  • Conic sections are the curves obtained when a plane cuts (sections) a cone making an angle with respect to the axis. Since these curves are obtained by a section plane the curves are planar curves. This video explains what are conic sections used in engineering drawing and how to obtain them. Ellipse, parabola and hyperbola are the conic sections. Circle is also a conic section, however, circle can be considered a special case of ellipse. These conic sections are the most used curves in engineering for making many components. These are planar curves, that is, they occur on a plane (2D) rather than in a 3D space.
