    I’ve been quarantining my first Tanganyikans for 21 days... ready to move them in to their new tank this weekend. Quarantine tanks are cheap at the $1 per gallon sale!

    I just received three fish from a very reputable seller and as tempting as it was to put them in the larger show tanks, I still will have them in QT for a month. Good tips!

    For me it depends on the situation, a lot of my fish are in species only tanks so they just go straight into their 'home' tank as long as there's nothing in there that will be harmed by medication (like delicate plants). Additionally it depends on the source, I tend to be a lot less picky about QT when I buy privately from fellow fish club members and I've seen the tank the fish was bred and reared in. I'm also less picky with inverts.
    Anything that comes from a store though, goes through some observation period regardless of where it goes (the barren quarantine tank or it's forever home tank).
    Unfortunately up here in Canada API General Cure and EM Erythromicine are now illegal to import and as I can only refill my stocks VERY rarely, I no longer medicate unless they show signs of illness.

  • @rods1597

    I only use General Cure as I am most concerned about internal parasites. I quarantine for a minimum of 4-5 weeks with twice weekly water changes and just observe for other health issues and treat additionally if necessary.. Kinda halfway between Cory and Rachel's approach to quarantine.

    Hydrogen peroxide is a great disinfectant for after your quarantine session is done. Just add a cup to the 15 gallons and let that go over night then drain, rinse, and dry. Great video!

    In my opinion, quarantining is most often not performed by people simply because they are impatient and want to get their fish into their tank. For those of you who don't want another aquarium setup, such as myself, quarantining is simple. Get a 5 gallon bucket, a cheap heater, a cheap air pump, and you have a quarantine tank. When you do pick up a new fish, simply take water from your existing tank, plus about 50% new water and put it into the 5-gallon bucket. Add whatever medication you want, plus your heater and air pump, and there you have it, a temporary yet effective quarantine tank. You can easily change water every couple days. If you have ever infected a tank full of fish, you will never not quarantine again.

    • @SurprisedPikacheesecake
      @SurprisedPikacheesecake 5 років тому +2

      My issue with using a bucket is you lose a lot of viewing area to observe the fish. I think I'd rather go with a plastic tote of some sort, but yes, I agree with you whole-heartedly.

      I used to quarantine in a clear plastic tub, but now I’ve switched to a glass aquarium because it’s clearer and much easier to observe the fish. 👍

      @TheBudgetAquarist 5 років тому +1

      @@GirlTalksFish yep, but my point is that you don't have to have something extremely fancy in order to quarantine your fish, and can get by with something as cheap as a $3.50 plastic 5-gallon bucket.

    I have a 5.5 gallon (biggest thing I have is platys) with an AquaClear 30 (spare in the closet) on it. I pull a bag of Bio max (I normally keep 2) from my AquaClear 70 and that works out fine for me. I haven't broken it down yet, but will be as I don't have the space for more fish at the moment. I've always figured if my fish were good enough to go into the tank, the filter would be fine for the next set of fish in QT. I normally go 30 days, and don't medicate.

    Hey very nice video. ..I also quarantine for almost 3 months. I look first at the poop under microscope to see if there are enemies. ..In the first week. After that i only look at them. If there is one dying i took them out and look all Organs under microscope in 99.9 % you will find an enemy. Then i will medicate as you do ...After two month i put on some reef salt to provoke(5% salt in the tank ) ..if there is no reaction they can stay to my other fishes. .no problems with that for the last 25 years

    Unfortunately, I'm in a situation where I can't have anymore tanks, so if I were to get new fish they'd have to be additions to my current set ups which are betta and gold fish. I'm pretty content on having my betta be lone wolves however if I were to ever get more goldies there's no way I would introduce them to my current group without doing a 6 month quarantine period. May be overkill to some people, but it's not worth risking my babies, and there's so many things that can take awhile to show symptoms. That being said, I don't think my landlord would believe me if I told her the new tank was just temporary so I probably won't be getting a new fish for awhile!

When you disinfect he sponge filter how long before it will reseed with enough bacteria to use again?

    • @TazawaTanks

      Glenn Gordon Hi Glenn. If it has already been a couple of weeks, you maybe be able to skip the erythromycin and just use the General Cure. As far as new bacteria in the sponge filter, a few weeks in another tank and it is good to go.
