  • It’s pretty wild to think that the GOAT himself, Ricky Carmichael-a multi-time Supercross and Motocross champion-used to work on his own bike. That’s right, Ricky was his own practice bike mechanic! How crazy is that? Watch this video and find out how Ricky thinks working on your own bike can actually give you an advantage as a racer.

"do you think they know how to do torque wrench?" After hearing that statement I'm not too convinced that Ricky knows how to tighten his own chain

When i was racing as an amatuer locally we would fully rebuild our 125 every year. First piston and ring job i did was at age 13 on my own race bike. Shame that level of involvement is gone. It helps you understand the bike, what to change setup wise and what it will affect, better when you know how it works inside and out.

In the 70's, we had the air-cooled bikes on such a razor edge, we rebuilt the top end once a week. And crazy enough, sometimes between motos.

That is so wild, I could take my bikes down to the frame and put them back together in about an hour by the time I was a tweenager, now in my 30s with power tools, I can take an engine out so fast I don't even bother rebuilding a top end with it in the chassis, its faster for me to just pull it and put it on my bench. Always wanted to be a factory mechanic but ended up an oil and gas engineer instead.

I don't race just ride in the woods. I'm amazed how many people can't fix their machines. They are pretty easy to work on. I bought my first dike bike at 51. At 53 now I can do suspension work, pistons, bearings, and pretty much anything on the bike. I have fun and I'm learning each time.

I also bought my first dyke at 50. She keeps saying “no I’m not that kinda dude”.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Ok, I’ll buy us a beer, I owe ya!

Since he brought up Schumacher, Nikki Luada knew everything about his cars and told Enzio his car was shit (Luada was asked if that was true in an interview and he said yes) and knew what to do to fix it. When he owned his airline company and one of them crashed he was right in the middle of the investigation helping find the cause until it was solved not SX related but a good example of being able to engineer and turn a wrench. I believe these kids coming up just ride the bike and dad or their mechanic does everything.

Ricky is in a good position to fix this going forward. Should introduce a mechanical knowledge program in the amateur ranks. At all the races there should be sessions for the kids to learn. Also include a class or two at Loretta's where riders must maintain their own bike for the week.

It’s funny, because if you were to go out to the pits at an offroad race GNCC, Enduros, HareScramble or whatever and nearly every guy, factory rider or not could work on their own bikes.

When I had a shop and local race team I was the one rebuilding 4-5 bikes a week for the pros we had riding our bikes lol but I also rebuilt my yz 80 every other week when I was younger lol my dad helped with my xr100 before that and snowmobiles. But after xr100 I worked on all my stuff and my buddies and it wasn’t till I was in my late 20s I started really understanding things in a much different way. I still like talking g to ppl about things already know how to do just because they may know a lil trick or something I didn’t do or made it that much faster for me

Bike setup 20 years ago made a much bigger difference then now where basic power mods and suspension work done can make any bike win with the right rider….bikes have evolved significantly though still similar but take any ex racer guy from 10 - 20 years ago and they always amazed at how good the bikes are stock!

nowadays every major team has to justify the salary of suspension guys, motor guys, chassis guys, engineer guys, etc/etc. Too many cooks in the kitchen. its like playing telephone with a motorcycle, things get diluted the more often it gets passed around.

Do you think any of these kids can rebuild and engine? Even a 2 stroke, I don't think there is a single factory rider right now that knows how. By the time I was on an 80 I knew what size every single bolt was on the bike, I pulled the bike out of the crate and put it together and checked every single accessible bolt before I started it. I knew how to tighten my chain, adjust suspension when I was on a 60, but I wanted to know so that I could make sure my bike was maintained properly, even when I raced pro nationals nobody touched my bike without me looking it over after, even rebuilt the top end at an amateur national between motos one year.

I’m Gen Z and it is true we have grown to be Lazy on Bike Setup and Maintenance. We’re just too focused on the riding aspect as we want to ride like the top guys.
It was a hindrance to me as i just got into riding at 14, trying to catch up and worked on technique mostly. Thankful for MxFactory and AJ Cat.
My Oldest Brother would “Help” me but he just showed me how to do a routine of maintenance. It didn’t help not having a father either but I’m still trying to learn.
Gen Z has the Technique and the adaptability on any bike, but most of us lack bike Knowledge and settings.
Of course there will be some guys who were fortunate to be in their garages all the time and have their dad’s assistance over the years and can do all that themselves.
As far as bike Maintenance i did was putting on Handgaurds, switching out Brake/Clutch Levers, and Clean my chain (have yet to learn how to tighten it).
Our Problem is we want everything perfect as the way we do it rather than just momentum.
It was very satisfying and rewarding getting those levers and Handguards in.
I wish I had watched more videos on bike maintenance prior than towards Technique.

I agree if they took more of an interest in the mechanics of the bike, they'd be better riders. On sort of a related topic, I can't believe how many times I've been at races and youd see kids just dump there bikes and walk away. Drives my mechanical sympathy nuts
