My ancestors came West in 1847 to Utah. There was one wagon train called the Applegate Company of 1853. There is a children's headstone dated 1853 in Salt Lake. It's obvious by date of deaths that 22 children ages 17-new born infants died along the way West, from Iowa to Utah. There were 22 wagons and 200 pioneers. That is a 10% death rate just among the children. The number of adults that died along the way are not mentioned. My 3rd great grandfather's first wife died in the Winter Quarters in 1847. It was no picnic going West. And then when they got to Utah; the Utah Indian wars with Utes took many more victims on both sides. My 3rd great grandfather James Russell Ivie, was slaughtered by Utes on 10 June, 1866, Scipio, Millard County, Utah.
I think the oregon trail is really overrated and admired in a wrong way. I mean, I also like reading about and watching movies about the Oregon trail, it's romantic and adventurous. But at the same time, it should've been something like injury, sickness, fights, battle, sickness, sickness, diahrrea, injury, and miscarriage...
Seems the people went to cannibalism pretty quickly. I know you can survive for a while, not forever, if you can get water. And you're telling me they were unable to forage for field mice or something like that. How green were these greenhorns? Nope, first sign of trouble eat a relative. It's like it was there all the time and they just needed an excuse
Relatives were already dead when they resorted to cannibalism. It’s not like they killed people just to eat them. So they foraged through the land and the very first thing they found was 100 lbs of meat.
The West wasn't wild, it was already settled peacefully by the people that live there for a thousand years. With the exception of the Cherokee and a few other tribes that slaughtered and enslaved all of the other tribes
"Naturally the white folks wouldn't let us in there circle so me made our own." If you what this is from you have a great sense of humor. Don't post the answer just post your favorite line let's see how many we can get.
How do you think you would have done if you had to trek the Oregon Trail?
I would have made sure my traveling companions were nice and plump
I am thankful I don't have to and I would only do it if I am driving a reliable car on I-84 these days but at that time I would rather not!

Those people where tough. A lot more tougher than we have today, and that includes me.
Thank you.
Thanks I like the information

Check out “the donner party” free on UA-cam. It’s as grim as you would expect. Possibly more so.
Is that where the term eat me comes from?
What movies were used in making this video? I recognized The Revenant and Dances With Wolves
A lot of the scenes were of the movie, "Seven Alone".
One more mountain. Free on UA-cam. Check it out. Also the way west, lonesome dove (though not headed for Oregon, but is best for free on UA-cam.

My last name is Utter. I’ve heard this story several times and own the book.
My name is Virginia Wolfe. How many jokes have you had to endure because of your last name?
Wagon trains. A beautiful artifact in these days!
I missed nothing. Flying there is good enough.

Excuse me while I whip this out.
If you don't have enough wagons for a circle, you can always make a "half moon"
"Whew! They're darker than us!"
