      Dark Souls 2 doesn't have chest chains to distinguish mimics? In Dark Souls Remaster and 3 I have never received an unexpected mimic since I found out about the chain(If the chain is forward, then it is a mimic, if the chain is hidden under the texture, then it is a mimic that Miyazaki disguised

      ​@@BoneWalker Doesn't work. They have a big circular hitbox arounde their grab, so you'll get grabbed regardless of which position you stand near them.

      @@angrymedic3803 yes, because "lvl adp" is saying "hey its not ur fault ur bad, just level a stat" while saying "git gud" is implying a skill issue. They have completely different implications. The main issues that people have with adp is that the bad hit boxes still exist even while leveling it. It is a stat that doesn't warrant its own existence because it's functionality is obtuse and only works as a fix SOME of the time.

    See, this could have been avoided with only the slightest of effort, by just having it deal damage without activating the grab animation. No one would be complaining at the mere fact of you taking damage from standing behind a mimic while the limbs explode out from it, that would have made perfect sense.

      He was saying the devs should have made the fail safe a knock back attack from the limbs bursting out instead of a visually jarring 180° grab with its mouth.

    My agility is at 97/98, I have the “recommended” ADP leveling, but guess what? Those hit boxes are still a bitch, particularly The Imperfect’s dark orb ranged attack.

      Personally, I had more fun before I knew about adp than after I leveled it up, which was after killing fume knight. I guess thats because I loved that I had to use every single dodge at the perfect timing

      I would love for them to do something with the mimic bonfire concept. Throw in a few sites of grace that are actually mimics and will fight the player. Even better if they do it after a deathblight swamp area

    I just love DS2 apologists trying to justify this in the comments. Flat earther levels of cope right there, when you see something happening right before your eyes, but still deny its reality.
    "You're in the Company of champions/didn't level ADP/have your hands touching the mimic, so this thing where you get teleported into a mimic's mouth from behind its ass didn't happen. Also it's your own fault for not dodging, it's a good thing that it happens because it adds challenge, and it happened in other Souls Games (trust me bro)".

    The more I'm watching these videos, the more I start thinking of diabolical intentions of whoever tf designed the Scholar.
    Like fr, I have NEVER had such issues in the original game. Maybe I just raised my ADP to 30 too quickly, but seriously, any time I got hit, it was my fault. A Pursuer NEVER had to miss me to stab me with his curse thrust attack.
    But then I am watching videos and realizing that people are not lying about shitboxes either. Which begs a question: why is that even happening in the first place?

      lmao I feel you. Yeah I played the original without lving anything in adp and I bought sotfs recently and did the proper leveling in adp and you know what? I didn't really see much difference

      Essentially, the player is getting hit by an active hitbox on some frame, but there's no animation for glancing blows or weird positioning, so it just locks into the grab animation and looks jank af.

      i tried getting into ds2 on computer and the fact that you cant set your heavy attack to shift + m1 made me leave immediately.
      I don't want to fry all of my muscle memory from the 2 other games, and apparently ds2 isn't the greatest anyways (from what my friends told me )

      No, no, it doesn't. Showing that hitbox is, indeed, there, in no way addresses the criticism that it shouldn't be there. Nor does that video add any new information. Anyone can figure out that the player getting hit means there was a collision with a hitbox.

      Sort of, but half the challenge is remembering to check. If you remember to try attacking it, then being penalised the same as just going up and opening it makes actually no sense. Literally 0 justification for this as a design output

      This has nothing to do with the hitbox, but rather behavior/collision related, the hitbox is fine, the problem however is that the mimic detects the player at the front (because his hitbox is there) and acts the way it was programmed, one possible solution here would be to make the arms unable to trigger the mimic, or add invisible collision behind or around the chest so that the hitbox never reaches the trigger area @@Dry-Turkey

    You see stuff like this in DS3 and ER, too. It’s because a hitbox is actually a sphere in 3D games. I get hit while behind enemies in DS3/ER from time to time. 3D games don’t care about positioning, if you get hit by the sphere, it will trigger the damage, or in this case, reposition the actors for the grab animation.

      And this is not true. I don't know what you mean by "a hitbox is actually a sphere in 3D games". A hitbox is an invisible detector that exists in both the enemy and the player, if the enemy's hitbox connects with the player's hitbox, they will take damage, the same around. When an attack happens, a hitbox is put around the part of the attack's animation that is supposed to be what deals damage, in most cases, a weapon. So if by attacking a mimic from behind it and he jumps forward, you are NOT supposed to be hit by it's hitbox, if it was correctly placed around what MAKES SENSE for it to be.

      @@renanleandro5914 They're shaped like spheres in 3D games, it's not a box. There's plenty of videos on this very site that demonstrate this, so instead of writing all that you could have seen a vid or two. Look up "Dark Souls hitboxes visualized" and you'll find quite a few channels that demonstrate exactly what they look like. Hitbox is a term that just got carried over from 2D games, because the pixels were square shaped. In all the 3D visualizations of "hitboxes" they are all spherically or cylindrically shaped, with rounded ends. Domo3000 has been pumping out Dark Souls hitbox visualization vids every day the past couple weeks. They're all spheres or cylinders.

      @@renanleandro5914 you are wrong, the r2 attack of that weapon leans the arm forward, the arm has hurtbox and the hitbox of the mimic´s attack touched the tip of the arm prompting the animation, the hitbox in this case is completely correct, what would be a fix for this is to create a logic to ask whether the body is behind the mimic or infront. But i dont think a dev would actually think of this , this is something so unique to happen , you have to time the r2 perfectly in sync with the mimic. This situation happens maybe once every 10000 times. Not worth the devs time

      wym by is not true? he described exactly how 3d colliders work, only thing, that he is wrong is that he said that hitbox are spheres in 3d games, when they can be boxes, 3d cylindres(aka beans), but the hit box collision for the mimics grab is a 3d sphere, thats why you are grabbed when you are behind him, but it is like you said, if the hit box was placed correctly that would not happen, but it is a darksouls games, i guess it needs to hard/unfair/punishing. there is a channel, domo3000, he shows ds2/3/ER hit box, if the mod show correctly, most of enemies/bosses hitbox on the series, ds2 being the with less bs, aside from grabs, ex: hitbox activating before getting momentum, having hitbox where it should not have, hitbox being bigger than needed and others .

      It's a hitbix problem, would be a spacing problem if after knowing the mimic does the bite grab attack once you hit him he stayed on front of the mimic, directly where the bite is supposed to land, insteas he stayed behind the mimic, and still got hit

    While i love bashing on Dark Souls 2 hitboxes and this whole shit game done by the B-team, i'm more upset about the level design on this video.
    It's such an empty hallway with nothing in a castle filled with more nothing created by a japanese guy who have never ever seen Europe medieval in his life.
    To be fair, this game level's designs are the worst in the series, it's just a generic fantasy game instead of a medieval fantasy game.

      I really dislike that in ds2. When you enter an area you have this majestic view of the area and then it's just basically a empty area with some enemies here and there, drangleic castle even has empty rooms, anor Londo in ds1 had a hunting room, bedrooms, a storage room, it even had a church in a room. It's a shame, because areas like heide's tower of flame could have been so much better than just some ruins and a couple of halls inside the tower.

    Anyone who complains of anything in a souls game, doesn't deseve to play a souls game they have not increased vigor, endurance, adaptability in real life. Even if the player character dies while seeing the menu page, i wouldn't complain.. that is the way it is.. Welcome to Dark Souls.

    When your hit boxe touch the ennemi ‘s hitboxe, the 2 players are hit. It’s not a hitboxe issue, it s the same in all Souls games.

      In ds3 the mimic grab attack doens't land if you're behind the mimic even tho you're touching his hitbox, stop lying to excuse janky hitboxes

    Everyone knows you don't stand behind a mimic in ds2... hit boxes are easy to deal with.. I still think ds2 is an amazing game and will die on this hill

    It's janky sure, but I still enjoyed ds2 for It's own original take on dark souls. And the magic in ds2 is superior to any of the other games.

      The only decent thing DS2 magic has going for it is catalysts that cast multiple kinds.

      @@Mare_Man Nah magic builds were way cooler in 2 than you're giving them credit for. You had weapon and shield catalysts, proper hybrid builds that actually worked, attunement was a useful stat, there were good pure int and faith weapons, and it was viable in PvP. Definitely not a perfect game, but being a mage was a thousand times more fun compared to 3 where magic feels like a total afterthought and hits like a wet fart.

    noone seems to realise that ds2 was made by fromsofts B-team. it was basically a side project. stop shitting on it because miyazaki wasn't involved. while we're at it, ds3 is not by any standards easy. just to stir up some more fromsoft-sexuals.

    DS2 hitboxes are actually great, theres a video breakdown that proves it. What happened here was your hands clipped into its hit box, triggering the animation that plays when it surprise attacks and eats you. Its annoying, but doesnt mean the games hit boxes are bad.

      The hitbox itself is working fine. Is more a design flaw, that should not be a radial hitbox that extends behind the mimic.

They don't mean that the hitbox itself sometimes detects you and sometimes doesn't, they mean that it does not accurately reflect the animation. We can't see the hitbox. The animation serves as a proxy for it. If the hitbox does not match the animation, it is a bad hitbox.
