ripetercelo.
I really thought Frank Guarrera was an awesome baritone from that era too, but he was overshadowed by that group you mentioned. He'd sing circles around anyone today.
Merrill's voice was maybe the most beautiful of them all, but he never had thundering G's and A flats. Mr. Bing let him transpose 'Il balen' down as he got older.
Are you positive that the one for Cornell MacNeil was him singing? He must have been very ill because it doesn't sound like him at all. Warren is tough to beat. Verdi probably would have cringed at any baritone including a high B natural in this particular spot. After singing Rigoletto over 50 times, I can tell you that this is one of the most difficult endings for the baritone in all of opera. The stamina required for the role is daunting at best. Lots of sustained singing, lots of dramatic outbursts and plenty of high notes. My favorite role. I must say this, most of these examples were really good and I appreciate the examples being from live performances; they are the most revealing.
I appreciate the effort, but if you went through the effort to put this together, why include so many garbage baritones, and exclude so many great ones that are even readily available on UA-cam - like Ruffo, Merrill, Bastianini, Tibbett, Granforte and Battistini? Of this entire list the only two that are really top notch are MaCneil, Warren, and the unknown Georg Petean. Also, are you sure the second one is Hvorostovsky? It sounds much bigger and different sounding voice than his - though it is also quite bad. Finally, there are plenty of awful ones to choose from, but I still Ingvar Wixell takes the cake for worst, because he alone skips the high note (highly uncommon in modern, though not in earlier times), sounds awful, and goes off key twice in this very short clip.
Horrible... Petean, Nucci, Cappuccilli, Milnes sound better and more confident than many tenors on their high notes. But other baritones. Why do they try to hit that notes (that were never written by Verdi as far as I know) and do it so heavy and bad?! I feel like they were going to die... it has nothing to do with the musicality at all...

There are no Gobbi and Bechi too...

Hvorostovsky,Delavan.
Saludos!

No Joseph Shore?
Cornell Macneil no 1

Wow Petean is fabulous. I never heard of him before. DH sounds bad coming right after him
leaving Bastianini out?

For me was best Titta Ruffo, Tito Gobbi
Gobbi never had impressive notes above F.
Joseph Shore?
Where's Robert Merrill? The MET sure had a stable of impressive Verdi Baritone Rigolettos in the Americans Mighty Mac, Warren, Merrill and Milnes!
Bonelli, Tibbett, Warren, Merrill, Macneil and Milnes are the greatest.
I would have liked to hear William Walker thunder out that high note!
@@kimmillard9445I had heard that his voice was not large. I knew him very slightly when he was retired and teaching. A pleasant man.
Sweet!
How it's possible without Protti ?
And Merrill, Herlea, Bechi, Gobbi...
For me, this belongs to MacNeil and Capucilli. Having heard them both in person may make me somewhat prejudiced.
Cornell MacNeil
Mancano Apollo Granforte, Nicolae Herlea, Dan Iordăchescu. Meno male che non manchi George Petean!
Cappuccilli
Leonard Warren was absolutely magnificent. But I like Heorg Petean, Leo Nucci, Hvorostowsky, Simon Keenlyside,
Warren is great, but all the other ones you mentioned are terrible.
And the great Tito Gobbi????

Xavier, it's not the same recording. Check your original post. The singer after Wixell is not MacNeil.
Campuscoll i know it, the one in the first video must be ill, iput the link just for others that don't know McNeil's voice
Campuscoll by the way it's not my post
Got it. Thanks for the clarification.
Rawnsley not here …..??
Milnes !!!
operalover42
1Warren = 30 Milnes .
Half of them sound like Nucci.
WHere is HERLEA? THE BEST HIGH NOTES EVER!!! AND YOU DON"T PUT HIM.... WHAT A JOKE!!!!
Also , may I add ~ WHERE IS BASTIANINI ?????
@ingriddoppler And where is Granforte and Tibbett, when you have Wixell and Hvorostovsky?
Titta Ruffo is missing too.
Do you think this is Awesome? It is! Bust Just listen to Joseph Shore and coment after ;)
MacNeil is better than Shore
Shore is horrible.
Warren, McNeill - a hundred times yes, Hvorostovsky - ten times no.
And Wixell. Wixell is at least as bad as Hvorostovsky.
Nucci is worse than Hvorostovsky.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 At least you could hear him in any theatre without microphones… So shut up! Nucci is a good baritone.
