  • Long tail mud motors are what started it all in the shallow water hunting revolution. From the original go-devil motors to today's surface drive engines. Why would anyone still buy a Longtail for duck hunting?

Long tail excels in shallow water with hard bottom and bump grind areas. There are certain areas that I cannot go with my GTR where my long tail used to go into with no issues.

No doubt! There is still a place for a LT. Its the best all around in my opinion, although its rougher on the body. Lol

I have them both a Long Tail first for several years and love it just like you say can get in shallower water the only good thing on my Surface Drive is long runs but not in as shallow of water Enjoyed it. Oh my Longtail is a Go-devil 25 hp. the Surface is a Copperhead 23 hp.

Appreciate the feedback Chuck. Both of your engines you have had, I hear nothing but good things about. Copperhead been reliable for you? Those little motors are cool. What size boat do you run it on?

I got a 1440 with a long tail 22hp harbor motor. Boat runs shallower than the surface guys down here. They say oh if I stop around there right now I won’t get back going for a while. I can jam that skeg down and gun it and it’ll get back up on step no problem most times. Got back up parts in boat. I took a wood shovel handle and cut it to the right length so when I’m running long distance I just put it under the handle and you just gotta hold the throttle down the pole holds the prop in the water and if I hit something it all flexes so I just keep going. Boat can run in 4-6” of water to hard bottom. Left the motor stock. Starts right up every time. Gets 9 miles a gallon 2 guys 3 dozen decs guns ice chest waders stools bunch of crap in a box etc. gets about 11 mpg with just me in it. Doesn’t do 30 but hey everywhere down here is less than 7-8 miles to a ramp... just me in it still does over 20. I built this boat just to see how a john boat would be for duck hunting down here instead of my airboat and I don’t plan on using the airboat for duck hunting again. 2 seasons now. And I don’t plan on getting a bigger boat with a surface drive either. Long tail is definitely still a viable option. For me anyway. I love the boat. Not too big not too small etc.

I get shit from the guys with shit like pro drive set ups. I have a surface drive but its a cheap option. I have it on a 13 hp predator and its smaller no reverse or neutral or anything fancy. Its basically a long tail but short and more compact. But boy i tell you i can get so much deeper then they can with their big boats. My little 14x 36 can run out of water and i can just dig it down and it will just drag itself. Thats y i did gator glide. And my buddy has a little sneak boat with the 212 and a long tail and he can get even deeper than me. Functionally speaking ours are so much better. We have almost no limitations. It’s insane what we get through. I think its stupid when people trash other peoples equipment. Not everyone can afford a $40,000 boat. Even me being a surface drive guy still have mad respect for long tails because they have options i dont have but i have options they dont have so its dumb to judge. I low key judge them though when they have to float around in a foot or 2 of water and i blast past them and just plow through spots with no water. I have had game wardens ask how tf i got back there even though they have pro drives. There are advantages to all styles so talking shit is not needed. Like i cant go 40 mph but i get where i need to go at 16 mph. My buddy gets to the same spots at 7 mph. No matter what us cheap guys can do the same if not more than they can without having to take out a loan.

@@jimboneutron8399 yea man. Like I said 10 mpg. 20 mph. But only 31” tall from water line at highest point the grab bar. I also have a big fancy airboat that runs dry tall grass etc too. But down here where I’m at there’s a rock bottom. When it gets shallow later in season it’s pretty narly sometimes with hard bottoms. And a lot of areas have short grass. Is it the perfect boat? Maybe yes maybe no. But there’s lots of guys I talk to every year that say this or that so thin so hard barely any ducks anywhere anymore on and on. Super quiet boat that can run all day and look. Get me there. Disappear. And limit out. Can’t be wrong.

Mrt damn the lake i go to get gnarly too. The whole lake is shallow and has dead trees over the whole entire lake. And some trees broke off at water level to its so easy to pop a hole in your boat. Bass boats or any other boats arnt allowed on it because how dangerous it is. Only swamp boats can be on it. But damn its a good duck lake. Has tons of wood ducks too. You eventually figure out the safe paths. I heard air boats are bad ass but the limitation is the big ass fan on the back hitting brush and trees so that’s probably a no go at my lake. Me amd my buddy hit alot of limits because the main water is hunted by bigger boats so we get wayyy deep in there where no one hunts and we clean house back there. Sometimes we even have to push the boats through in some spots.

@@jimboneutron8399 the biggest problem with an airboat is they are pretty hard to hunt out of unless you got super tall grass. Cause they are high tall boats cause of the cage. A duck boat though I can blend right in cause it’s lower than the grass. And I’ve got something of a camo trick you can’t do with any other kind of boat. Except one with 20 pvc rod holders all over it…

Been runnining an old mud buddy LT with kawasaki 29 efi on riveted 1648 . Has done great, looking to buy my uncles welded 1648 with mud buddy 35 with reverse as an upgrade, though my cousins been running with me and says my LT will run A lot shallower, stays on plain in 6 inches of rocks. Now I'm having second thoughts 😕 if I end up not happy with the MB I will sell it and get a back water 40 LT, hard to part with my current LT as I only gave 400$ for it.

@@LastStopWaterfowlOutdoors and now I know as I bought the surface drive and sold the long tail, definitely won't go as shallow overall.

I’m running a mud skipper twister 23 hp on a 16 weldbuilt ,it has a 15 inch transom, wondering if I would get better performance by raising the transom or not

get a stainless prop, and get it an inch over your normal diameter. if you normally run a 6, get a 7. because you will wear it down just like the aluminum one, it will just stay in that sweet spot a bit longer.
