    I adopted a former puppy mill dog a month ago. Thought enough exposure therapy to a leash/harness with simple walks (nothing drastic like groomer, vet, etc.) would help him, but no, he's still petrified of them (but does calm down once we're walking). I'll have to try this method out! Slow n steady wins the race with TLC to boot.... love it!

    Ok so, I tryid this out with my Beagle, he's 9 months now and each time I'd pick up the leash he just runs away. So today I tryed it out, all your tips and he seems to be much more comfortable with me picking up the leash!! Thanks a lot for the advice!

    Hi thank you for the great video, how to take him outside for daily walk meanwhile?
    My dog is a one year toy poodle and he has been always scared of his leash, harness, winter jackets. How can I take him put during this process of conditioning?

    Yes he backs up from the leash clip. When I did clip it on him he lays down and won't move too much all sad. When he bites my fingers I go get the leash and lay across my leg and he stops. Our other small dog is like put my leash on and go walking....thx for your info. He get back to normal after a day.

    I adopted an abused podenco and he is still so scared of the leash. He cowers in a corner of our couch when we put it on him. He stays at arms length when I try to put it on him after an off leash run. impossible. Luckily he follows me, but he won’t come when called. I have hired 3 dog behavior specialists to help him and none of them have suggested acclamating him in this way. Makes total sense. I looking forward to trying this with my beautiful baby.

      @@joshuabodgers9238 This has been going on for years. I can get him more relaxed when I sit next to him then casually put his collar on him. But I am not sure I can ever get him back on the leash if he can keep himself just out of reach.

    Thank you I will try this! Do you have any advice for a dog who was raised on a farm and never socialized? We live in a small city and my dog is terrified of everything. Refuses to walk unless it's toward home, scared of the leash, scared of noises, etc. Basically everything outside!

    We are long term fostering a dog at the moment, he doesn't seem to be afraid of going near the leash, but gets very aggressive when trying to put it on him. Will growl, bite, and lunge towards us, the actively go to find and bite us. He does this behaviour woth other things top not just his leash. He gets jelious of us hugging anyone, he is aggressive and anxious to other dogs on walks... Other times he's sweet as pie and wants cuddles and strokes. We feel like prisoners in our own home.

    • @raisingyourpetsnaturally
      @raisingyourpetsnaturally  Рік тому

      Yikes. You really should seek a professional to work with you one on one. A veterinarian behaviorist is what I would recommend.

    It’s hard to relate our situation to the video because your spaniel seems to have no issues whatsoever with the leash and harness. Our rescued toy Aussie doodle is extremely fearful of the leash and loses all appetite for treats when we touch the leash. It’s often left out in the vicinity of the dog and us so he ignores it except when we touch it. He freaks out when we finally get it on him, jumping and biting at it.

    • @raisingyourpetsnaturally

      Dexter has 0 issues with his leash and harness. However, as a dog trainer who works with a lot of rescued dogs, my video should be helpful to you. I hope you watched it to the end on how to slowly desensitize and counter condition your dog. Remember, the key is to start at the point where your dog is comfortable. That might be reaching towards the leash, then tossing the meat treat. Good luck.

    Any tips if your dog isn’t treat motivated?

    • @raisingyourpetsnaturally
      @raisingyourpetsnaturally  Рік тому

      I would double check a few things. 1-no free feeding (bowls of food left on the ground) 2- single ingredient treat (nothing else) such as chicken heart, beef, rabbit, etc. 3- cooked meat, warm and smelly. You can use toys, but it can be hard. Good luck.

    We have a puppy and tight outside the gate we put the harness on and left it on because of potty training and getting him outside fast before an accident happens. Now, getting the harness and leash on is a power struggle.

    This kind of conditioning approach will take days of several sessions I assume. Then the question is how to walk the do in the interim. Leaving the dog at home without going out would lead to other issues

    • @raisingyourpetsnaturally
      @raisingyourpetsnaturally  Рік тому +2

      It will. Unfortunately, behavior and training don't always have a fast route. It's important to practice these lessons a variety of times a day to work through them as quickly as possible. Also, ensure you are addressing any other underlying anxiety. If you can treat or feed a licky mat while attaching the leash, that would work. If not, I would suggest contacting a local trainer to help with the anxiety. Good luck.

    My dog started barking/whimpering like she was uncomfortable when she saw the leash in my hand. Do I continue with this method anyways when she does that? Or do I leave it for a while and do it again later?

    • @leaadelaide2206
      @leaadelaide2206 Рік тому +1

      She doesn’t like it when its on, but after a while she starts trotting so sweetly on our walks and forgets about it. She’s only a year old if that matters

    • @raisingyourpetsnaturally
      @raisingyourpetsnaturally  Рік тому

      Do more of the leash is on the ground, in your hand work, back off to no reaction and start there.
