This series is not a retrospective or a review, it is a retelling of the story itself. It is also being done from the perspective of someone playing through the games for the first time beginning with Metroid Prime 1. No info or knowledge from a wiki, comics or other games come in until the end - this is a chronological retelling of the story, its lore and overall experience from beginning to end.
In this video series, we retell the story of Samus Aran and her adventures on planet Aether.
Those who rule the darkness take many shapes and many names. In this chapter of her story, they are known as The Ing; a race created out of a cataclysmic event that tore the planet into two halves. They govern the half of shadow with tyranny and absolutism and now turn to conquer all that lies outside of their domain. Pinned against the odds, it's a race against time and the forces of evil to save the Luminoth, the planet and perhaps, the galaxy.

@@ZarHakkar except we now know thats not exactly true, only the chozo of Tallon IV and Zebes got wiped, but in Dread we see that there are still chozo around ,they are just very reclusive.
the question is did the luminoth mean humans or chozo, not sure if they ever interacted with the human race but they definitely state they interacted with the Chozo, which would lead to hypothesizing that they would recognize Chozo technology, which Samus is absolutely wrapped in, maybe they thought the chozo would be targeted next since they are one of the more tech and spiritually advanced races in the galaxy.

Of all the logs in this game, the one of the Federation Marine by name of Angseth always puts a smile on my face. She was apparently a major Samus Aran fangirl, apparently according to a fellow Marine's logs, going as far as getting into fights with her fellow Troopers over the famed bounty hunter's achievements.
And there was another Marine that didn't believe Samus actually existed
Then there's how the pirates STILL believe she's using some kind of advanced cloaking tech to hide her ship; when it's always just sitting in their damned backyard 😂
@@pianoman7753 It's theorized that the ship actually does cloak when you aren't nearby which explains how despite numerous patrols they cant find it this applies mainly in Prime 1 since their claim to the planet was mostly uncontested (aside from the Chozo Ruins and other sacred Chozo sites due to the Ghosts always ganking them whenever they tried to venture into those areas) so there wasn't anything stopping them from searching for her ship whereas in Prime 2 Pirates kind of had their hands full so trying to find it probably wasn't a very high priority.
Mine is the numerous logs showing the Pirates being confused by how Samus seems to be in two places at once, followed by the slow, horrifying realization that there's now two of her disrupting their plans, and unanimously wondering what higher power they pissed off to live in a universe where this is a possibility.
I remember dying to that Dark Alpha Splinter so many times as a kid. And I can remember the exact day I beat it
I have the exact same experience with Thardus. As a kid with split custody, I went to my dad's every other weekend, that's where my GameCube was. I remember it took me a couple weekends to finally do it!
I beat it my 1st try on normal. On hard mode though, I was like....whaaat?? Like straight stopped in my tracks at the beginning 😂
I came here looking for copper and I found gold. This video is so fucking well done get this man more ATTENTION.

Per the community poll we have decided to split this series into 3 parts. The 2nd part will cover the middle section of the game and the 3rd part will cover the latter third + finale. Indeed. I almost can't wait to see it, a few days ago i started to play MP2 for the first time & i am about to properly enter Dark Agon Waste for the first time & let me tell you, no place in MP1 freaks me out like the Dark world does.
I would also like to change my names for the Elite Pirates & the Omega Pirate. The Elite Pirates is called The Phazon Licorish Lieutenants & The Omega Pirate is called The Phazon Captain O-hoy.

In the mid to late 2000s i & a friend played the games once, but i was allways in the backseat comming up with tricks to fight bosses & sovling puzzels. It was your video of Metroid Prime 1 that inspierd me to buy a Camecube, buying the gamse & playing them for myself. for the first time in the driverseat. It is a whole Other M Morphballgame when you playing the games for yourself VS sitting in the backseat helping out.
Ok here comes all the pirate names for MP1 The wonded are called The Poor Bastards. The normal ones are The Normies, The flying ones are The Mosquitos, the ones that are you can only see with the thermo visor are called The Shy Suckers. Then we have The Banana Bunch, The Prune Peeps, The Ice-Cream Chuds, The Chili Commrades. Then at last we have The Phazon Licorish Lieutenants & The Phazon Captain O-hoy. The O in O-Hoy stands for Omega. (As for MP2) The ones that are infected by the ing is called The Anoy(ing). Because thoes that are in the room where you first opens the portal to Dark Agon is the only ones that gave me a Game Over so far.

There are many games I missed out on as a kid, one being the entire Legend of Zelda serious. I've only played a little bit of Ocarina of Time as an Adult but i love it!!

I am glad to inform that Amorbis has now been defeated & the main Agon Chaoter has now been completed. So from now on i get to listen to the wonderfull music of the Bog.

@@TW33NSW4GGaming According to some interviews, the japanese side of the metroid series didn't actually know what a bounty hunter _was,_ they just thought it was a "space hero" of some kind.
This video, both for prime 1 and prime 2, single handedly (or more accurately dual handedly) changed my entire perspective on the story telling of these games. I remember never reading almost any of the scans growing up, I would scan just for completion's sake and never questioned or read any further. Watching these videos makes me want to go back, play them again, and to *actually* pay attention. This is beautifully done, beautifully executed, inspires the viewer, and I want to see more. Criminally under rated, 10/10, one of the best videos I've seen, and definitively the best video-essay I've seen period (if this would still be classified as such). Jolly good show.

@@mikaelrivacov5705 That's awesome! I'll definitely say I've been diligent now as an adult to pay attention to those details like each lore and log and things that shape their world. As a kid and even teen playing both MP1 and MP2, I had an understanding of the plot but not the details that moved it forward. That's where things get interesting 🤓
God I can't wait for part 2, plus I can't wait to hear the Torvus Bog music, the best song in the entire prime trilogy in my opinion.
It would be cool to revisit these worlds 1000s of years later and see them rejuvenated. Agon grasslands, Torvus coast, etc.

Excellent video. I have to check out the others in this series. Prime 2 is my favourite of the trilogy because of its rich, narrative lore, so I'm so glad I found this!
One thing that I'm really glad you mentioned, but is shockingly easy to miss, is that Samus showed up literally at the last possible moment. The Ing had the Energy Transfer Module and were coming for the final Energy Controller. That alpha splinter she killed was going to lead the final assault against U-Mos, who had put the remaining luminoth people in stasis to await whatever outcome of that battle would be (almost certainly death). Samus showing up as a new contender to the drama that was playing out on at least 3 fronts at the same time took everyone by surprise, and if she hadn't nabbed the Energy Transfer Module when she did, that would have been the end of Aether.
Excellent in depth explanation of the surprisingly in-depth story lying under the surface of this game! I never made the connection between the faded out plants and the dark trees on Dark Aether! Very cool!
Thank you so much!! There are so many details that seem hidden in plain sight in Metroid Prime and Echoes and I really appreciate that about the designers and writers. You can simply blast your way through the game and fully enjoy it, you can do so while also paying attention to the story, or you can the game slowly really pulling the details apart. I can say I've done all three! My first playthrough of Prime was as a little kid so as I've grown up with the game, my appreciation has grown with it, that really was my motivation for making this Stories Retold series.

Absolutely phenomenal video. I liked Prime but never really meshed with it, when I went on to Prime 2? Everything that didn’t click in Prime 1 was fixed and made Prime 2 the masterpiece that I know it as today.

I'd love to know more about the Light of Aether and how the planet's energy is created and conduced. But perhaps part of the beauty is the mystery that surrounds the energy itself and how it all really works.

I always loved the scanning in these games. Combined with the ambiance ... extremely unique and wonderful music and sound design.... these games were sooooooo far ahead of their time. Current games are still catching up.
Agreed! They way everything is layered in a way that allows for the deeper story to be both readily available to discover but also so easily to miss I think adds to the many layers of the series. I think it takes a certain artistic skill and direction to do that.

ever since I picked up MP1 as a very small child I've been very fascinated by the greater story the scans tend to tell. it's such a treat to find someone who also has this passion who's able to organize everything in such a way that the pieces fit perfectly. patiently waiting for part 2, hope to see you continue this series with the rest of the trilogy!

I listen to this from time to time when I miss playing this game. You know why I love your story telling? Because you include some of the lore, the world. The environmental storytelling. Can't wait for pt 3. The fortress was my favorite area.

Even though i played Prime 2 for my first time last year (amazing game another 10/10) i still remember all these logs and visual details. There some new one you pointed out. I hope that woth prime 1 remaster on switch more people will get into metorid and eventually when prime 4 comes it it'll be hype

This is so amazing and emotional, dadicated the fan way it makes me dive into atmosphere just with your words alone, i would love to have the whole series retrospective like that - all of the 2D Metriods and spin=offs like Other M (despite being questionable somewhat likeable in some things) and such.

This is amazing! I loved Prime and Prime 3 but the 2nd one was always my least favorite. But this series is making me have more appreciation for it and makes me wanna go back and replay it. So many little details I didn't notice!

Really great video, though I believe there's one log you missed from the Space Pirates that comes last in chronological order, worried about your arrival, there being two hunters now and about a scout witnessing your first visit to Dark Aether and meeting with Dark Samus + Ing.

Only thing to mention the "base in the cliffs" the pirates refer to was actually Sanctuary Fortress not The Great Temple they overan the Luminoth and stole Sanctuary's energy hence "Increased planetary instability"
New names for the bosses of MP1. Parasite Queen = That Glitchy Bug. Flaagrah = Jerk in the Plant. Thardus = Fred Phazonstone. Meta Ridley = Robo Rooster & Metroid Prime P1 = Itsy Bitsy Metroid, Metroid Prime P2 = Phazon Babyface.
Can't wait for the second part, you just did an incredible job.

Its rumored that Ing in this game we're originally Phaz-Ing aka the Phazon variant of inglets encountered late in Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Its said that the Phaz-Ing that we're on the Leviathan that hit Aether and toar open the rift the created the Dark Aether Dimension, we're either somehow altered or simply evolved from beings of Phazon to beings Dark matter.
This absolutely has something to do with the Light of Aether.
Both Phazon and the LoA are forms of "planetary life energy", seemingly supernatural manifestations of the energy of life on a specific planet, being present in all lifeforms native to that world.
Aeion, from SR388, is a form of planetary life energy too.
The Leviathan Seed's impact on Aether is a unique event in which two forms of planetary energy came into direct contact with each other, in a violent fashion no less, I believe the result of these two forces interacting is what tore open a hole in spacetime and created Dark Aether.
The "phaaze-ing" that were present on the leviathan then adapted to using Dark Aether's "dark matter" as the basis for their biology, as it seems that the Aether Leviathan was destroyed on impact, leaving them without a continuous source of phazon to feed off of.

I just realized, if Samus's suit can't translate the Luminoth language, how can she understand U-Mos?
He's clearly using telepathy, so either telepathy bypasses language barriers or, since the Luminoth are familiar to the Chozo, he recognized that Samus was wearing Chozo armor and spoke to her in Chozo.

Also, you say it is an automated message, but I'm not so sure. Why would an automated message have any reason to assume a deficiency in our translation software? Plus, activating each hologram again gives it a line of additional dialogue.
Given the Luminoth's psychic affinities, I propose that these holograms are instead a limited manifestation of the deceased Luminoth's consciousness, stored on a device before death so that they can continue to give pertinent wisdom and advice to those who need it.

I don't think this is referring to the Great Temple, rather, it is referring to Sanctuary Fortress. The Great Temple is not atop a mountain, but the Fortress is. Also the Great Temple's energy wasn't stolen, so there would be no rise in planetary instability.
Really good pick ups here! If you happened to have played Mass Effect, I draw up a lot of parallels to the Protheon race in that game to the Luminoth. In that game, they were essentially the pinnacle race in the galaxy for a period and evolved to a point of being able to interpret communication by touch and basically obtain memories, language and communication pretty much instantly. Maybe Samus was unable to read the holograms until U-Mos spoke and begot their language or, maybe the Energy Transfer Module of Luminoth design was the keystone that allowed her to understand U-mos?

This is such a great game, a very very very close second to prime 1, there are certain things this does better than the first but the first one just did such a fantastic job of invoking certain emotions that nearly no game has matched

Despite being labeled a bounty hunter or a mercenary for the longest time has she ever been paid for any of her missions? I haven't played all of the games so maybe I'm wrong but she looks like she undertakes missions for her own purposes rather than being hired to do so. Like she's there to protect the universe and not for some monetary benefit. I know a bit of her backstory and she seems like she's a greatly caring individual who wants to help people. She seems like a ruthless killer to her enemies but outside of combat she's kind, compassionate even. She has a strong sense of fighting evil where she finds it. I don't see her fighting Space Pirates day in and day out for money.
Honestly that's a great point! Should couldn't have been paid by the Chozo other than being paid in honor and respect and I'm guessing the war economy hit a bit of a snag with the Luminoth there at the end 😆 Since I haven't played 3 yet, maybe there's still some hope for some compensation.

I’m pretty sure I was 8 when I first got this game. It took me almost 2 years to find the first Dark Agon Temple key😂 then I found a game informer magazine at a thrift shop containing a Metroid prime 2 walkthrough 😊
Game Informer!!! I have a guide for Metroid Prime, but not Echoes. In fact mine is a Prime & Fusion combo guide. I remember reading that guide like the morning newspaper with breakfast just studying the Chozo Ruins maps to find all the upgrades.

That very well may be, good catch! It would make sense given that the elevator to Sanctuary is closer to that end of the Temple grounds. Definitely something to consider.
