      Yep i remember this ;)
Some guy i know cracked some games and put their own Intro before the Game starts.
They call themself FAA = Federation against Atari .
And that was really mean ;)
Amiga 500 was back in time the mainstream computer ( after C-64 ), and i know only some rich students with snobbish behaviour who owns an Atari ST / Mega ST ;)
And possible this was one of the reason of hate against a good Homecomputer !

I never owned it because at the time I had the Commodore 64 and then I switched to the Amiga 500, but I remember that seeing an Atari ST in operation at the end of 1985 was like being the protagonist of a science fiction movie, especially in Italy, where the first consoles like Atari 2600 and Mattel Intellivision had been marketed only three years before.

Funny thing about the ST vs. Amiga. The design team for the Atari 800 (headed by Jeff Miner) built and designed the Amiga. The design team for the C64 (headed by Shiraz Shivji) built and designed the Atari ST. So... in actuality the ST is really the successor to the C64 / C128 and the successor to the Atari 8-bit computers was the Amiga!

I'm surprised by ranks 1 and 2... I never knew these games were officially ported to the ST. I only knew about Crystal Castles. Of course, Atari already had the rights for the conversions from their home versions, but I thought by the time they issued the ST, their times of making games themselves would have been over. At least over here in Austria I never saw an Atari release for the ST... not that I cared much about them anyway since I had a C-64 and an Amiga. And of course, these 2 games were not officially ported to the Amiga!

One oddity here is that the conversion of Road Runner looked different to how I remembered it - particularly the colour palette. Thought perhaps I was remembering it incorrectly, but checked a couple of other videos on UA-cam and sure enough, they match my memory and look closer to the arcade. Weird... could the version you played be a modified/bootleg version? No big deal, just curious!

absolutely agree with your number one. ST Moon Patrol rocks. (still not as good as Vector Patrol on the Vectrex (which blows the arcade version out of the water) but it is a modern homebrew, so not a fair comparison.
What is missing is Battle Zone...the first 3D tank simulator, the ST port is not only perfect arcade port, it's not a port. It is emulation of the actual arcade machine. That makes it hands down the greatest non-Neo-Geo home version of any era-specific game.
The Vectrex version (Stramash Zone) still wins out by nature of it being a vector game on a vector console (as well as having the most impressive overlay ever produced for the system), but again it's a modern homebrew, so disqualified.

First, you guessed right, 'Super-Hang-On' didn't have the sound glitches on the original hardware. Second my list of Arcade ports on the ST which I consider good ones:
'1943', 'Alien Syndrome', 'BadLands', 'Bionic Commando' (except for the scrolling), 'Bomb Jack', 'Chase HQ', 'Crystal Castles', 'Enduro Racer', 'Gemini Wing', 'Ghouls'n Ghosts', 'Hard Drivin', 'Hot Rod', 'Ikari Warriors', 'Last Duel', 'LED Storm', 'Marble Madness', 'Mercs', 'Operation Wolf', 'Outrun Europe', 'Rainbow Islands', 'Rampage', 'Rampart', 'Robocop', 'Rod-land', 'R-Type II', 'Saint Dragon', 'Silkworm', 'Slap Fight', 'Smash TV', 'Strider', 'Super Monaco GP', 'Test Drive 2: The Duel', 'Toobin' and 'Volfied'.
And then there a a lot of faithful versions of early 80s Arcade games in the PD/Homebrew sector.

Moon Patrol seems to be good... but how they've didn't noticed that the most far mountains layer has a milky-blue color which represents so called "air perspective". Yes, the moon has no air :)) But it's the artistic rule. So my mention is that they've failed by choosing the deep blue color for those mountains in the ST port.

Amiga fan who's largely tolerant of the ST here (I saw it first and did want one until I saw the Amiga). I've always loved Moon Patrol and its clones for some reason, but the fact that it and Joust are the top 2 isn't actually a great advert for the ST, that it could do early-80s games better than contemporary titles. Super Sprint is one I wish the Amiga had. Pac-Mania and Arkanoid are pretty poor compared to the Amiga versions, though still quite playable. Most of the others are little different, usually-inferior sound aside, which is to say they get nearer the ST's limits than the Amigas, if we're honest. The only stinker for me is Black Tiger - I'm not willing to excuse it on the 'it's better on a super-expensive upgraded model not designed for games' basis.

The STE and everything based on it were great machines, but the original ST and everything up to the STE were kind of weak, and wore their hastily cobbled together nature on their sleeve. Not *bad* mind you: its lack of much custom hardware could've been a strength had Atari been better managed, and an alternate universe where they, like Apple, survived (the Atari of today it a totally different entity) would be an interesting one.

yeah... Amiga fanboys these can be very loudmouthed, i don't know what their agenda is really as it is just the game on another system... but of course if the ST never would have existed then the Amiga games probably would have been better... but on the other hand if the Amiga would never have existed then the Atari ST games would have been better. I never was never against the Amiga back in the day.. i was happy with my C64 and Atari ST :)
You show some great games in the video... i used to play Super Sprint and Buggy Boy a lot when i was young, but the game i think is the technically best arcade port on the ST is "Rod Land"... i think it has even less slowdowns than the original arcade version if i remember correctly.

Super Hang-On - 4:00 - See how that green biker is leaning right toward you? For some reason, all the bikes in both the ST and Amiga versions try to intentionally hit you. It's not like that in any other versions of the game.
Space Harrier - I actually thought the 16-bit home ports were rather poor. They looked great in still images, but they were choppy, the enemy shots were way too fast and they couldn't even be bothered to use the arcade sound effects.

      @lurkerrekrul 2 роки тому

@@jasonlee7816 It's really not. The graphics and music are nice, but that's about it. Neither the voices "Get ready!" or the sound effects are anything like the arcade. It's missing the "You're doing great!" voice clip, the ceilings in levels 4 and 9, and the second bonus level before the ending boss rush. Also, the animation is kind of choppy (especially in the bonus level!) and the enemy shots are about twice as fast as the arcade version. Also, minor thing, but the bonus level is missing the explosions when you hit the trees, and it makes the gun sound rather than the explosion sound.

I have heard the Atari ST was a very capable machine with some great games. Now, I never experienced the micros as I live in the US so I really don't know. I started with the Nes and Master System in 1986. I moved onto the Sega Genesis in 1989 and kept going forward like that. Which micro computer do you prefer now?
It sounds like you had a rivalry like the Genesis vs. Snes here. While I had both the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes my loyalty was always with Sega. Even being required to buy 6-button controllers I still went with Sega on most cases. I also thought the Snes here looked like a cheap piece of junk. Our Snes was such an eyesore that I often hid it in my entertainment center in my room. Sorry...went on a tangent.

      1040 ST = Mega ST ;)
Normal ST had around 8 mhz and Mega ST had 16 mhz.
And thats the reason some games run so smooth ;)
In my teenage years i know only 2 guy who owns an Mega ST, all other guy used the standard ST cause this Mega ST was to expensive for the most Kids / Teens ;)

@Old Style Gaming Thanks for covering the Atari ST... I was an ST Owner back in the day and I have to be honest, I feel it's got a bad rap over time... Yeah, I have to admit it was far surpassed by the Amiga, I was always JEALOUS of Amiga Owners when they got LEMMINGS 2 - THE TRIBES and the ST Version seemed to vanish...
...But the Atari ST was capable of far more than its ever been given credit for - I was never into the Demo Scene back then, but looking back at some ofthose amazing demos, The Atri ST had an ASTOUNDING Sound Chip - In fcat to many who have torn apart the hardware, it was BETTER THAN THE AMIGA!!!
So I have to admit that I now find it hard to understand how the Amiga was laways considered the better system.... And I feel it comes down to something that back then I would never have thought of but is 100% True! The simpel fact is - The Amiga was more accessible for Programming!
I was never into progrmamming, The most I ever did was a few BASIC type in's from the Amstrad CPC days, but Amiga did seem to embrace that... It was easy to access even for a beginner... The Atari ST was AWFUL for that! LOL!
Still, I loved both systems... Obviously growing up with the Atari ST - I wil always be a defender... However, I have to admit that over time, The Amiga and its ease of use - Yeah, The Amiga was the better system overall!

some of those ports was better on other machinces. Example Road Runner is much better on the C64 and Pac-Mania is better on both Spectrum (ace music here) and on the Amiga (a game that was not a direct typical Atari st -> Amiga port). Etc Road Runner a game, that has controls like asss in the arcade original (but much nicer on those ports as they could not simulate the trackball anyway).
But yes Rainbow Island is a great port (which is missing here) to all formats its was ported too and also such a game that matched home computers perfectly. Sad that game is missing. Its mightbeen one of the best well done port all around (its not that often happens a good arcade game also got a good ports on all formats its was released too).
But regaardless they can all still been fun to play here. Im even has played some games im think was nice, but relairty was bad back in the time. hihi. Here on the Amiga, but that does not matter ;-).

    • @spacefractal
      @spacefractal 2 роки тому

framerate does matter ;-), which is quite choppy here like 16fps (unlike 50fps on the C64) and you move so close to the camera edge which is so stupid. Also Seed Meter is clearly better on the C64 too with a smart uses of sprites. But still.... Its much much better on the Atari ST/C64 than the arcade, which stinks of the ass controls used in the arcade.
