As of 2017 there are 4 running Napier lion engines, the one in the clip above which is the oldest and the only one with a propeller, the Napier Railton at Brooklands, the Napier Bentley racer and a Bluebird replica car.
@@garynew9637 Hi Gary, the engine you have seen at Omaka is a Napier Sealion, number 66948, the marinised version of the Lion. Peter Jackson has had re-engineered versions of WW1 aero engines built to power newly built WW1 type aircraft.
There are more of these engines in running order. The replica Vickers Vimmy 2 engines. Two cars, the Napier Railton and Sunbeam racing car of Brooklands museum both have one (saw them both running at Dunsfold W&W 2015) And this gentlemans 2 demonstrator engines, brings me at least to 6 engines still running.
Cooling issues at high speeds were the problem with these motors I believe. The top bank of cylinders couldn't get enough water to keep them cool at full speed for very long. I think modern technology could correct this by adding accelerator pumps to the water passages and oil. I think these engines suffered an early demise and should be brought back.

This engine is running on too rich a mixture, you can hear the crackle and pop of exhaust ignitions throughout the video. If he runs the engine like this all the time, the carbon buildup inside will be impressive...
@@lukassalzman4938 It has nothing to do with the make of the engine, it has something to do with how you set up your mixture. Everybody who knows just a little bit about engines understands that. There are, of course, people who do not understand...

There's an engine at knights of the sky, nz. Peter Jackson's museum.

great work! any info on how do I contact Andy Lloyd?
And I had forgotten the Napier Bentley car, that has also a Lion engine, brings the total at 7.
Wouldn't it be nice to see it in an aeroplane though.....! A nice S5 for example.... :-)
This engine type also powered the “golden arrow” world speed record car which set a land speed record of just over 231 mph at Daytona beach in 1929.
Wow that was thoroughly entertaining

Hard to believe that the design of the engine dates to 1917
There is a man saying ”hop hop!" at 0:22 and the engine fires up just in that instant - how can he have known that?
I was that man. If I had shouted that earlier, the engine would have started faster. Its as simple as that... ;-) or that was on random?
Fuck that is tuned well.
Not really...
One engine is always missing: Daimler Benz DB 605

Yes Daimlers Messerschmitt engines burn flawlessly!

Yeah, it’s popping and farting something terrible.
@@lukassalzman4938 Duh, that is why aircraft engines have mixture controls as well as throttle controls. Look it up...
MUITO BOM, BRASIL OK.
