Top video because you EXPLAIN what you're doing and show where the hidden clips and tabs are. Could not have attempted this on my EoS without it, many thanks 👍 My shear bolts were sheared - I was able to remove them surprisingly easily by tapping the bolt edge at an angle with a centre punch. For the left hand bolt I had to cut away a small section of plastic near to the steering column to get better access to the bolt.
This is overall a really good tutorial, but I hate that you glossed over the “special screws” at @4:56 . Those “special” break off bolts are easily the most difficult, frustrating, time consuming, and most likely to break something part of this entire job, and 99.99% of people attempting this job won’t have the luxury of new, unbroken screws for the sake of a video. You really should have detailed the process of removing the bolts via drilling, or tapping, or reverse bit or whatever method. In a tutorial, NEVER skip the hard part. ESPECIALLY show in detail the hard part.
Hi! This my idea how to use simple tools to remove those bolts, hope it help ! And can reuse those bolts. ua-cam.com/video/V7JxEeqXNO0/v-deo.htmlsi=1PTk7wzRv1zz21Ph
@@genesismunoz6539 it's an M8 Torx, very small size but not very tight so a suitable flat head across the points will probably work, though torx bit obviously best.
How does this work with the immobiliser? My key was getting stuck. I bought a new cylinder and just changed the outer key part using the paper clip. Car started but died due to immobiliser. If I change the entire cylinder will it work?
To remove the shear bolts, use a dermal to cut away some of the plastic case with a cut of wheel to access thew bolts then use a metal grinding tip to cut a small notch into the outside of the bolt then use a small punch to undo bolt, use fingers/punch to remove bolt. Cut a slot into top so can use a flat head to reinstall, or better yet use normal bolts like a normal person would ..bloody germans.
Great video, good practice is to centralise the steering wheel in the straight forward position before removing the steering wheel then lock the igniter ring as it can only turn 2.5 turns towards each side, anymore will damage the slip ring….thats a costly part to replace, if its offset when you remove its so easy to get confused
For anyone else struggling to remove the unit from under the steering column. The rear clip just do with your finger from right hand side once you have released front one.
Thank you so much for this great video. I could not have completed my Mk6 Golf repair without you. Such a valuable reference. I'll add just a couple of points from my experience of doing this job. 1. To remove the shear bolts use an extractor bit and a drill with a right angle drive attachment. Extractor bits rotate counter clockwise and after drilling a pilot hole they attack the metal with a jarring motion that loosens the bolt. Be sure to centre the bit and if the bolt is very stubborn use an extractor tap to unwind the bolt. Once loose, you can turn the bolts by hand. Be patient and ensure you detach all electrical components so the drill swarf doesn't get into the small sockets. 2.My key would not turn to the on position so I could not push the thin wire in to release the key lock cylinder. This was because something had broken inside the steering lock barrel. So once I removed the ignition barrel from the steering column I cut through the barrel about 1cm to the key side of the steering lock pin assembly, careful to a old the key barrel. This enabled me to turn the key to the on position and remove the key cylinder. So I could fit the new barrel but keep my existing keys. 3. After reassembling everything and reconnecting the battery, which I had out of the car for 3 days waiting for the new barrel, the airbag and red traction control warning lights were illuminated. These went out and stayed out after driving the car 50 metres or so. My advice to anyone attempting this is to ensure you have the necessary tools and be patient and follow this video precisely. The steering assembly circuit board module (rectangular black plastic box under the column) must be removed before attempting to remove the indicator and wiper stalks and the airbag clock. There appears to be minimal differences between the Mk5 in this video and the Mk6 assembly. Good luck this will save you a lot of money versus a dealership repair.

Loved the video, BUT! If you have the same problem, I have, at least a temporary solution, that doesn't require the replacement of the contact or this much work presented in the video (which is the right way). When you try to take out the key, remove the bottom plastic cover, and hit the contact metal piece with a screwdriver or a ratchet or some metal. Don't hit it crazy but put some force. Then the key will come out. I had the same problem on my Volks and it worked perfectly for me. I still haven't changed the contact and it's been over a year since the first simptom. And currently, the key comes out without hitting it. Worth it to mention that, in my case, it was impossible to stop the car and aslo, I didn't have any problem to start the engine. Also, the same technique works if you have problems with the alternator. Hit it while trying to start the car and it will work. But in this case, I will choose to change the alternator as soon as I can because it will not come back to life.
Thank you . 90% of your help worked on a mk6 golf . My 2 bolts had been snapped off but putting a flat head screwdriver to the right of the bolt and hitting with a hammer loosened bolt enough remove with my fingers .the bolt on the left I had to brake a bit of plastic to make a window. When all the barrel was out the broken bit moved so I could remove ignition barrel with a paper clip ... your a life saver .
Thank you!!! Thanks to you is my car ready in 2 days, instead od waiting 2 weeks for a servis to be available. JUST one think needs to be stressed a lot: not to touch the inside of the new stirring wheel lock or remove the rod from the key without both being joined in the right way again.
Hi great video thanks! My problem is that when I switch off the key comes out but the cylinder remains deeper and does not step up making the last “click”. This let the car believe the key is still in and I cannot lock the car and block the steering wheel. Can you help me please?? What could be the reason? Same work as you? Thanks!
After having that same problem I managed to pull key out but the steering wheel is in lock position. Is there any way of getting this off now before I strip down as not sure how to drill in to u housing to remove the key housing part
How on earth did you move the steering wheel so easily without steering lock locking it, if the key will not turn? My car is stranded on the other side of town for the past month becouse the key will not turn.
Thanks a lot for the video, very clear and complete. Thanks to you I can repair my car in two days (thanks to Amazon too, that delivery the new component this afternoon). In my case there was antitheft screws, so some extra works to remove it (i use a screwdriver and an hammer, and I have to make a drill in the left side otherwise you don't have any access to beat on the head of the screw and remove it). So many good things and... good job !🚗👋👍
So so so helpful I have a customer called with the same ISSUE and after watching this video I got the parts stripped down only thing left for me to take off is the two security bolts and then I'll be able to take the barrel out and put a new one in
I bought a 2015 kia optima at the auction and the ignition key switch is broken, can I change the ignition for a used one? it will work? or do I have to buy it from the dealer?
Hi bro. Thanks for the video. I’m experiencing same problem. Is it necessary to replace the steering lock cylinder too? Can I just change the ignition barrel?
Brilliant video just had my wife on the phone frantic key won't come out on one bit time told hur to put in drive a ram it in park thank you helped a lot 👌🏻worked a treat 👌🏻
LOL finally.. Someone who makes more sense who takes their airbag/steering wheel OFF first THEN gets the side screws off lol. Every other video shows people taking that off first for some odd reason.
I've managed to take everything off even the anti theft screws, only problem I have is that I can't seem to realise my key from the lock and its just spinning in circles, even when I'm trying to use a pin to realise it
Fain' accentul. Merci pt video. Să înțelegem că piesa cea mai apropiata de cheie se poate pastra ca să folosim aceeași cheie? Sau ai făcut la interior vreo adaptare/schimbare? Merci
I lost my keys for my 2004 vw polo 9n sdi, if I get keys, steering lock and door locks from the breakers how do I go about changing everything, and presumably will I have to let the ecu know I have changed the steering lock because of the immobiliser, can I do this with VCDS and how do I go about getting an app like VCDS or similar cheaply please, any help will be appreciated thanks in advance everyone. Great video peace to everyone.
yes, before you remove the whole mechanism, you have to tap the ignition housing with a hammer and screw driver till whatever is jamming the lock pops out
Excellent video. I just replaced mine successfully. One thing I would like to add though- On my 2010 Jetta, the wipers don't work with the hood open. Nobody mentions this. So when you finish the job, and you are reassembling everything and testing, your wipers won't work if the hood is open. Don't be like me and disassemble the whole thing again, checking connectors, thinking you missed something, when all that was wrong was you left the hood up after reconnecting the battery.
Am i the only one that has completely different safety screws?😂
Top video because you EXPLAIN what you're doing and show where the hidden clips and tabs are. What if the screws are broken on min 5:18?
They can be tapped out with a small drift or chisel.

I’ve just done this job so posted a video with advice on removing them. I used a small drift to tap them out.
you were lucky regarding the two security screws... that's the hardest part... drilling them out and using EZ out...

4:36 I didn't have to take those lever arms off.
I glued a nut with jb weld to the screw head and was able to remove it easily.
G.R.E.A.T. vids AWESOME work ! ! ! 💪💪💪 Keep it up ! ! ! => YOU SAVED ME 500 EURO's, wherefore my biggest gratitude ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 🙏
Key is still jammed…
That's going to be a life saver to many people as well as save them a fortune, great detailed video 😎👍🏻🏴
What kind of screw did you use for 3:43?
@@genesismunoz6539 it's an M8 Torx, very small size but not very tight so a suitable flat head across the points will probably work, though torx bit obviously best.
Dude this is the best video ever! I tried to figure it out myself and I'm so glad I seen found you! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Same issue with my golf mk5 Thank you for very detailed video
Excellent video for someone who wants to do the job properly without breaking hidden plastic tabs. Thank you!
How does this work with the immobiliser? My key was getting stuck. I bought a new cylinder and just changed the outer key part using the paper clip. Car started but died due to immobiliser. If I change the entire cylinder will it work?
my friend. I have a question .. what happend with the inmobilizer ?? the car work normal?
Why is it necessary remove the steering wheel? I saw another video that don't do that. I am confuse about what to do

Can this cause the steering wheel to lean one way or the other if not put back on properly? Had this replaced on our Passat.

Thanks so much mate !!!
Yep works 100x better. You can perfectly get a finger in there to release it.
Absolutely fantastic tutorial. Simple, straight to the point, proper warnings in place, and no fluff. 10/10 video!!!

Any tips on how to get the lock cylinder out if the key won’t rotate to align the hole?
Where can i get the steering lock (for a not big amount of money)?
thank you so much for your great video. helped me a lot.
Just want to say thank you for this video... it was extremely helpful. I just replaced this on my wife's car and now it works like a charm.
Yo thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
That's going to be a really useful and time saving.

Hi after I replaced mine it says immobilizer active. Do I have to change control module.

Very informative video . Thank you so much
Great job!
Without a doubt the best video on UA-cam for this job. Top man

By far the most clear detail 👌. Most appreciated
I wasn't lucky with them bolts. Normal drill doesn't fit, don't have ezouts. Guess I buy a angle drill and some ezouts, geeeez
Hello I have a question does it need to be programmed after installation of the new one ? Or it's ready to use ? Tnx
Thank you UA-cam algorithm for suggesting me this video. This channel is just awesome. Subscribed :)
Very lucky “breakaway” screws

I can take the key out but it won't turn the car on. Looks like the steering lock is only $30
This video, paired with BULLIKID ‘s, 100%

Hey there. this is Liz from MXR, are you interested in any business collaboration?
I have to do this job tomorrow on my Golf 5. I guess this is a common problem on them
Hi thanks for you vidéos 👍🏼 do you know someone who want to work as a tinter window in France (Paris) ??
where in germany do you work? i want to change something on my car.
Thanks for that, very informative. Is there a way to separate the switch from the barrel when the key will not turn?
Awesome explained video in great quality, thank you.
Great video 👍
I’m having trouble popping the front of steering wheel, when I wedge a knife under the clips they just bounce back on bottom
It’s out! You just need to push the air bag out! I
Dude, you are awesome!!! Followed along and got mine out.
I've managed to take everything off even the anti theft screws, only problem I have is that I can't seem to realise my key from the lock and its just spinning in circles, even when I'm trying to use a pin to realise it
Sometimes is really hard to push the pin but not impossible.
Man, I hope I'm lucky with the security screws. I do not want to drill em
Great video,thanks for share
+1 subscriber 😎👍
Where can I find the part number for the steering lock pls?
Any idea if this same process works in a mk5 Jetta?
Dziękujemy.
Does this work on mk6 gti?

That little black box under the steering lock is also what you'll need. should start and run if you get that part as well
@Pedro Ariza Thankyou so much for your advice I will as you described.
bonjour c'est quoi le nom des materiaux sèil vous plait commet s'appele la vis et le truc pour l'enlever
Since it’s just the lock. Does it use the same key?
Buen vídeo, gracias por compartir los detalles , son de mucha utilidad.
Just completed this job. If anyone is interested I’ve posted a short video with advice on removing the sheer bolts
I am stuck at the sheer bolts as well. Thanks for the tip!
Remplacer le barillet ou le tube entier c'est déjà une plaie en soit
Excellent
hi,have you the link of parts?many thnks
POS breakaway screws PISSED 🤬
What if a pin did not come with ignition barrel!?
Please do a video of non working air con n heater fan
Thank you for this detailed video. You helped me save a ton of money!
Did i not tell you something
Is only the negative wire to battery that u need to disconnect or both?
Only negative
What if the key cant get in the final position? Is it still possible to take out?
yes, before you remove the whole mechanism, you have to tap the ignition housing with a hammer and screw driver till whatever is jamming the lock pops out
How long does it take the air freshener to work like in the previous video?
What a perfect video! Great job, congratulation!
