  • The extensive history behind Scotland Road, on the outskirts of Liverpool, is a story which very few people know about. The road brought industry and retail opportunities to the area, while expansion of the road meant many of the residents of Vauxhall were forced to move out.
What's your story? If you have any memories of the Vauxhall area, use the hashtag #ScottieRd to share them.
This video was made in collaboration with the Scottie Press team - Britain's longest-running community newspaper, serving the people of Vauxhall.

The late Editor of the Scottie Press, Ron Formby often invited me to write some stories related to Scotland Road and Vauxhall.
i was born in Russell Square, which was off Arkwright Street, in the 1950s and recall what Scotland Road, Great Homer Street and Vauxhall Road areas were like before the mass demolition in the 50s 60s and 70s.
Though moving out the area in the late 50s I still remember the short 3years I attended St Anthonys school. And the friends who lived in Kew Street and Wilbram House, that always looked so well maintained. Has you left St Anthonys via the Kew Street entrance there was a Blacksmiths workshop.
When I left school in the 60s, I worked in Vauxhall Road at an advertising firm and saw the area on a daily basis for a few years and the gradual loss of population. In the 1970s I worked with a couple of the older city councillors who said they should have been more outspoken over the second tunnel and the price paid in the loss of community's that left a huge gap in the route into the city.
Anyone who walks down Tottenham Court Road, London and the mix of shops and businesses will see a glimpse of what Scotland Road and Great Homer Street looked like before it all came tumbling down.

My Mum's family lived in Wilbram House in the early 50's I think. They had a fire in the property so had to move out I believe. Mrs Harris was my Grandmother.

@@catherineevans6809 You can be rest assured that your family lived in accommodation all those years ago that many young families would jump at the chance to live in Wilbram House as it was in the mid 50s. The flats were neat and spotlessly clean, I recall a girl named Brenda Evens who lived in Wilbram House was in my class in St Anthony's 1956 -58
And our playground was facing the Presbytery of the Church at the rear of Chapel Gardens.
there was also an entrance from the playground that led to Great Homer Street that was a wonderful mix of shops pubs, and business's that provided all the family needs whatever the budget.

@@catherineevans6809 Many young families would leap at the chance to live in the Wilbram House of the 50s neat and well located if not with the mod cons that came many years later.
I recall a girl named Brenda Evans in my class at St Anthony's school in the mid 50s
Its playground faced the Church presbytery and had an entrance into Great Homer Street.
Brenda lived in Wilbram House at this time , Great homer street had very shop and business the communities needed back then

@@catherineevans6809 Wilbram House was a very attractive building in the 50s and must have had a great view for those families whose home faced Scotland Road. The Derby Cinema was next to it and I recall my sister taking me to see Tommy Steele in one of his earliest films. When I attended St Anthony's infant school in the mid 1950s I remember a girl in my class named Brenda Evans who lived in Wilbram House.
I still have decent memories of that special era, despite limited family budgets and medical treatment not advanced has it became in the 70s and beyond.

@@mediapool5251 unfortunately all the ancestral photographs with destroyed during the war the only picture I have is of my great great grandparents Mary Ann and John MacGregor who used to have the pub I wish I did have some photographs I think the pub is still standing and I think the sign is still outside? My great great grandmother lived to be 96 and lived over the Albert pub opposite LFC football ground she was knocked down by a tram in 1956 and died 10 days later in broadgreen hospital, my great great grandfather died in 1940 after his grandson was killed on the HMS Orpheus submarine he was so upset he died a few weeks later.
