There are 3 vocalists, in no particular order of one over another. It varied from song to song who the featured vocalist was. When think of Three Dog Night, I don't get a picture in my mind, of any one of the three guys. I think of them in a group, not as individuals.
    They were fantastic.

Groovy! Hearing this song always takes me back to when I was a little kid. Three Dog Night featured three great vocalists fronting a great rock-funk-pop-soul band. They ruled pop radio in the early seventies with over twenty top forty hits including three number ones. When you're ready for more from them, check out some of these: "One", "Shambala", "Joy to the World", "Eli's Coming", "Easy to Be Hard", "Celebrate", "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)", "Try a Little Tenderness", "Never Been to Spain", and "Black & White" among others.

Their name was is term from Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night"

Three Dog Night was my favorite band as a young lad. They took nicely written songs by some of the greats, made them their own and turned them into major hits and in some cases, masterpieces. This was always one of my favorites. So much of their early work was very soulful. Anything from their first album “One” is worth a listen. The late, great Cory Wells singing “Try A Little Tenderness” is an incredible must listen! 😎🎶❤️

This was, by far, my favorite 3DN song, and was, alas, my favorite song of all, at the time of its release. It may have been Paul Williams' lyrics. He is, after all, like 3 feet tall, so he would have to be a great writer, for some reason. The cool percussives helped. Like "Time of the Season" and "Come Together" in that regard. The message was hip too. A total package.
I play it now on the guitar. Very easy, and similar to "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys".
Tonight, I would need between one and two dogs to keep warm. Not the full three. Not even freezing.

That was a nice sincere reaction. Out in the Country is one of their more subtle songs, very gentle, very mellow. The slow 4/4 rhythm, the offbeat stresses on the acoustic guitar, the organ accompaniment -- all make for a laid-back feel that doesn't overwhelm you all at once. It sneaks up on you with repeated listening. (It sure snuck up on me in September 1970, starting eighth grade.). For your next Three Dog Night son, may I recommend "Eli's Coming," by the great Laura Nyro, for a more dynamic performance?

To keep warm on a cold night you have a dog sleep next to you. The colder it is, the more dogs you need. A Three Dog Night is really cold. Also, there are three lead singers. I grew up out in the country and I used to ride to school with a kid who would play Three Dog Night 8-Track tapes in his old '63 Ford Galaxie convertible. I was more into vinyl, so I bought all of their albums. I've always loved this song.

I liked the Carpenters very much also but put Three Dog Night a few rungs above them on my ladder of favorite musical acts. Harri you need to check out more of their music. They are more rock than the easy listening music of the Carpenters. Both are great but I prefer TDN more. They were very popular in the late 60's and early 70's. They had 21 hits that reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts. They had 3 songs that hit #1. I think they were fantastic vocalists. Cory Wells passed away, sadly. All three sang on this song and many others. Chuck Negron had the most recognizable voice but Cory and Danny Hutton were both great singers. When I would go to my friends' homes they all had the same albums: Chicago Transit Authority, Rubber Soul, The Doors, Three Dog Night live at the Forum, Cream, Rolling Stones, Iron Butterfly,Led Zeppelin, There were more but these were staples of my hippie friends. Funny, TDN was a super popular group back in the day. They usually had a backing band behind them. Funny Harri, The Beatles only had 4 instruments. ZZ Top only had 3. Thanks for reacting to this song Harri. 👍🔥🕊️😎😉

Harri, my friend, the name of the group represents the 3 lead singers but also references an old Aboriginal phrase. In the outback, if you were alone and cold, you would dig a hole to sleep in, and you'd get 1 of your dogs to sleep with you to help keep warm. Naturally, if it was a bit colder, you'd use 2 dogs and of course, if you were really cold, it'd be a 3 Dog Night !!! Kind of like any of the old phrases that people forget the origins of, it sounds funny, but it was based in fact.

This song and "Light My Fire" were what made me think, "As soon as I get some money, I've got to buy an organ!"

Thanks for doing this Harri. I had actually forgotten what a great band Three Dog Night was. The story behind “We’ve Only Just Begun” is amusing. It started out as the background music for a bank commercial and Richard Carpenter heard it and called Paul Williams to find out if it was a complete song. It turned out to be one of the Carpenters’ largest hits. 🌺✌️

The phrase "three dog night" means it's really cold. It supposedly comes to us from the Arctic where Native Americans would sleep with dogs to keep warm. One dog, chilly... two dogs, cold... and THREE dogs - the coldest!! I don't know if it's true, but I"ve heard that all my life.
