I loved how Mary, who was always so ruthless to Edith, was so human to Anna, especially when Bates was jailed and especially when she saved her from a miscarriage. The show is a masterpiece!
Mary could be a real bi***, not just towards Edith but also towards others she considered beneath her, sometimes even just for fun like her toying with men. Edith wasn't an angel neither. So these two gave each other what they deserved. Still, I totally agree on the statement that Marys relationship with Anna gave her character a lot more depth and made her more likeable.
@@jayburris6252 mary was way more ruthless towards edith than edith was towards her. Edith was sympathetic when Matthew died, but Mary decided to celebrate the day after Edith's boyfriend died.
@@raina2319 The celebration was already planned! Edith's "boyfriend" was barely known to the family. Matthew was the heir, who Edith had tried to get with. Th heir to the wealth dying effected the whole family. Edith gave as good as she got. People hate Mary because she is the more attractive of the 2 sisters.
At times, Anna seemed the person whom Mary trusted - & even loved - most consistently. (How could you not love Anna though! 🥰) And Anna understood Mary so well. She was the best type of friend - honest, fair & loyal. Perhaps they would've even been friends if their class divide had not existed. Mary helping Anna with her pregnancy troubles is the nicest Mary she ever was 😊
i think it's pretty clear they ARE friends. Despite the class divide. Mary trusts and respects Anna and confides in her when she can't do that with anyone else, and Anna sees Mary's hidden softer side that she only shows to people she cares deeply about. Mary isn't flawless, but she's not as bad as everyone who watches this show says she is.
One moment you forgot to include, was when Lady Mary visits Anna in prison during season 5. Anna had just been arrested for the murder of Mr. Greene.(The A$$hole who raped her in season 4.) Anyway, the prison only allows one visitor per day, so Lady Mary went in place of Bates. That whole scene is played masterfully by both Michelle and Joanne. Their conversation is so endearing. It shows the depth of their relationship beyond the walls of Downton Abbey.
In those days, it could have been an undiscovered heart condition. It was also before the discovery of penicillin and its benefits. While it wasn’t the Dark Ages of medicine, some conditions weren’t yet known, and therefore, not treated.
I love this show! Every moment. But forgive this ignorant American's question. Why do they always say go UP to London? As schoolkids a million years ago, we learned London was in the south of England. I even double checked on a map. Shouldn't it be DOWN to London from York? And throughout the whole fabulous show, everybody is going UP to London. What am I missing?
Excellent point. I've noticed the same here in Australia. I think, may be wrong, that 'going up' is going to the larger city. 'Going down' to the country, less about geography and more about centres of culture/power/variety.
@@angelareimann6433 Thank you very much. That makes sense. I just need to think outside the box! Here in the states, we strictly adhere to the compass. Something else that has been around for a million years is in California we say "Back East" referring to the East Coast. On the East Coast, we say "Out West."

I fully agree, it has given Mary a more facetted more real character ❤
Edith only got what she had given Mary. Mary was smarter so she got Edith better, but Edith was no Angel.

Mary's little "Ah, your waters have broken" was so funny 🤣🤣🤣 She was trying so hard not to freak out for Anna's sake.
In season 1, Bates was comforting Robert for the loss of his son. In the last season, Robert congratulating Bates on the birth of his son
Robert had no sons. You are incorrect. The heir to the estate was a cousin.

Mary loved very much Sybil and she loves her family. She was harsh with people who needed to be put in their place. Which was quite fair.

@tiagocosmos I loved when Mary told Anna she was her best friend! Patricia Gambino Harrington (I post on my husband Frank's UA-cam acct)
Love their friendship. Love how Mary doesn’t see Anna as a maid but as a friend

It just leaves the option for a part 2.
What's with the silly dollar signs. It's not American thank god
My husband and I have watched all the episodes probably 10 times. We always see something we missed before.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I’m probably on my tenth time. My family says I have a problem. But I kill it in DA trivia!
I miss that show. The twists and turns kept me coming back for more!
I read they’re making another movie.
One of THE best shows ever! Masterpiece.
I love watching this show Downton Abbey....
Oh how I love this friendship 🥹❤️
I love this show. ❤
"he weighs a ton" ofcourse you know it Mary 💀😂
Well I'm pretty sure he died on top of her. She must have struggled to get him off for several minutes
Friendship goals.
Loved the show
I really love them❤️
The dresses fashion superb
.
Overall, the family was very kind to their servants. In real life, I doubt this would have happened except in isolated cases.
Anna was loyal to Mary and Mary to Anna
well this is lovely but incomplete :)
I loved Anna, and she and Mary were so good together. I just never really understood Anna and Bates... they just don't "go" together!
Yes, they were so awkward to me too!
Really they made the series. They were both so excellent.❤❤❤❤
It was Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes which I never really understood. I didn't see any chemistry there.
Ten out of ten for observance from Liz McGovern!
Jessica Brown Findlay is so beautiful.
👏🏻💯
I still love your show. I'm sorry but no couples compare to Matthew and Lady Mary.
I ship them.
Sounds like my wife when it comes to routine cleaning
That was really a shock he s dead and the question is How ?

@@edfuller6581thank god we're not all American
Mary’s and Anna’s relationship is so unrealistic.
Why?
