The quick mask feature was new to me. Very helpful.

When I use the Refine tool it creates a transparent red line and then makes the selection worse when I hit Reply.
When I watch you use Refine it looks invisible and then when you hit Reply it improves the selection.
What am I doing wrong? Is there some preference that I need to fix? I am using the same settings in the Refine Selection box.

Not sure what you're doing here. Don't give up, though and keep trying. It'll be something simple once you find out what it is.

I use the Selection Brush often, but sometimes it simply doesn't work. Even though I'm on the correct layer, and the Add button is on, it will not operate. I've been trying to figure out why this is happening, but so far my research is fruitless.

Not sure what's happening here. Have you got View/Show Pixel Selection checked? Do other selection tools work? Have you tried closing/reopening the image, or even shutting down Affinity Photo and restarting? (just in case it's a bug)

@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 Shortly after I posted this comment, I closed Affinity Photo and restarted my Mac. When I powered back up and opened AP, the Selection Brush worked again.

Could be bug with either Affinity or Mac. eg. Affinity asking for resources that Mac is refusing. If it happens again, try just restarting Affinity -- if this works it looks more like an Affinity bug. When things like this happen to me, I always report them on the forum: forum.affinity.serif.com/.

When I make a selection on my image, if i apply an adjustment, the adjustment is applied only to the selected area/s (which is what i want). Great. But if I apply an effect (eg. a gaussian blur) AP completely ignores the fact that I have an area selected, and instead applies the effect to the ENTIRE image!! :( :( What am I doing wrong? (I don't want to bother with masking and making different layers etc for this, I want it to work just like it does with the adjustments and apply anything I am doing (adjustments, filters, effects etc) ONLY to the selected area/s.
In this example I just want to make selections of different faces in a photo, and try different filters/effects like pixeling or blurring to mask the identities of the people that happen to be in a photo. Quickly and simply. Any ideas?
EDIT: I found that i CAN apply the effects only on the selected area/s, but only if i use the "Live Filters" (next to the "fx" button); but it won't work if i use the "fx" button, or the effects on the "Effects" tab (next to the "Layers" tab). Why is that? I

Hmm. That looks like it. fx is whole-photo only. You have to use live filters (Layer/New Live Filter Layer) or destructive filters (Filters/...).

@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 do you think that's a mistake in the AP software? It doesn't really make sense that one tab (adjustments) will work on the selected area, but the tab "next door" (fx) won't, and will only apply to the entire image..
And also, do you know if the fx tools on the live filters are more limited in what they can do/offer than the fx options found in the live filters tab?
