For traditional Witchcraft initiates, there is no distinction between these two types of Magic. In fact, historically, if one looks at graecoegyptian magic, the PGM, or any of the multiple Grimoires available, ceremonial and folk magic are
    Combined and used interchangeably.
Their division occurred in the late 19th century, mainly by the golden dawn, who really had no idea about magic, because they simply did not have the resources available to us today (and they had a poor understanding of psychology, using it inappropriately).

To my knowledge the sign of the Cross precedes the wearing of Mjolnir, Thor's Hammer, as a pendant. What a lot of people don't realize is that historical heathens didn't all convert to Christianity overnight. Norse heathen vikings settled in the northern British Isles where many of the rural villages still believed in Saxon or Gaelic deities. By the height of the Viking Age (~800-850) there were heathens and Christians living as neighbors more or less peacefully! Of course cultures are syncretic, and they intermarried and exchanged beliefs, and some retired vikingr living in York might ask for Thor's protection and Jesus Christ's blessing alike. Polytheists aren't so exclusive or selective with who they worship, Jesus was just another god to them!
So when the Danes saw Christians wearing crosses as symbols of their faith, they adopted the wearing of Mjolnir -- as the strongest weapon of the strongest aesir -- to identify themselves as followers of the heathen faith. There were other symbols/effigies worn, like small carved depictions of Freyr, Odin, or Freyja in wood or stone. These are the only historical attestations, we have no evidence of wearing or tattooing of runes or other symbols like the valknut or Yggdraasill.
I can only speak to Norse heathens, I don't know if Anglo-Saxon or Gaelic heathens are known to have had symbols, I believe they were much more scarce by that time.

Funny you should mention that as I typically warn my children to be beware the rising cult of heaven and hell. Breed forth among the people of Rome. For it imposes a ruthless materialism, soul and mind are evolved with the body. Grow with it's growth, ail with it's ailments, and then die at it's death. There for dogma, definite and defined was cast like a shell over medieval Europe. Alas it was early in these days and along the same roads traveled by the knight templar and among the Anglo-Saxons and the barbarians who had concurred Europe during this time as well as England. So it was in this day upon defeat the barbarians or Norse men. Would become too shameful or frightened to return home after being defeated. So they were told that if they did not kneel and worship jesus they would end up in helhiem. Of course helhiem was known by the Norse men as the dark shameful underworld. Where the weak, meek and cowardly would go when they die and not too Valhalla. Most important to note as well is the fact that, helhiem is not the one of the nine realms known by the Norse men to be associated with fire and brimstone. This realm was known to them by Mulspilhiem, however this was not a realm to be feared by the Norse men. As it was simply one of more natural conventions and held no sway over them at all. But helhiem however was the most dreadful place they could imagine. To be locked in purgatory with the weak and cowardly Warriors. Was a terrible fate of the concurred and defeated Norse men. So it was that the name hell, taken from the name helhiem was thus adopted by the early Christian church or rather the only known church at the time in catholic Rome in Italy. Which had by the time of it's rising been sorely defeated themselves by the barbarians and the Caesar of Rome. Was all but a fading memory of Rome and of the Roman republic. Which had quickly and almost imperceptibly, transitioned the power of the Roman empire over to the church. With the funding provided by the templar knights who granted safe passage to Israel and the holy land and of course each trip brought with it donations from rich and poor alike. All of this went on for a little over 1,400 years before the bible was finally translated from Latin to English by the publishing house of sir fransis Bacon. Yet the stain of their evil and iniquity which was founded out of desperation to gain knowledge and power over the barbarian horde of the Norse men. Who would of otherwise been too shameful and scorned, yet too worried. If they divulge any information about themselves that they be cast out from having any chance of entering Valhalla and become sucked down too helhiem. Lest they worship and give themselves to jesus. That if they trusted jesus then they would be safe from entering helhiem and be lead into Valhalla by jesus. This was not unlike the very stark contrast between heaven and hell still used today as dogma. Tought to scare those who do not worship jesus and tempting others that did worship jesus. Giving them a promise of heaven, a eternal vacation spot. Where you will be waited on by every angel and live forever in paradise. However jesus said in his final words left in the book of revelation chapter 19 verses 10. And they fell to their knees to worship the son of God and jesus said " Do it NOT!" "For I am thy fellow servant, worship God for the testimony of jesus is the spirit of gods prophecy over the earth." So it is that the like is also true of heaven and hell. As jesus was born and died a jew and even said that he would he would always be a jew and the Jews would be his people until they died and trusting god they would rise into the heavens... THE heavens to serve God for eternity, as the bible is B.asic I.nstruction B.efore L.eaving E.arth and the rest will fall into place. As you read the Jewish book of revelation the book of Jeremiah chapter 17-19 as God warns 300 years before jesus was born of those who worship baal ( which is the dark God of Babylon and known to the wicked still to this day in the goetia written by cowley himself. That baal is the king and first prince of hell) God says again as aforementioned In Jeremiah chapter 17-19 Those who worship baal do so out of the imagination of their own evil hearts. God goes on to say that wickedness never came into gods mind to create or do any such wickedness and those who believe in wickedness, the devil, and hell all do so in the imagination of their own evil hearts. God says futher that in this day of gods final judgment that the wicked who burn incent to baal and others gods would in this day meet in their groves. (Like bohemian grove for instance) God goes on to say these men would every one trust deeply in their devices ( like the cellphone that the NSA is using to track you right now) saying furthermore that those who burn incent and make sacrifices to baal and to other gods would every man and woman be caused to eat the flesh of their own sons and daughters, their own brothers and sisters. ( just as the wicked do now and have been doing to everyone they seek out the free minded people and seek to control them by offering them money and fame in exchange for their eternal soul as they eat the flesh of gods children and worship baal out of the imagination of their own evil hearts) but let me tell you something that there is no such thing as zombies or demons. that all of this was and has been foreseen by God who is time and space and we ☝️ are all one with God and the future is red hot chili peppers "Dark Necessities " in a "parallel universe" you may live on high or even under a rock. But there is NOWHERE you can go that the judgement of God will not find you. You can make a deal with the imagination of your own evil hearts but your butt and your soul belong to God. Until you Unite with God for the sake of love and become completely selfless as you take up the great work of God's love and will. Then like another daughter killedby the wicked said alanis morissette "Uninvited" a very unfortunate slight misconception you all have about us zombies and of God for we are all one with God and the future is red hot chili peppers "dark Necessities" created by God for the sake of love and the rest will fall into place. Repent Jeremiah chapter 17-19

I strongly believe people should do as they please with their practice. There's a lot of snobby armchair magicians that think you have to put yourself in box to get successful results, which is totally false. As long as you have the correct intentions you will get the same results as someone who has expensive materials. I think people are forgetting the purpose of all this. So it's cool to see you're promoting the mixing of practices. I'm personally a chaos magician bc of the freedom. It is important to properly understand how each practice functions separately but no one should put themselves in a box. Do as thou wilt

As someone else said, this difference is a bit trivial (being i.e. the PGM, fundamental in Ceremonial magick but originating in Greco-Egyptian folklore). Personally I prefer more of a ceremonial approach, bc way too many traditional practises look like "TikTok magick" and I can't take them seriously.

I like that you both think it’s ok to mix the ceremonial and folk traditions. Cause I completely agree, but I’m always hearing they are completely separate things and that mixing them or mixing any other traditions, is wrong. Eclectic witches get a really bad rap n I don’t get why. So I appreciate this video.

i dont wanna discount anything you guys said i wanna add to the conversation.
I come from the pagan folk side but i moved into the ceremonial side because of mysticism and hermeticism. (I guess you could call me a pagan esotericist) I do think there is a stigma in the magical community between high and low magick that does cause some issues. I dont think they really understand each other very well and to some degree actually disagree on some things.
A high magick mystic whos well into their initiatory work probably isnt going to think its useful to go and get material things using witchcraft and may even reject the idea because theyre actually off in the heavenly realm trying to perfect their psyche, their spirit.
The folk witch while they are aware of the mystical wisdom element and the power of rituals and the personal gnosis just dont have the same goals as the other person does. They are interacting with the world and the spirits and the powers for their benefit and the benefit of others, to learn and to grow. different goals, methods, restrictions, different things they are working on.
It may appear like a dichotomy at first glance but i think its just a difference in the work theyre doing really. That may be their true will and life path they need to be doing at that time. Judging someone elses path as if it was your own and then having a disagreement with it is just not helpful for either party. I dont think we celebrate the diverse paths that are available to us and more specifically the beauty of witnessing other people having their journeys as much as maybe would be helpful for us magick folk.
Like we're getting caught in the details.. That's just what I think of that situation and of course none of that is trying to paint a specific picture of what these people are actually doing and think but its the example i came up with.

As far as how expensive it goes for Cermonial Magic it really depends on what you are doing.
If you are working with angels all you need is a compass, colored pencils, incense, and a candle. You can use a kitchen knife as your ritual dagger wind, stones for earth, chalice for water, candle for fire.
Contacting angels you need to know

Not just with Iceland, but early Christians followed both the "Old Gods" and Jesus. There are magical amulets with various deific names: Jesus, Hermes, a local god, or 2.
Also, the Sign of the Cross has nothing to do with Thor or Thor's hammer. The Sign of Cross has a long and complicated history with sources dating back to the early Viking period.

Does it make any sense to use the magic systems from sources based on one's place, language or ethnic group?
Is there greater power in having the magic speak to its user (and therefore produce greater results) by learning and performing the magical spiritual practices of ancient peoples who walked the land where you live, spoke and speak the language you speak, or of whom you are a genetic descendent?
Is there a reason why an individual's soul chose to incarnate at a particular place and time and circumstance(s) which give clear indications as to the most prolific magical path to follow? 🤔
Anyway I figure there has to be a better means of choosing than like I'm ordering from the kid's menu at Applebee's. "Hey look kid, if you don't like it, send it back and we'll get ya the never ending pasta bowl. Oh wait a minute, that's Olive Garden." 😂

    • @RiverWoods111
      @RiverWoods111 3 роки тому +1

It's more the menu at Applebees. They cover a lot of these types of questions on the "Occultism with a dash of Salt" channel. We don't incarnate with a specific path in magick and most people are drawn to certain types because of their interests. One path isn't stronger than another path. I live right now in the deep South, but I have lived everywhere and I have no tie or place I call home, except the place I lay my head at night. Sometimes, I will put my hometown as Tahoe Calif. not because I was born there, but because I lived there for almost 4 years and that is a long time for me. I haven't been back there in 35 years though. It's not home.
Really when looking at what area you want to practice in what are your interests? I don't do folk magick because I am not into combing through nature looking for plants and I have horrific allergies to plants that doing so could be bad for me. I hung around the witchcraft community for years and didn't jump in because almost everyone I met was into all the plants and crystals and nature stuff. 4 years ago I met my first formal teacher in magic that taught me ceremonial magick and how to do magick without all the folk influences. My practice is heavy into sigil work as I am a visual artist and it is just easier for me to do sigil magick. I do other types, but mostly that is my favorite type of magick. That said, I do work with the Fae as I used to live in a Redwood forest where I got visits from them all the time. There are other areas where I will dip my toes into Folk magick, but I will never delve into it very deeply.
I would shy away from the ideas of being "chosen" or "having chosen before incarnating" as it can lead to elitism. It is also scary to me, as an albino because people in some parts of the world use this idea to say that albinos were born magickal and therefore that is an excuse to murder them for their body parts. Now if it is the case that you were born into a family that has a certain traditional type of magick, for instance, Hoodoo or Voodoo. That is a cultural tie, and not as much that you were picked for it but it is your culture. Those are closed systems and I doubt that you were born into one of those because if you were you wouldn't be asking the question you are asking.

    • @talonshadows4587
      @talonshadows4587 3 роки тому +1

That depends on how connected you are to a specific area of interest and/or culture.
My own situation I grew up knowing I am a German/Chickasaw halfbreed but was never exposed to my ancestral Native Culture thanks to a racist grandfather
As an adult I was allowed into a Coven. Went thru all the Initiations for that Coven Fast forward a few years and as an adult I moved to Oklahoma to try to forge a connection with my Culture. After 20yrs I have completed fitting traditional dishes to the 8 Sabbats. I learned to speak Chickasaw and all spoken parts of ritual are in Tribal tongue.
Digging thru lots of legends I have discovered a Lunar Goddess as well as a deer antlered God among my ancient ancestors
Am I doing things the way my ancestors used to ?
Highly doubtful since I practice Wicca with a Chickasaw flavor.
Am I making ancient Gods happy by honoring them and letting them know they are not completely forgotten about....I'd like to think so.

I love this conversation! The mutual respect and lack of competition is refreshing to see with these two sides represented. In me they exist in my overall synthesis of my Craft. In my view it's just another Roman turd left stinking up interpersonal relationships to get all fiendish and territorial about intellectual stuff like art snobs that chop the Craft off of the respectable venues and call it 'Fine' and then it's nothing but snob parties talking their heads off about mere concepts that have no contact with anything outside their little word boxes. It's music from people who know nothing but parties so their songs are all about dancing the night away and tragic love and tainted love and giddy stupidity the depth of their words and musical senses. Craft means power in the old Northern places of the West.
Capricorn is my 4th house and has my Sun and Mercury with a crowd of asteroids and the Lilith apogee all in his entourage. Mars in Taurus in the 8th, courageous explorer of things my Catholic predecessors never dared approach much less dig up and study and get to know is the rest of the Earth in my chart, yes Astrology is my best trained part of the western Hermetic tripod of that, Qabala and Tarot, also in my mix. Ceremonial oh yes, but to me these days the folk of that is can you do it all in your inner eye and then begin to actually sense your energy field and learn to shape things like the star tetrahedron and it's not just a vision but a thing that tunes my vivid sense of the forms in ceremonial magick shining around me without my body getting up and doing anything but sit and breathe and do things with my energy field with my Shen that my muscles only interfere with when they tense up.
All together now! To my mind the ceremonials are rude when they fail to honor the local spirits in the setting up their loud and mighty temples with all the foreign gods barking orders, and then all the elves and fairies and nature spirits go into hiding like wild animals and song happy birds when numb people go bumbling into the woods not feeling their energy bodies and only really still fussing about their lives in the metropolis. With my Sun and Mars and Mercury power holding my Earth it brings my Wind and Fire into relation with life on the ground while the Tai Chi lessons got my energy field sense really bright so when the magick came back...one thing I'm getting clear is to be able to clearly sense in my inner eye and spatial field sense to draw all 4 pentagrams in correct directions for this or that at once. Folk and ceremony together makes the Aquarian so called genius but really just full power human for being aligned in head, heart and gut with the piety of really having the mind all the way to the feet and when the head and the feet are simultaneous the gates open big to that energy field previously mentioned.

🤔 hmmm.. As I figure. The folk magic is done among the common population and thus is considered lower as it's used for the individual up to the family and/or tribe. Where as ceremonial magic was performed by Priest's and/or official's of the state. Thus the work was rarely performed for the individual! It's done for a tribe, city or a country, or for an entire nation! Over time, the greater work was lost. Thus we have the modern confused situation where high magic is worked on the individual level, same as folk magic!

Hello, could you please make a video about what you said @23:25 'Logic for why magic works'. Cause it never worked for me. I like the theory around it, but every time I tried something practical it never worked. And I had a girlfriend who is really into it still and although she never had any tangible results she swore it worked and I didn't mind cause I liked the ceremonial part of it but now she kinda slipped into that horrible manifestation toxic positivity movement and I couldn't even talk to her anymore so we split. But yeah that aside, I would really love a video on the logic why magic works, cause as I said I liked and still like the theory but I never ever saw any tangible results. (I dont mind being an armchair person, it's still interesting, and maybe not all humans have the ability to make it work)

I found this very interesting! I came here from your interview! I would slightly disagree in that all folk magic is associated with christianity in america. A lot of American traditional folk magic works with the Witch Father (seen a lot with trad witches), Bucca, The Folkloric Devil which aren't necessarily christian associated, but nonetheless as someone who grew up with Appalachian folk and southern cunning roots Christian imagery is certainly prevalent. I'm just not sure I'd go as far to say that its always part of it.

also quick question! what are your opinion of Jinn? how would you define them? i’m interested because my bf at the time is a refugee from afghanistan and bruh the shit hes told me 😂 this man convinced me dragons existed
(in his state there was a mountain where a dragon was once slain, and the water is bloody and pussy; another story of a dragon that rampaged an area and that specific area has supernatural anomalies and nothing can grow there and looks perpetually burned).
personally Goetic demons are Jinn imo rather than fallen angels.. out of curiosity, what’s your belief?

Jinn are neither goetic demons nor fallen angels. According to both pre-islamic and islamic beliefs, they're more or less people with societies and cultures that exist on a different dimension parallel to us. They're more comparable to faeries of celtic folklore because they can be mischievous and tricky spirits to work with, unlike goetia, because they have free will.

    What is a "scarlet woman"?

    • @RiverWoods111
      @RiverWoods111 3 роки тому +3

It has to do with sexism in ceremonial magick. Because ceremonial magick is hugely men, the men tend to look down upon the woman. They also look like the woman to be the path to or through the Da'at, and will typically use women in the practice sexually for this purpose. Because of this, they will then label any woman in ceremonial magick as a "scarlet woman". She explains this in a video that I believe is on the podcast "Occultism with a Side of Salt" UA-cam Channel. The video is about sexism in the Occult.

By definition given here for "folk magic" it definitely doesn't cover my practice within Mayombe. What I relate is local plants bc where I live my sacred herbs grow in my area. In my tradition if you cannot go into the bush and find like 7-9 of the sacred herbs and identify them than you just have a title and aren't really worth your salt. Mayombe ritual tend to go from like midnight to like two maybe even to like four in the morning. Our "sigils" are called patipemba and need initiation to use. This tradition cannot have stuff added to it from outside it. I actually got into mayombe after having a major fallout with the oto. I think it's weird the oto's egc does baptism to children. Alot of hoodoo is Congo like my tradition Mayombe being from yombe Congo Africa. I have ancestors from Appalachia and plan on looking more into there rootwork to work with my ancestors. Mugwort and wormwood grows in Florida by me.

I see why men are more attracted to Cermonial or at least your channel and why women are attracted to Nike's.
Cermonial is very ritualistic and right brained.
And Witchcraft is very intuitive and left brained.
There is a lot more trancework in witch craft, especially traditonal witchcraft. Cermonialists tend evoke beings that they do not trust into this triangle of manifestation.
There is only one book I know of that deals with astral projection and cermonial magic and it involves calling using Archangel Gabriel's talismam, The trident of paraclesus, the holop magic square of travel.
Im sure there are more techniques but this is what I know studying Ars Paulina.

Seidr was practiced by volva, the medieval Scandinavian's cunning women and priestesses. Although it is an old pagan magical practice, I would argue it has more properties of ceremonial magic than it does folk magic. The volva would set up a ritual space, wear special clothing, sit atop the high seat (an elevated chair on a table or a platform outdoors, or even a throne if such an important seat was there). There are accounts that the priestess would then sing a specific chant-like song using a special poetic metre called galdralag while waving a pronged staff in certain patterns, presenting effigies, and rocking back and forth. This was used to enter ritual mind and invoke particular deities.
To me, that feels like an early magickal ceremony.

The sign of the cross thing is interesting! I do think the idea of it coming from Thor's hammer might be a myth, though. Eastern Christians have it as well (though they do it in the opposite direction) and they weren't the ones who made Christian contact with the Norse. From what I can tell with light Googling, it's been around as a Christian gesture since the 2nd century.
