Fixing the Rotorway. "It all came together"

- Rue bought a 2004 Rotorway 162 Exec Experimental helicopter without even knowing if it would fly at our altitude. After getting the parts we need to properly service the machine, it's time to discover the truth...Does this Helicopter even work properly and does it have the power to fly up in the mountains at between 5300 and 8500 ft density altitude?

My Father. Darold Crawford, used to build Rotor Way Execs for owners, I used to help once and awhile, Very Cool!! At last count I believe
he was around 25 kits.
Impressive.
Met your father a few times in California.
I recall he built 30 for a group in Russia back in the late 90's
Can you tell me how much hours of work and money needs to be put to build and asamble it. Excluding purchase price. Aprox number. I am in the phase of buying already half build one, which is sitting in garage. Thank you
Hi, enjoying the video, you mention that Elastomeric bearings are there to absorb vibration, there actual function is to allow the blades to change pitch. Normal bearings under the high centrifugal loads will gall and start to bind over time. When a cyclic input is made the blades are changing in pitch twice a revolution of the rotor. That's a lot of twisting under a lot of force, Elastomeric bearings were one solution to the problem.
Thanks for sharing. I have much to learn.
@@435alive Look forward to your next episode!
Helicopters are fascinating and incredible machines when you start to learn how they do what they do. People spend years trying to understand how it all works. I spent 5 years designing and building my own helicopter, then I taught myself to hover it. The project is still on going but I can hover for about 1m 30 seconds. A technical hitch stopped the project for a while but I'm back on it now. Enjoy learning about them, the more you do that the more you will what to know.
Cheers Ben
Farm boys leveling up!
It's amazing how well they run once you put fuel in them! Been there done that!! 😂
It's almost like thats the first thing on the check-list for a reason.
Hey you guys I met you at the texas gathering cool video
Hell ya boys!
I enjoyed your video be careful I had one I rolled it over
Thats why you need to Have proper training as a certified Heli pilot. Helicopters are no joke and people who think "oh how hard could it be?" have no idea what they're up against.
"Shall we try a shot of starting fluid" I cant believe he said that, they will be trying to tow start it next.
Have you ever used starting fluid? It works good!
Could you provide more info on the gentleman who helped you? Also about the Rotorway community you mentioned? I have a ~2000 vintage 162f that’s about 80% complete sitting covered up in my heated shop since new. Need some help. Thanks
Ive had 4 of those superchargers die on me. Be careful!
Did you ever have one go out during flight? If so, what happened?
@@435alive one was on first startup of the day. Couldn't maintain rpm and wasn't making boost (manifold pressure). The ecus will limit you to 34 inches. If you can't pull power don't take it to altitude
@@danielmisner4048 Good to know, Thanks.
Hello, guys.I met you at the texas gathering nice video
Hi Bob! Thanks. We learned a lot from you guys at that fly in. It's a great community.
@@435alive The guy that was helping you out.Is there any way that I could get his contact information?Or was it just a private guy that you know
Do you have the contact information for the guy that was helping you guys out?I think I might need some help
How cool!!! BE CAREFUL!!!! HAHAHA
We are indeed involving professionals so as to extend our existence.
@435alive well if anyone can figure out how to do it right while having a blast, it's the 435 Alive team baby! 😀
A rude question.... but I have to ask....... what how much did you pay for this? Thanks from New Zealand. How exciting !! Many thanks for sharing. Lovin it and be safe !
They go for around 60K but we didn't pay that much. 😉
that's methed up!
Turbocharger belt???
or is it supercharger? 😉
@@435alive yeah i was thinking about that aswell, but i have never heard of one with a supercharger before 😅
@@Eflemmen so it turns out they were putting superchargers on them in the early 2000's but they are a bad design so most of them get taken off.
@@435alive ahaa 😅 learning new things every day 😄
Man I really enjoyed this. Algorithm worked. Very fun stuff!
Thanks for watching!
You couldn't pay me to get in one those.
It's an incredible machine.
They're so fun!
I know, they are such a dodgy design. Surprised they sold any.
