I didn't know rubies could fluoresce under UV light. I have some ruby jewelry(a bracelet and a necklace to be specific) from my grandma with teeny tiny diamonds in it, but the bigger gems in it are the rubies and I love it. She has been giving me a lot of jewelry the past several years. A small silver ring is what started it all.

Thank you for great vid! As someone from Burma, I am quite proud of our ruby and its popularity around the world. My country is just so blessed with all the natural resources like Ruby, Jades and natural gases etc but as you many know she is not very fortunate with current political turmoil happening now. I wish my country swiftly leave the current situation and reach to the top where it should be. I sometimes think its possibly the resource curse phenomenon.

I remember when I was little my mom talking about red gems in jewelry, specifically rubies vs garnets. She said she favored garnets because rubies were too pink. XD
I was delighted to see the bright florecense of those first two gems, it was quite impressive! Like they were lit with an inner flame.

Where was that UV light when the red spinel video was recorded? And what about the guys in this clip, can't be trusted not to aim them at each other? LOL. On a more serious note, I think it goes to show that a longwave UV light can't really be used as the deciding factor for origin on ruby and perhaps not as a distinguishing feature from red spinel colored by chromium. There's much more to gemstone ID. A close friend has white marble countertops with pinkish red crystals dotted throughout. I'm sure if she found out the red zones are spinel or ruby, she might take out a pick-axe.
