  • This Avocado varietal was named after Al Boyce’s wife … Jan Boyce.
And is Considered the “The Connoisseur’s Avocado” …
Al Boyce. was the director of the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside California… eventually becoming the dean of the College of Agriculture when the Station became the University of California at Riverside. Al Boyce was instrumental in developing new varieties at this Riverside station… He went on to earned the “Award of Honor” from the California Avocado Society in 1961… His home and property bordered the Botanic Gardens at the University UC Riverside.
Upon Al’s death… Oscar Clarke …Who founded the UCR Herbarium and was it’s curator from 1966-1979…purchased Al’s property and inherited all the mature plants & trees…all of Al’s collection of Citrus & Avocado’s including the Jan Boyce Varietal.
This is the property where I procured the Scion wood.
My Father… John Radich… and Oscar Clarke were good friends and both self taught Botanists and plant nerds… so… this is how I met and became friends with Oscar…( who at that time was in his early 90’s. ).
The Jan Boyce avocado in my yard has not yet bloomed or set fruit... it was grafted in 2014 with 2 grafts in the same site next to each other…. One failed so it took it aprox 5 years to completely heal the failed graft’s wound… while the successful graft continued to grow…
I am still researching its flowering season….(said to be late after the frost season is over) and I learned that the fruit matures by May.... (at least in Southern California).
So this experiment is still on going….
I’ve got my finger’s and toes crossed that it flowers this year!
Say a prayer for my Avocado tree…. who is far out of ‘her’ comfort Coastal zone of temperate climates!
Thanks for stoping by for the saga of this Northern California’s Jan Boyce avocado experiment!
Have a Fabulous Day and get out in to your garden or Nature and have some fun!

Sorry to inform you of this, but your cover does absolutely nothing to protect your tree from frost. What you need is to cover it with some agro-fabric and it needs to go all the way down to the ground so it can trap the heat that comes from below. That will protect your tree by keeping it just a few degrees higher than the air temperature when a frost comes.

Jan Boyce is one of the good tasting avocados, but it is a disservice to call this avocado a connoisseur avocado. What is an avocado connoisseur anyway? Sounds like egotistical snobbish rubbish, and set up unreasonable high expectations that are doomed to disappoint. Taste is personal, anyone is capable of assessing whether they like a particular taste of avocado, or not. Personally I like Jan Boyce and have 2 trees in my garden, among over 20 varieties, but this variety would fail in so many ways as a mass market variety, probably would not even do well as a farmers market variety.
This puzzle me, why would a self proclaimed plant maniac leave avocado budwoods not grafted for three months?
On the positive note, your story on Al Boyce and Oscar Clarke, and how you acquire the budwoods is interesting.
