The most enjoyable Biopic that I've watched in recent years is "Weird", the Weird Al biopic. It understands that it's a send up of the usual musician origin story, in the vein of Walk Hard, and is fun to watch.
It does THE MOST amazing job of skewering the way biopics re-write history in ways that aren’t harmless or trivial. The turn where Al’s music is “stolen” is genius.
I haven't seen that one yet, but I probably should. I heard that Weird Al decided that Radcliffe was sufficiently weird after seeing him do the elements song on the Graham Norton show. I can see why - Daniel Radcliffe is slightly mad, in a good way.
Al having that shredded 6 pack wasn't even for the movie. Radcliffe just had abs and Al thought it was funny. It's the greatest movie involving a small obscure accordion player.
Seeing the trailer for this movie at the cinema for a different film was so surreal. It had the energy of a student production putting on a production of Romeo and Juliet and changing something random to seem artsy and distinctive.
This is the best comment I've read tonight. I'm disappointed that you only had one like before mine. Damon Albarn is rad, Gorillaz are rad, and a fictional animated biopic about the formation of a cartoon band could in fact be one of the best movies to happen to music since Pink Floyd's _The Wall._ I applaud you, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@@notsyzagts7967 they're too corporate now. If Jamie and Damon were still at the heads and full control, then hell yeah, but most of it is controlled by studio execs who don't care.
I think the symbolism of the monkey is good for helping us understand how Robbie Williams might have felt about himself! Perhaps he viewed himself as different from everyone else (in a negative way). Less refined, maybe. More animalistic and impulsive. I have ADHD, and I can definitely relate to that feeling- the feeling that you're just not quite human-ing in the correct way. I'll often refer to myself as a "creature" as a joke. Idk, the metaphor spoke to me!
Animals in clothes will never not be entertaining! The monkey performing shirtless on stage like a shirtless boy band idol was my favorite so far; I'm sure it's a serious movie but at the very worst it will be funny to see the monkey.
I saw the trailer for this in the ads while waiting in the Cinema... I was very confused. Also the trailer was super long and basically showed you the *entire* plot before even watching the movie. The Monkey is kinda interesting - like in the trailer you see him in tons of different outfits and looks, emotions, but that's more a cgi thing. I don't care too much about biopics themselves though. *Wait* so it is about a real person? I thought it was a real person at first, then thought 'no way.' I do know who Robbie is, luckily. And the metaphor of being a monkey can be very interesting. I did feel like possibly seeing the film with mild curiosity. Like I can as easily buy into this as Paddington.
Yeah he's real, and he's telling his story in a very raw and honest way, which makes a nice change from the typical gloss. I think it's an incredible good music biopic... but also it is still a biopic, so if that's not your thing, it might not be the best
The director of Better Man is coming off of directing a Pink movie and producing Rocketman. I'm not sure what to make of that, kind of going from expected to unexpected, but thought I would share.
People want to have it both ways again. If it's another remake, prequel, reboot, or sequel, people lose their minds and criticize. Then when movies take swings, a big risk, or try to do something different or unique, people recoil and call it weird or a gimmick and don't support it. I know people kinda want something in between but I just hope more people would at least acknowledge the double standard more.
I won't necessarily criticise people for being put off by this film. It's very, very hard to market it in a way where it doesn't look like a cheap gimmick. But it's still a shame because it was a really great film
@@mylittlethoughttreeI honestly would've watched it if not for the monkey. It destroys any sense of immersion for me. That's me though, can't speak for everyone else.
Unrelated to the topic of the video but I was watching the background footage you put in, and I recognised it from when I went there while on holiday with my family. It was just cool to see a location I recognise in a video that I would never have guessed had that in it.
Never thought you would talk about Better Man! Looking forward to watching this, as a big Robbie Williams fan :D The monkey is probably the least surprising thing about this movie I've seen so far ... knowing Robbie as an artist and as a person. And I'm very happy to hear that it's actually a good movie as well :)
Someone already made the comment about Robbie Williams not being famous in America and that was a bizarre thing to say to me, dude had a couple hits and had a major moment in America, it was in the 2000s, but some people know him and like him, he just didn’t stay relevant for whatever reasons, but he did try to break out, there’s so many people that are popular in Britain and Europe that no one knows in America, some US acts blew up first in Britain and Europe then crossed over
I can’t imagine who’d want to watch a biopic about Robbie Williams, never mind one where he’s a CGI monkey. I’ve seen the trailer a couple of times and it’s one of the most moronic things I’ve ever seen.
I certainly gained no interest from the trailers. It looks such a dumb idea and I'm no fan of Robbie Williams... however it was a very pleasant shock to discover it's actually really good. Can't blame anyone for not paying money to see something that hardly appears enticing, but I don't think it's fair to write something off as garbage that you haven't seen
Felt crazy as shit reading the comments lol. All I could think was God this awful, I would burn alive with embarrassment even suggesting it and I adore weird movie stuff. The "it's such a clever metaphor!" Comments are absolutely KILLING ME though. Not that my opinion matters, I'm glad they enjoy the movie and have something to enjoy talking about. But I feel a lot of the stuff people are saying are just them not being able to truly admit they just liked the gimmick, they just enjoyed a monkey rockstar, and feel the need to explain themselves by applying all that metaphor stuff on it. IMO it's no more creative or clever than just an animated biopic. I also tend to do that which why my bells are ringing so damn loud.
The best musician biopic is Amadeus. Simply because it doesn't just focus on Mozart but it focuses in Salieri being jelaous of Mozart's fame and glory. I wish more biopics of musicians, or anyone else, tried new ways to tell their stories from a narrative perspective and not just *M O N K E*
The funniest thing i heard about this movie is someone saying that there was soo little interest in a robbie documentary that they turned him into a monkey in order to get some attention. Pretty sure Take That didn’t get big in the US because they were pretty much a boy band that sucked ass. and in the 90s we had plenty of our own boy bands that sucked slightly less ass. But I’m pretty sure *NSYNC and Justin Timberlake did quite well in the UK and Europe comparatively so…I think it’s just that Take That and Williams are just ehh not great..not very good.
I dunno, it's quite a big leap to base it all on US having superior music. It takes a big marketing push for a popstar to crack a foreign market and there just wasn't that much push from Robbie Williams. Some suggest he didn't want to in order to maintain some semblance of privacy. Having seen the film and knowing where he was once he conquered the UK, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a need to slow down from an emotional position. I'm not a fan of his, nor do I know any Just Timberlake or NSYNC, but I can certainly appreciate there is a rawness and some level of depth to a lot of Robbie Williams music. As far as popstars go, I don't think he's a bad one at all. But I agree Take That suck, yeah
I immediately thought of the fantastic music video "You know you like it" by DJ Snake and Aluna George when I saw this. I had never heard of it until I clicked on your video. I reckon the music video is Robbie's timeline if he became a drug addict?
Wait tvis is an actual biopic? I thought it was just some werid very very werid like fictional monkey who becomes famous and it's like a mocumentary but with a biopic
This latest formula has been spit out since Jamie Foxx in Ray...and the Johnny Cash film..and paint by numbers since the 2pac and then the Biggie Biopics..which were moderately successful..spawning the Freddie Mercury and Elton John biopics. Things got real interesting after Weird Al's biopic dropped
The bar was set high after Weird
To be fair, that's kind of what I expected from a biopic on Weird Al Yankovic.
I'd argue and say Rocketman walked so Weird Al's could run
