    A luxurious Mk3 Ford Escort 1.3 Ghia with just 57,337 miles and full history.
    EQUIPMENT
    Laminated windscreen, safety glass all round, louvred design radiator grille, anti-burst locks, body-side protection mouldings, protective bumper inserts, overriders, wide bright mouldings on windows, bright mouldings rear lamps and tailgate, belt line moulding in bright finish, tilting/sliding sunroof, triple body side tape stripe, remote control door mirrors, additional sound insulation, Ghia Badging, Ford RST 21P push button radio, two speed plus variable intermittent wipe, heated rear window, tachometer, trip recorder, solid state multi-function digital clock, four spoke soft feel steering wheel, loadspace carpet, cigar lighter, illuminated interior controls.
    EXTERIOR
    This superb top of the range for comfort Mk3 Escort Ghia is finished in Ford Arctic Blue (code 7 1). The stunning paintwork has a bright uniform finish which is a testament to the previous keeper’s devotion for the car. This incredibly well cared for genuine example is structurally excellent. Tiny bodywork imperfections and blemishes are very minimal and certainly take nothing away from the impressive appeal of this beautiful car. The Ghia specification brightwork is remarkably well preserved and virtually undamaged. Even the original pressed metal number plates remain with the car alongside a metal AA grill emblem, a real suggestion of enthusiast ownership! The sunroof is operational but stiff. A once common sight on our roads, this lovely Ford Escort in desirable Ghia form is sure to stir up nostalgia.
    INTERIOR
    Finished in factory original ‘Ghia’ spec Durham and Crushed Velour trim in Blue colour scheme (code GK), the seats and condition of the fabrics are fully commensurate with such a low mileage and cherished example. The matching door cards with wood inserts are spotless and the colour keyed cut pile carpets have defied the years remarkably. All switchgear is functional, and the soft finish dashboard is completely free from the all too common cracking issues, almost unheard of! The parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the correct cord hangers. Even the factory Ford RST 21P push button radio cassette remains fitted and functional! This wonderfully presented interior is exactly as Ford intended, a real delight for the enthusiast.
    ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
    The time proven transverse mounted 1300 OHC engine with single variable-venturi carburettor develops 69bhp, ample to keep in flow with modern traffic. The engine is wonderfully quiet and smooth, owing in no doubt to a lifetime of documented fastidious care and maintenance by the previous keepers including the last owner, a Mechanic by trade. The standard specification automatic choke and electronic ignition are both present and correct, and operate perfectly. The four speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift is light and exact, a joy to use.
    WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
    Five pristine 5” x 13” styled road wheels with spotless bright finish wheel centres and rim embellishers are shod in matching 155/80 R13 tyres with masses of tread remaining. The black painted edges to the wheel holes remain correct as per factory build, often lost upon wheel refurbishment. The diagonally split hydraulic circuit servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4in front discs and 7.0in rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.
    HISTORY FILE
    Supplied new on 23rd April 1981, this delightful example has enjoyed a lifetime of incredible care and fastidious maintenance with just four keepers in total. The second long term keeper purchased the car in 1984 and kept in for an incredible 26 years, during which time a complete log of the mileage year by year was kept! Not only this, but absolutely every single MOT certificate from the very first to present year has been kept in the history file to fully document the 57,337 miles covered.
    HPI Clear.

    I know this is an old video, but I love these cars. Back in 1989, my first car was a 1981 3dr Escort 1.1 Base KDW916W. It was Arctic Blue, same colour as this, and the same age, but the polar opposite of the range with its hard blue vinyl seats, a blank plate for a radio and no headrests. A Philips Personal Stereo provided the in-car-entertainment for me back then. It was actually good fun and quite nippy. Economical too. I kept it very clean over the 2 years I owned it. You can always tell a very early mk3 apart from the others because of their metal black painted door handles, metal rear badges, and even 1.6 Ghias and non-injected XR3's had 4-speed gearboxes.

    My father had one of these in silver. Had the 3 little stripes below the rub strips.........Wrote it off after drink driving and collided with a horse and cart, the pr*ck. On a lighter note the horse sustained no injury, she was a bit spooked though, poor thing.

      @@KGFClassicCars No manual car in the Ford range had 5-speeds at all, right up until 1983MY (Oct 82) when it became optional on most, standard on few. Even X reg Granada V6's and the first Capri injections still had 4 speeds.

    Lovely car. I think the combination of Ghia trim with the 1.3 engine was quite rare, too? I recall most folk with enough money to buy the Ghia trim went for the 1.6 engine.

    Curious to know why this particular one is missing its chrome trim along the front edge of the bonnet, and around the front indicators? Is there any damage recorded on the log book? Or maybe the front wings and bonnet have been replaced at some point, due to the dreaded Ford rust problem. Unusual to replace a bonnet, but understandable to replace the wings if the arches were rusted through. But on these cars, it was usually the rear arches that rusted first, and the scuttle panel below the windscreen, and sills.

    • @KGFClassicCars
      @KGFClassicCars  7 років тому +1

      No this hadn't been damage it was a completely original car!

      KGF Classic Cars strange that it is missing its chrome trim on the front end then. Awful steering wheel. I replaced the one in my 1.6 Ghia for one from an XR3 from the same period. And painted the front grille and the wing mirror housings white to match the rest of the car. It looked awesome.

    Question for anyone who has experience with MK3s: Are the 1.6 Ghias reliable? By reliable, I mean would you trust one as your only car to start every morning to get you to work?

    • @KGFClassicCars
      @KGFClassicCars  8 років тому +1

      +Adam. Absolutely, a well maintained example will be very dependable.

    • @hermanmunster3358
      @hermanmunster3358 7 років тому +1

      Adam. I had a 1.6 Ghia, and it was totally dependable, except for a small problem with the automatic choke, in that it would not start cold. Fitted a manual choke, and problem was solved.
      Just keep your essential fluids topped up, and service it on time, dont thrash it, and it should be pretty trouble free.
      Oh, and keep an eye open for rust, especially on the rear arches, and front scuttle panel. The scuttle panel on mine nearly rusted right through.

    Ford Australia killed off Escort at mk2 and replaced it with a rebadged Mazda 323 Familia which it called Laser for the hatchback and Meteor for the sedan. Most had 1.5L engines and some had dual carbs. There was also a rare turbo. Autos had 3sp and manuals had 4sp or 5sp.

      That was probably luxury to the average Ford buyer, relative to everything else maybe not quite as luxurious but by the standards of the day it wasn't bad considering it was a Ford. Vauxhall's Astra was probably no better and neither was the Austin Maestro, only thing it had was the option of a leather interior which I'll give you and the voice computer which wasn't all that reliable from what I've heard. So yes might not be "luxury" by todays standards but for your average runabout it probably was.

    •  8 років тому +1

      I retro-fitted a complete voice and digital dash into an '89 Maestro (the same car later got an M16 as well), I can report the system was flawless!

    • @hermanmunster3358

      depechem0demusic The velour seats were considered quite luxurious back then, and the wood accents on the doors and dash were a little hint that you weren't driving an L, or a popular. Also, the carpets and sound proofing was better. Slightly tinted windows, electrically operated was an option. And a lot of them were manufactured in Germany, so longer lasting body panels, as opposed to the Dagenham dustbin Base models.
