I watched this video several times over the years and have saved it in my playlist. To me, this could be an important survival skill. Thank you… even these 3 years later!

I love the idea of an adventure right out your back door! It was a very fun and downright playful idea. It saved a lot on travel expenses also, but it was the backyard aspect that I enjoyed the most. 💫♥️💫

I was surprised that the tarp top worked as well as you report. I took a snow survival course years ago and built a snow cave in Yosemite at Badger pass. The snow was more than 20 feet deep tho. But you can keep a snow cave warm with a candle and just body heat will supposedly keep it at 32 deg. If nothing else is available sheltering under a snow covered juniper or other suitable tree works fairly well. It will keep you alive anyway.
And m,y advice: get some cross country or alpine skiis or at least some snow shoes.

I, too, am surprised that having a tarp top worked so well. I took a winter camping course (in Yellowstone) in the early 80s and we, too, built snow caves (Quinzhees actually) so I was expecting you'd do that when I started watching. Your "trench" method has the advantage that your shelter won't collapse on you as you're digging it and maybe trap you. I wonder how the tarp top will work if it's snowing and snow starts accumulating. Either way, love the winter camping episode.

Loved the views on the ridge and the closeup of the moon. The area you selected stayed in the sun longer than those close to you. You made camping in the snow look like fun. Thanks.

That’s the exact same snow shelter I learned to make in the Boy Scouts. I never got to actually use it, as I’m from Southern California, originally, and our snow camps always ended up having snow. Lol

Awesome solo mountain hike - kind of like a Vision quest! Crampons appeared to help but in retrospect snowshoes would have been good idea (I've done my share of post holing). Only problem with tarp is you can't stargaze in bed. I lived off of MREs for a couple of days after hurricane Michael last year - you get used to it.... or not ;-)

Just a note, if you don't have snow shoes, you could use your tarp to support you ontop of the snow. If you have a blanket, quilt, tarp, or something else that can be spread out across the snow, it will support you, somewhat, like snowshoes would.
