You are a treasure Christian! I enjoyed your giant steps video too and would be interested to see how you would approach other Coltrane changes like 26-2 and countdown.
Hey Christiaan, I just stumbled this moment in your vid. Thanx for that info you're sharing. Very good stuff. It is always a good thing to simplify things. Than they get complex on their own... Regards from Germany
I like this with the chord chart up. This is like the other video you did on the Rhythm Changes simplified which I thought was great. I have two requests. 1) Do focused video's on Django applications and embellishments like the E7( 9b13) since you have good backup reference. 2) Chord chart and breakdown for Paulus Schafer / Stochelo / Gypsy Jazz take on Carlos Jobim's Wave Thanks either way
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and musicality! Whoever makes fun of you , more than likely, you waste 'em ! I like in the head how he starts on the 6 of the dom.7 chord, sometimes , not in this, with the flatted sixth next to it!?He also uses the 9 and 11 often, starting with them ... what are your thoughts on these? You don't have to reply, it's great to hear from you! God bless rock on peace 🎸🎇🎊🎶🎈🎆⛰️🏔️✨🎉🏞️🐕
Thanks Brad. I never think about lines like that really. I just play what I think sounds nice or transcribe what I think sounds nice. Makes no difference to me which notes are in it exactly!
@@ChristiaanvanHemert thanks man I appreciate it, you're a whole lot ahead of me and you blow my mind I'll be listening! I'd like to hear you play over "Django" God loves you deeply shalom🎸🎷
That's helpful. idk if you know, there is another IV IVm Movement I like much more than the one you used it's (Ebm7 Gb13) Db9 -> Gb7, the cool thing is that you don't need too change the way you would solo over. Maybe you make a video about those key movements and their variations one day.
Thanks Paul! The thing is that I'm trying to convert the Db- to a chord that resolves easily to Ab, that's why I showed the Eb7b9 option. If I choose to play Gb7 I would resolve to F- (on Ab). I show all those options in the some of the videos linked in the description!
Christian's videos are great, but... Does anyone else not like the tune to 'Donna Lee'? 🤷♂️ The chords are cool, and this simplified progression is good too, but I've never liked the head, even as a bassist (with Pastorius' famous interpretation). Unlike Django's version of 'I'll See You In my Dreams', (that is also a sort of right-of-passage piece to learn note for note) Donna Lee suffers from that terrible affliction of the worst be-bop pieces; a string of (emotionally) monotonous 8th notes. No?
I thought this video explains how to make this song easier? Most of the chords your playing are not "basic" chords your seventh chords are actually 6 chords. Your choice of minors and major types are not common basic chords. Improvising over the changes without really explaining doesn't help either. Simplifying this difficult song (for beginners) is important!
dude it doesnt matter if its 6th chords or whatever chords, the chord type and the relations of each chord matters. you need to simplify and find out which chords are formed to a cadence (ii-V-I's) and which chords can be associated to a certain key center.
Thanks so much,it now makes it so much easier,Sam.
Such a great lesson 🔥✅💯🙏
great video Christiaan, thanks!
Thanks!

To much theory here
is it cool? - yes. is it music? - ... a question..
Can be both at the same time!
lol... what??
