- Grabbed a vending box of 1980 Topps baseball cards to bust open and search for the infamous Rickey Henderson rookie card. Hoping to get the Rickey plus a Nolan Ryan, Dave Winfield, George Brett and Willie Stargell too.

Nice break. Not everyday that you see a 1980 Topps vending baseball box break. I think 1987 Topps is the my favorite. It was the first year I started collecting and is full of RC’s. The Bo Jackson “Future Stars” is a “top 10”👍🏼⚾️
Thanks so much LS!!! It was really cool to open these cards. 87 Topps is gaining popularity lately. I like that Bo Future Stars card too. Sent one to be graded for the PC recently. Will be posting when we get them back. Not a 10 but just wanted it slabbed for the PC.

My favorite 80's card set was the 1985 set. It was the first to have Olympic cards and my very first pack of cards back in 1986 had some guy named Mark McGwire in it. He sat in my sock drawer for a couple of years until I moved to Colorado and found out from a schoolmate that the card (this is before Beckett) had a value of $30. To a 15-year-old in the '80s that was a whole lot. I ended up trading it for a 1986 Donruss Rated Rookie card of another A's future star Jose Canseco who hit 40/40 that same year and went up to $125. I was hooked after that. I eventually traded the Canseco back to the classmate and got a 3500 ct box of 1980-1985 misc cards. I went through them and had RC's of Puckett, Gywnn, Will Clark, Bo Jackson and so many more turning the $125 into $400 worth of rookies and stars. I get very nostalgic when I think about that time, it made a solid foundation into collecting that has lasted me most of my adult life.

I did have an 86 Donruss Canseco that is still in my screw down holder to this day. That card was crazy hot like you said. Those cards are responsible for a lot of money being spent on cardboard. LOL
That Rickey is one of my favorite cards ever. If I actually don’t work another 15 hours today, I’ll do a video of several topics tonight, and will be mentioning your channel to start the video. Can’t say enough about how much fun you have with the cards, and joke around. Cards are supposed to be fun like this. They always have been for me, and it’s obvious for you guys too. I also like how you like Dale Murphy. A really good gentleman.

Nice! Those cards look great. I’d say this is my favorite looking set of the 80s even though it was before my collecting days (but I did buy the 80 Topps Henderson rookie as a kid, still have it to this day). My favorite 80s set that I actually collected as a kid is 1989 Upper Deck.

New subscriber. Love your passion and excitement opening those. Congrats on the Rickey. My favorite player of all time. Even when I left the hobby for a LONG time I kept on collecting Henderson's. As a kid in little league and Pony Leagues I batted lead off and was super fast. I took leads off bases and crouched like Rickey and just tried to emulate his style. He is the best all-time to me. I cherish my Henderson rookie. That card and my 89 Griffey UD went to college with me and have been everywhere I have been. Tony LaRussa is 100% right when he called Rickey the most dangerous player of that generation.
Favorite set of the 80s? Not because you are giving it away but 1987 Topps is far and away my favorite. Its the set I started to really get into cards with and its just a fantastic looking baseball card. Stands out from the rest of the 80s cards in a big way.

LOL I am amazed at how many people are picking the 87 set. It's really growing in popularity. Maybe because it brings back those memories.
@@COGSportsCards No I didnt imitate his batting stance, he got too cramped down for me (I was tall and constantly moving in the box...legs, waist, bat twitching)
Glad to see 87 Topps getting its due....like I said its an amazing card design. I am not a huge fan of 86 and 88 (they are 80s so still cool, but just dont look great) so its like they took all their creativity between 86-88 and stuck it into 87. Im a fan of 89 Topps design as well. Its simple buy classy IMHO.
You guys looking for one more hit at the end reminded me of earlier this summer when I bought a box of 88 Fleer specifically to find a Canseco I didnt have for my collection. I got it as the second to last card in the last pack of the box........
That little ding on the Henderson isnt very bad at all.....card still looks incredibly clean, great shine on it.
@@jimmyplenderleith9471 Yeah Jimmy, the Henderson corner isn't terrible but still a bummer. We sent it to HGA just for the heck of it. Thought it would be cool for people to see what it graded after they watched us pull it. Good memories on the 88 Canseco. That card was fire back in the day.

1987 Topps was my favorite and 1st set I collected. Dabs from the boys for the Henderson.

Great box. I'm a little jealous. I've tried for 20 years to find that card in local stores. No luck. That Rickey is biggest hole in my 80's collection right now. Its such a nice card/ pose. Someday I'll get it. I'm happy you guys got one. Just nice to see on video again. The 1984 topps football is still the best opening until you get some 1950s packs. That was epic!!
Thanks Joe!!! I agree. Seems to be a hard card to find unless you want to pay up on ebay. Agree the card has great eye appeal. I missed out on one locally a year ago because I didn't have cash on me. Went to ATM and came back the next day but the guy sold it out from under me. I'll tell Rusty Nutz to go buy some 50's packs to open. LOL
@@COGSportsCards Great cards. Careful with really old packs, even BBCE doesn't have a grasp on searched beyond 1970s. I saw Jabs spend $3,000 on a BBCE box of 1972 box. The entire box was destroyed by the gum that BBCE couldn't detect. The video is still on line. Its sad to see Hank Aarons stick to 5 other cards and ripped apart. Sad, but a must watch for vintage breaks.
That was great! Vending boxes are so cool even if a good bit of the cards come out dinged up. I'm thinking 83 Topps might be my favorite 80s set, but 81 isn't too far behind.

Thanks Brian. It was pretty good for a vending box. Got the Rickey but would have liked to get a Nolan out of it too. Cool to hear your first cards collected were '89 Donruss. Great memories. My first memories were getting a pack of 86 or 87 Topps from concessions after my rec league baseball games when I was little before I started playing travel ball. My dad would never buy me more than one pack per game. LOL

As for my favorite baseball sets in the 80's, I would have to rank them 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 Topps Tiffany Sets and Traded Sets, 89 Upper Deck, 1980 Topps, 1985 Fleer, 1984 Donruss, 1988 Score, and 1989 Fleer ( Due to the Billy Card lol)
Thanks Eric. I always hated the Tiffany sets because couldn't afford them or even find them. 89 UD and 80 Topps are classics. And the FF Ripken is always a fan favorite!

Yeah MP, Murphy was my favorite player growing up so I PC him. Definitely get more excited about finding a Murph than Carlton and Seaver in the 80 set. Would be different if we were finding their cards from the 60's
My favorite set is the 1987 beacause the classic bat border and seems to blend the game to the cards better.

@@COGSportsCards Gorman Thomas is one of favorites of all time. If my memory is correct it was 1982 and I was ten. I was just starting to get into baseball. I was watching a Red Sox - Brewers game on a local Boston station and this guy Gorman Thomas just pounds a homer over the Green Monster, over the twenty-foot high fence on top of the Green Monster, over Lansdowne st. According to to the color commentator Bob Montgomery it hit the Mass Turnpike. As a ten year old I thought he was serious but only as an adult I realized that this was impossible. I was just floored by what Thomas did. Additionally, a few months earlier I read “Casey At Bat” in school and just connected Gorman Thomas with this mythical character who although he struck out must’ve been a tremendous power hitter because he was well, The Mighty Casey. Thomas leading the league in homers with Reggie Jackson in 1982 just cemented my awe for Stormin’ Gorman. That 1980 Topps card of Gorman Thomas stuck out to me because of this and because he was in that crouch which even as a kid it seemed like a unique pose for a baseball card. It’s funny what we remember from our childhoods. Thanks for asking.

@@COGSportsCards Back in the day Murphy was the best player in the NL. Unfortunately because of the time I never got to see him play much during his MVP years. While I do miss the “good ole days” before interleague play, I never saw the Murphy play except for in the ‘82 playoffs and several All-Star Games. It was because of this lack of national TV exposure that made card collecting so much more impactful than say today (in my humble opinion). My access to NL players and most non-Red Sox players was through daily box scores. Cards put faces to the names. Now with MLB TV, ESPN and Fox Sports, I essentially have access to all games giving the cards a much different meaning to me. Through my eyes, a 1980 Topps Dale Murphy means more to me than a 2018 Ohtani RC and 2019 Tatis RC combined. Don’t mind me; I’m just a middle-aged man musing about the hobby.
@@jayscards8640 Yeah Jay, I agree with you. The only teams I could watch were the Braves and Cubs. Never really jumped on the Cubs but watched the Braves almost every day. Good point about people having access to all players now. Never thought of ball cards being the only real connection of putting a face to the name. I remember looking at my 83 Boggs rookie when I was younger and always rooting for him.

Great rip I love those vending boxes I opened a 1980 vending box and did not get a Rickey Henderson, but pulled out everything else you can possibly get from that set. This was 20years ago and I think I paid $130 for it back then!! I’m not going to ask you guys what you paid for this box because I know it had to be A pretty penny,At any rate thank you for sharing I enjoyed it

Yes I have a 1980 topps set, With a very nice Henderson (RC) in it I’ve had it for 21 years now, I am looking for another one though,It’s definitely on my radar to pick one up soon and A Derek Jeter SP. Thanks

@@robg7656 I don't man. It's really up to your expectations. We just love opening older cards so they are really fun for us. Some people say we are crazy for purchasing them. We love them but no guarantees you will get your money back out of them. I will say the more expensive boxes usually have the better condition cards in them. Since we have opened like ten boxes of them you can go watch what all we pull and see if you think its worth it. If we were just flippers I'd say no. But these go in our PC so we say yes.

This is the first (and favorite) set that I collected in my childhood. I earned $5/week as an allowance (for doing dishes on Wednesdays). I would take the entire $5 to Fuller's Park and buy 20 packs of Topps from the concession stand. That's 25 cents/pack with tax included.

What are indicator cards??? Never heard of that before🤔🤔
Hey PSE, indicator cards are cards that typically show up prior to a certain card/big hit. Back then the sorting wasn't too great and if you found an indicator card you could anticipate the card order afterwards.
Indicator Cards were more reliable in packs, not the vending boxes
I'll give the Henderson a psa 6 and Ozzie Smith a psa 7.
