I think the characters can feel pain, but it’s sort of like “phantom pain” where they aren’t being physically hurt, they sort of feel pain because the brain thinks it’s supposed to feel pain, so it connects the dots, and makes them feel some muted levels of discomfort.
I completely agree the brain can be easily tricked into thinking the body is being harmed

Most likely, though I figure Ragatha may have felt some "genuine pain" when glitching as that would be "actually damaging" due to it being an affect of abstraction, the only known actually harm that can happen in the digital circus.

It's wild that you made this entire video about if they feel pain, while missing that time Ragatha said "I am in so much paaAAAaaaiIIINNNNN-" at the end of the pilot when she was still glitchy.
Maybe when your glitchy that's the only time you feel pain?

When Ragatha's introduction panel took place, she got hit with a knife, but did not feel anything, as she makes that expression like “happens all the time” and took the knife out easily.
Shes probably (or definitely) immune to knives and sharp things.
It probably due to the kind of avatar she is she has the physics of a ragdoll the others might feel pain from knives
Yeah, she didn't really bat an eye when she got stabbed in episode 2. I think she's immune to stabbings since she's a doll. Abstraction probably hurts but everyone is probably immune to cartoon violence
That could be because Ragatha is a doll so she won't feel pain whatever she gets stabbed or cut or ripped apart. At the time she could gets her arm ripped and she wouldn't feel any pain but have a a scared reaction like how Woody got his arm ripped off from Toy Story 2.

My theory is that they can feel pain, but the feeling is drastically reduced.
Jax only flinched from getting hit straight in the face, same goes for Pomni in episode 2. Ragatha did feel the spike in episode 2, but was only stunned by the fact she had a hole through her chest.
Kinger didn't really care about getting hit with the bowling ball, since he was back to normal after landing in the pit.

I think jax can feel pain, because he said "ow" when the gloink hit him in the face lol. It might not be as much as other characters, but I would think that ragatha wouldn't feel as much pain, considering she got stabbed and said nothing, other that or it's nothing compared to being glitched
I think it just depends on the character Like ragatha is a doll so her ai character in the digital world wouldn’t feel it as much and kinger is made of some sort of wood since he is a chess piece overall I just think it varies or is phantom pain

If you've ever said ouch when a character in a video game experienced pain, then I'm pretty sure if you got hit in the head and didn't feel any pain, you would still respond as if it hurt.

I think some characters feel pain while others cant, Ragatha can get stabbed and even impaled and wont feel a thing since shes a doll, but if Pomni or Jax gets stabbed its gonna hurt. It really depends on their abilitys or their avatar (Like how Ragatha is a doll so can get ripped and Pomni can stretch) and even if they did feel pain it would mostly be minor or phantom pain, glitching is probably where it is *real* genuine pain
I think the fact that they can feel any pain at all hints that they're in a "Soma" situation instead of the "Sword Art Online" scenario everyone is assuming.
They're not humans wearing some headset, they're player profiles of people who played the game and left. Their real selves are out in the real world living their lives while the player profiles think they're stuck in the game when in reality they're just as much a part of the software as Cain is.
Given it has been confirmed the series is an adaptation of "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream" this is... *possible* but I consider it somewhat unlikely.
I also have come to the "soma" theory, though with the twist that they essentially got coppied into an OC they themselves created. This might actually explain why they have no memory of who they were in "the real world" past the simple trope of "I cant remember my own name".
They are literally all basically peoples "online identities" in a sense. There base personality and "essence" is the same, but literally projected into an entirely separate identity.

I can agree that they feel the surroundings, as when they get hit, fall or even just touch anything they react to it. I don't know about the pain though. Ragatha had a Knife in her head and a spike through her chest without even showing any pain, more surprise. Same with Kinger, when he got hit by a bowling ball, he screamed not really out of pain, but had that "Whoah whoah whoah" because he didn't expect to fall down and got surprised.
I think the abstraction causes harm though. Pomni and Ragatha in Ep1 both show signs of physical pain. Maybe the glitches somehow mix up certain cues, so that things actually start to hurt
So TL;DR: They seem to feel something and maybe even pain when stressed hard enough, while the glitches actually really hurt alot

You forgot when Jax was using zooble's arm to scratch his back and zooble grabbed his neck.
I think it's like an uncomfortable feeling along with the sensation of touch, particularly psychological when the feeling of touch is in an unusual place, like the knives or the spike... and as for glitching, I imagine that's more like the static feeling of a limb going numb, only much stronger

I'd say they feel all of minor pain. Being bumped into, ear pull, small enough to hurt not enough to be injuries. And I'd say either close to none or a very dull feeling for pain that'd be felt for injuries like the eye and knives, definitely doesn't look they were comfortable with those happening to them but not agonizing. Pomni certainly wasn't chill with being stretched out between the trucks, looked more unpleasant than anything that hurt, at least not heavily.
I would feel like that glitching effect would feel like millions of pins and needles as if your whole body was shutting down
im guessing its probbbably just very minor pain, like falling or getting flicked, so cartoonish level pain like getting hit by a bowling ball or anchor, they only recoil.
caine likely figured out how to cause small amounts of pain for immersion, but not anything that could be long term.

I think how much pain they feel equates more closely with typical video game damage (I know shocker). But think about it, one example is that swords are way more damaging irl than in video games.
I think they CAN feel pain, but only by other circus members or being abstracted. Remember, they are in a digital world, so objects inside the simulation dont hurt them. For example, in episode one, Jax got choked by zooble. Jax felt pain because since zooble is another person, Jax could feel them actually choking him. But none of the circus members can feel pain from things INSIDE the game/simulation. Since the spikes, knifes, cleavers, etc are just in-game models, they arent physical objects. Thus why ragatha is usally like "happens all the time" when an object hits her.

Ragatha is a doll and she prob wont feel apin only from knives or scretches or stuff. Cause shes a doll. I think she only feels pain from glitching . As if you go to glitch shorts, scroll down and you will see a short video of ragatha getting hit by a kitchen knife in her head and she was super chill about it.
For kinger, his head is also made of wood. So he wont feel knives. I dont know whta his body is made from but maybe its a human body so he got hurt when a bowling ball hitted his stomach.
Seems very much like their bodies have much, MUCH more durability against cutting and piercing, and also stretching, but their weak spot seems to be actual brute force and also glitches.

I think Gooseworks said something about this in the GlitchX event, the characters CAN actually feel pain, just that an injury it's a liiittle less painful than in real Life, I think this happens because Caine thinks the players would get crazy for not feeling any pain or that's what I understood 😅
I feel like Ragatha was a ragdoll cause, as we see, she's the one who gets beaten the most in the 2 episodes. She might have been experiencing this in real life too.

Ragatha does experience a lot of pain, on the first episode where she begs Caine to bring her back to normal she literally says "I'm in so much pain" in a glitchy voice
I find it wild how he said that Ragatha felt the most pain, when he said he took both mental n physical pain into account and since Ep1 Pomni as been mentally suffering 😂
Maybe their pain feels more like pain in the head like a head ache or a brain freeze. Cuz the head set might squeeze or vibrate your head. I know some game controls vibrate when your character takes damage. And I think in Germany this one game shocks u if u lose

I think there’s two types of pain in the circus.
1. Real World pain
Real World pain can be caused by an object or phenomenon irl, while in the circus, it doesn’t follow the rules of our reality, so most of the pain just puts some discomfort on them.
2. Digital pain
Digital pain is something that can not occur irl, only being exclusive to the circus. This is what I think the concept of “pain” is inside the circus, like how Pomni glitched through the floor or how Ragatha got glitched by Kaufmo, or even abstraction.
here's a theory: when thepassive abilities of the characters happen then they WOULDNt feel pain but when it's other stuff they do really feel pain, but not that much afterall

Ragatha - Ragdoll , doesn’t feel pain.
Jax - Rubberhose Rabbit , Cartoon physics.
Kinger - Chess Peice, detachable eyes along with floating hands AND always 3 steps ahead.
Gangle - ….Depression..

I have a feeling for Jax when he first entered the circus Caine possibly did the cute minigame “Gather the Goilnks” And The Goilnks do seem to cause damage to Jax but not literal Because when he gets hit in the face he might feel pain similar to Ragtaha

Let me crack the code.
So what we have seen from the PILOT (Or episode one if you're a monster.) is that the abstracted monsters can actually cause pain to the circus members, as a result, making them glitchy and kinda unstable.
But if it's anything normal like a stab to the chest or a gun shot, it wouldn't hurt but it still has some sort of scar.
So technically it depends what happens to them.

its already been confirmed by Goose that they can feel pain but they cant die... unless they "glitch" out or abstract, thats already been confirmed by Goose. (most of the time its for cartoonish slaptic .. Goose has said this once.)
I do because on glitches Channel it should us shorts all the characters and Ragithua got hit in the head with a kitchen knife the same look in episode 2 but she pulled it out with ease and she look like she fell no pain at all
They dont feel pain with knifes and sharp things when the trailer was out with the character meets us but when it was ragatha a kitchen knife throwed at ragathas face and ragatha pulled the knife out

Pretty sure that pain depends on body that players got when they entered the amazing digital circus. Like a doll or a wooden chest figure wouldn't be hurt by some knives.

I would like it better if Ragatha had a more human-like appearance so that way, when she got stabbed in the chest with the spikes, her blood would have gone all over the place. And it would have been even better if she had a second spike going through her stomach as well so that even more blood would go all over the place!

No dude, it’s cartoon logic so that means I only feel pain when it’s funny. And even then it’s not that big a deal they just can’t experience paying on the same level as people would in real life. It’s basically all psychological.

an explanation for them saying "ow" when they're hit with something is probably some natural reflex and also probably just saying something because of being frightened rather than pain

I don't believe they can feel pain in the same way as humans. Based on cartoon logic, they may experience pain, but it's often either muffled or non-existent, as is common in cartoons. The only way they might experience intense pain is if they glitch.
Yea so being stabbed or impaled would probably feel like a tiny pinch, or maybe not at all cause in Ragatha's introduction video she acted like it was a minor inconvenience
