As a German I can relate. If I would translate the English names directly into German they would also sound silly lmao!
Also I like the similarities between Swedish and German.

The same with Dutch here, honestly. Superhero and -villain names directly translated probably just sound hilariously weird in any language. My guess is it's because you don't normally translate names, so it sounds strange to do so.

Bro I love German (studied it for 9 years in school) and translating words from one language to another is so fun (cool idea for a gameshow or stream even). In Croatia we have a music band called Krankšvester and I don't know why they thought calling themselves *NURSE* in German would sound cool lol
We also have words that are very literal and possibly easier to learn for foreigners or little kids, like kišobran and suncobran (literally "rain defence" and "sun defence") while in English you have to remember one is umbrella and the other is parasol, even if everyone will get what you mean if you say I need an umbrella for the beach.
I think most germanic and slavic languages are like that, very silly xD

I am Swedish and I don't think that Swedish is a very beautiful languages and prefer to listen to some other languages. I am still happy to hear that other people like Swedish and that Ike have opened the door for people to wake some interest for it. I think this is a pretty normal phenomenon that people tend to be a lot more harsher on their own things. Like looks, native language and so on so forth.
In my personal experience, non-swedes (and/or people outside of the Nordic countries) are a lot more positive of the Swedish language than Swedes. As a Swede myself it sadens me to see so many swedes being so uncomfortable and so self hateful. I think people need to understand that there is a lot of biases that comes to play for how a language sounds. Like, if your first impression or Swedish is from a heavy chain-smoker with a overly thick scanian accent than obviously Swedish isn't going to sound pretty at all, same with basically any language when its being spoken by a person with a ugly, non pleasant voice, tone, speech rate or what ever.
Now I won't sit here to say that Swedish is beautiful or what ever. I'd rather be in a more natural stance just to avoid any sort of bias lmao.

NO IT’S LITERALLY NOT. SWEDISH IS SO UGLY AND WE MAKE FUN OF THE SWEDES AND THEIR LANGUAGE ALL THE TIME HERE IN NORWAY. BAHAHA 😂😂🤣 He is right though, the names sounds *_ridiculous_* in Swedish! And that’s why in Norwegian dubs we don’t translate English names from English to Norwegian since we are more aware of how stupid things would sound that way. But Danes and Swedes *loves* translating things into their languages and it’s so hilarious to me. 😂 And yes, the gift/married-thing is true for not only Swedish, but also for Danish and Norwegian. We have share a lot of the same words, just remember that! And I knew he was gonna say that funny married-thing as soon as he said “BUT-“ and started typing away. 😂

Swedish can be silly at times for sure but don't blame the language, blame the past swedes needing to translate and/or change names of characters back then. Nowadays with US media more common, they mostly use their original names when referring to characters in Swedish media unless it's kid related is what I gathered from UA-cam ads.

Yeah, the need to translate things that aren't supposed to be translated is something that some countries know way too well. I have an example for Polish (a bit less outlandish than names but it still sounds so wacky) - translating wordplay titles (while doing not working wordplays and getting nonsense)
      1. Dirty Dancing - (I'm doing literal translations to English bc it sounds equally dumb) Spinning Sex
      2. Die Hard - The Glass Trap (yeah, only works for the first one)
      3. Alien - Alien: 6th Passenger of Nostromo (why would you put spoilers in the title)
      4. Goodfellas - Boys From the Gang (just why)
I may edit this list if I remember more of them bc this thing was a trend for around 30 years so there's way more of them

    @Zyrodil 11 місяців тому +1

Swedish person here, I absolutely agree, we have this thing where we - for no other reason than to amplify how ridiculous we sound - start blank-translating everything to Swedish.
Magic the Gathering cards especially, it's like a fucking brain parasite.
Back in the 60's and into the 90's we'd translate most things into Swedish so that our audiences could understand what they said in movies and shit, but at the tail end of the 90's we actually started rolling out English in schools to such an efficient degree because _let's fucking face it_ video games sounds cool and you wanted to know what your Starcraft Marines were actually talking about and everytime you turned a rock you learned an entire cluster of new information. Learning English as a Swedish kid is one of the cooler things in life, you start to understand what the screaming people in videogames are talking about and sooner or later, you understand an entire language through the lens of killing aliens, strange technology and military lingo.
In general, we're a lot better at speaking English now than we were 25 years ago and while we still have some dubs for movies/shows for children, we still mostly have English on most of our media.
I knew what "Zeal", "Overwhelming" and "Exterminator" meant before I learned the word "Welcome", I also understood the concept of a "Tesla-coil" before I learned how to ride a bike.
This creates a very confusing situation where my main language is a horrible mismatch of Swedish, English, Japanese, Chinese and sometimes German and Russian, while I wish I could brag about how interesting that seems, it actually sounds like I've been injected with heroin my entire life until it just stopped biting and I naturally recovered - but I still have pieces of brain damage left in there.
A normal Swedish sentence in the brain of me or my friends could be: "Sup, hur mår vi? I'm doing pretty good myself, råkade slå i tå-fan i bänken ute i köket, ate some really oishii fucking noodles though så man ska inte klaga."
["Sup, how do we do? I'm doing pretty good myself, I accidentally hit my fucking toe in the kitchen bench out in the kitchen, ate some really tasty fucking noodles though so I can't complain."]

I'm fairly sure Sweden also did this, but Norway used to publish and translate DC and Marvel comics and give the heroes norwegian names. Batman was known as "Lynvingen" which means "Lightning Wing" which... Admittedly sounds cool, but doesn't fit him at all... And Spider-Man was known as "Edderkoppen" which is just "The Spider". It makes sense to me why they translated it that way, but watching them call him that in the Animated series dub while they never bothered to change and translate the logo in the intro OR THE NAME OF THE SHOW ITSELF bothered me A LOT. Nowadays we just stick with the english names in the subtitles for the movies and I think that's for the best...

reminds me of that time, they directly translated Dr Strange to Dr Seltsam. Hearing words in your own language - which sounded exotic before - suddenly in your own language really takes away the fun. that's why i had a small crisis, when i learnt that some english speaking people can't speak multiple languages, and actually call their pets/monsters (in monster games) "Cloud" or "Leaf". I was like "...Ew". Me (a non native english speaker) have some level of exotic to it, but naming mine just "Wolke" or "Blatt" is often boring and just "ew", personally. like how Ike described it. it just sounds silly.

Loool it's the same in any language I think, we are used to the english names but tbh, the names are stupid in english aswell 😅
But yeah, many things sound bad if you translate them into your native language from english. I think partially bc of the "detatchment" to the english words. They are like given names and only if you translate them, you really notice that they just combine an animal + man and they are all pretty lame haha.
Also with other things. If I heard them first in english, it sounds bad in my language. Also, english has the connotation to be "cooler" than your native tongue usually.

Swedish has a lot of similarities to a lot of languages including English so I feel like the person that made Swedish was just on drugs. Like the word bra means good

    ah the 1980-1999ish
where they just needed to translate everything when a show was translated to swedish sometime just a dictionary translation and not a style or coolness.
that said Läderlappen for batman.... I mean its better then if had they just translated Bat man like they did everything else it would be (fladdermus mannen)..... Ahhh....
