      He was killed in a drunk driving crash in 1929 riding with driver / jazz violinist Joe Venuti

      @@babybloc Probably not drunk driving, just impatient. Paul Whiteman's very popular big band was in Hollywood shooting a movie. During some down time, they booked a gig in Santa Barbara and the members drove up by automobile. The great jazz violinist Joe Venuti was driving the car Mario was riding in. Heading up the Coast Highway, Joe got bugged at being stuck behind a slow vehicle, pulled out to pass at a spot with poor visiblity and had a head-on with a southbound car. Mario, badly injured and in horrific pain, was taken to a hospital where he died. He was only 29. He was in the band primarily as a violinist, but as you heard, he could play the hell out of an accordion. A New Yorker, he's buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx beneath a sad and beautiful headstone, which you can see via the link below. King Oliver is a neighbor there, as are a number of other very famous jazz musicians.
