In 2008, a historic event took place: The New York Philharmonic, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Lorin Maazel (1930-2014) traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea to perform a concert at East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. It was the first time since the Korean War that significant US-American cultural representatives were permitted to visit the secluded country. This event captures a historic moment in which music found itself navigating sensitive political realities, and revealed its unique power - the power to awaken human minds and to push for change by creating moments of communication, unity, and hope.
The New York Philharmonic began the concert by performing the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, followed by a program that introduced the audience to European and US-American classics (such as Richard Wagner, George Bizet or Leonard Bernstein), and created moments of symbolic meaning: After performing pieces such as Antonín Dvořák's Symphony "From the New World" and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris", the orchestra closed the concert with the famous Korean folk song "Arirang", which is beloved in both, South and North Korea.
    Directed by Michael Beyer
    Produced by Paul Smaczny

I was just listening to Maazel’s The Ring version when I just saw this releasing ! It’s from the historic musical moment in North Korea, 2008.

Love the piece but it is a disgrace to be performing in North Korea.

Yes it is. They're playing for a bunch of regime prominents in a murderous dictatorship.

The N.Y. Philharmonic Concerts in North Korea were arranged by the U.S. State Department. Classical music orchestras have often been used in diplomacy.

Why not bring something beautiful to those people? They're not to blame for their oppressive government.

The Japanese have always had such great taste in music.
They even simply loved the rock band Kansas’ rendition of Lohengrin, which they performed to open their shows in the early 1980’s

This took place in Pyongyang, North Korea in 2008. It was a combo of Koreans and Americans in the audience.
