Me too as a kid he had the look the slick curly hair i remember they were teasing a face turn during the early 90s the fans were behind him during his match with Hercules
Like most legit tough guys, Barbarian seems very chill and humble. Aside from a couple times on WWF 80s interviews, this is the first time hearing Barb talk.
Those island guys, what legit tough people. It amazes me how Barbarian,Haku/Meng and other wrestlers who seemed like monsters who would eat your kids are very soft spoken and laid back. He and Warlord were my favorite heels and I thought the feud with Road Warriors/LOD was epic. Ahh the memories. Great interview. Thanks!
I live in Vegas and most of my friends a are Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. I'm 6'2 250lbs and compared to them I'd be the runt o da litter. Yet all but one is the most soft spoken guy, always calm and laughing...until they're not. It takes a lot to get them to the NOT but once they do its a scary sight.
Love the Barbarian! I remember him as Konga the Barbarian in Paul Jones' Army. Flying headbutt off the ropes was awesome. Also remember him whipping guys into the ropes and drilling them in the face with his boot. Power personified. Saw him wrestle Sam Houston at The Forum in Los Angeles in 1986. Very underrated. One of my all-time favorites. Thank you Hannibal!
Yeah that is pretty scary. I saw Warlord as a kid and I'm pushing 40 years old now and I'm STILL terrified of the guy when I watch old 80s wrestling tapes. If I saw THAT MAN being scared of something, I'm running for the hills, because whatever can spook that behemoth has gotta be something I want absolutely no part of!
@@champtouch3298 Happy early birthday, bro! I just turned 40 last week and thought it was the end of my life. But it ain't so bad; you'll just wake up in the morning and you're there! And you've still got a bunch of priceless pro wrasslin memories to re-visit here on UA-cam, so I'm good and happy to be alive in these wondrous times! Happy trails, my man!
The nose biting incident happened on June 26th 1988 at the Safari Club in Baltimore. The name of the poor chap who got his nose bitten off is Warren Brent Cooper. Haku was sued for $1.1 million and lost a lot of money. It's in the news, look for it. It happened just weeks after Haku was coronated as King Haku in WWE, and unfortunately the incident ended his push.
Wow, this is the first time I ever heard Barbarian speak! I first saw him when JCP first started airing here in Philly back in late 1984 when he was managed by Paul Jones and eh was a killer - especially with his amazing diving headbutt across the ring!
That big man doing the diving headbutt from the top was a definitely sight to behold! This is the first time I've ever heard Barb speak, too! Have to add one of my favorite Barbarian-related memories is when Heenan was talking about him during his epic commentary in the '92 Royal Rumble where Flair wins the title. Gorilla Monsoon wonders if Barb could be an ally to Flair in the Rumble because of Barb's past association with Heenan, and Heenan goes: "he doesn't like anybody --- I used to manage him and barely liked me! Why do you think they call him 'The Barbarian'?! He's not a hair dresser on his day off!" Barb didn't talk much, but man that guy was a BEAST in the ring. Him and Haku could've legit run through that entire locker room if they wanted to!
So there were 30-35 wrestlers drinking beer at the bar that night. No wonder so many wrestlers claimed to have witnessed Haku biting that guy's nose off
YOU NEVER...EVER MESS WITH SAMOANS AND/OR TONGANS...MAINLAND PEOPLE PLEASE REMEMBER THIS!!...They epitomize the word "TOUGH"..and when pissed "FRIGHTENING"
If someone who's regarded by his peers as the toughest man around gives you two chances to stay away and you still don't....then you fully deserve whatever is coming your way. That's a Jedi level of stupidity.
I never knew the Barbarian had such a strong accent when speaking English. Haku, and the Barbarian are from the Island of Tonga,, I believe. I heard Haku speak before, he doesn't have such a strong accent when speaking English. Both Haku and the Barbarian are tough underrated wrestlers. I enjoyed watching them both compete.
And to think, almost everyone believes Barbarian is right up there in toughness, just behind Haku.. He's a very strong, fearless guy himself, I can't believe what Haku was in real life, in his prime.. Shit, I wouldn't even dare to mess with him!!
Good job Devon!👊 I remember back in the day when this guy was in his prime! I saw him Wrestle several times back in the late 80's or early 90's, this guy was a freakin Beast! I remember when he was in the NWA, and watching Barbarian in a bench press competition against Animal of the Road Warriors! Barbarian and Animal both were bench pressing 450lbs like it was nothing, they made it look easy!! Thanks Devon, I enjoyed watching it!! Keep em coming Brother!!👍
I know this is an old interview but I have so much respect for Haku the king and the Barbarian I loved watching their tag team matches they were so big and so flexible and so strong unbelievable men back then compared to now
The four people I would NEVER want to be facing down in a bar, back in their prime: 1. Haku 2. Paul Orndorff 3. Tommy Billington 4. New Jack or Randy Savage (tie)
If you told me you'd give me a million dollars to identify this wrestler I would not be able to identify the Barbarian as he looks right now. Man he looks WAY different! This Haku story ALWAYS reminds me of the Chris Farley character in Dirty Work. LOL!
Well, Haku gave that tough guy not one but two chances to leave and save face. First time, the guy could have walked off and told his buddies how the so-called toughest guy in the room wanted nothing to do with him. And technically he would have been telling the truth. But, he kept pushing.
I’m guessing idiot fans thought that because they watched Haku often job-out on TV, that they could ‘job him out’ themselves, and obviously / clearly, that’s just not the case. Ain’t gonna happen!
Wrong. As you heard Barb say, the guy heard haku was the toughest. He just wanted to challenge the toughest guy. Just like many loud mouths challenged Andre. They thought they could make their local rep by beating up the biggest or toughest “fake” wrestler. Morons being morons….
It's really amazing how The Barbarian has changed considerably over the years. I can tell that he lost a lot of weight. He no longer weighs about 280 lbs. which was his average weight when he was active in the WWF (now WWE). But be that as it may, a lot of people didn't seem to realize that you just don't mess with Haku in his prime. Even the 7'4" 550 lb Andre The Giant was scared of him. There was another incident (also at the bar) wherein Haku tried to quell an argument between a lady and a guy (presumably her boyfriend). A bouncer (likely an employee of that bar) grabbed a stool and smashed it onto Haku. That only enraged Haku. He ended up hurting a few people afterwards. The owner of that bar had to call the police because Haku was unstoppable. No one had dared to intervene and reason with him at that point.
He can try be nice and told the guy leave him alone. The guy keep comeing back and pushing him. He had no choice to hurt the guy. It the guy fault you got hurt. Now the guy should learn his lesson that do try push people into a fight. Learn his lesson don't push people into a fight. When people say leave them alone. Then leave people alone.
MUCH OFA TO THE BARBARIAN 🇹🇴 ONE OF TONGA / POLYNESIA’s BEST TO STEP FOOT INTO THE SQUARED CIRCLE. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Haku is right’ , never interrupt a Polynesian while eating lol
@Hannibal TV Maybe you can shed some light. Any truth to the rumor that Haku was invited to participate in first UFC event only to be quashed by the power's that be for fear of possibly hurting Wrestling's tough guy legacy?
Haku was working for WCW at that time making far more money than UFC was paying. Also his legend has only really become huge over the past decade or so with so many shoots bring out free in the net now as well as Podcasts being hugely popular.
Not related but came from the same island and they knew each other. Barbarian is several years older and got sent to Japan to learn sumo shortly after Haku.
Loved how he described Warlord saying "Barb, I'm a big man and I was never scared of anything but now I'm scared"
Barbarian and Warlord were "The Powers of Pain"
I always loved the Barbarian. He was a big strong guy that could move like a small man. He should have been a lot more popular than he was.
Me too as a kid he had the look the slick curly hair i remember they were teasing a face turn during the early 90s the fans were behind him during his match with Hercules
@@krlm2280 I actually just watched that match last month. 😄 You're right the fans were rooting for him.

i suppose all the wrestlers can speak, while in character in the business i don't think they were suppose to then !
Tough guys don't need to act tough or intimidate. The quiet ones are usually the deadliest.
Haku was being a gentlemen.. some people are just that stupid.
These stories of Haku from other wrestlers telling them are so intriguing i think there should be a book on Haku's career and bar stories
Haku was my first boss at a Toyota dealer washing cars
Such an amazing guy I love Tonga

Met Barbarian a few years ago at a wrestling convention. He was so nice.
