I love when fighters grapple and clinch for dominate positions and/or escape from perilous situation using their wrestling its just as exciting for me seeing a submission attempt for as it is seeing a haymaker that almost landed. That said what Usman did was the boxing equivalent of scoring for points and nothing else. He wasn't a good enough wrestler to do anything other then pin Masvidal against the fence. He isn't near a good enough standing up that was clear every exchange was him throwing one-two combinations and ducking away the minute Masivdal tried to get in flow. Honestly its more like he survived Jorge Masvidal then beat him. Its one thing when your an up and comer and your trying to win that bread and fame and you do that to a guy like Tyron Woodley. Its another thing ENTIRELY if you do that as a champion on one of the biggest PPVs in a while you've guaranteed nobodies going to be tuning in to your fights. I know this is eating dana up its one of the reason he didn't like Tyron because he was also known for being "boring".
I'm with you 100% on this man, every last word. Exactly what I've been saying. I rewatched some of GSP's older fights recently, and watching GSP's wrestling was just as exciting and awe-inspiring as any stand-up striking match. The sheer ease and fluidity of GSP's transitions, how every time his opponent made the slightest gain in position, GSP would just immediately move through this sequence of movements and within 20 seconds he's completely obliterated his opponent's ability to do anything all over again. All Usman did was shove Masvidal into the fence and pin him there so that nothing could happen. He was very deliberate about using just enough toe stomps and shoulder bumps to prevent the ref breaking them up, but honestly, if he wasn't forced to do that to keep the ref from intervening, I'm certain he would've just stood there not even moving. The problem is the rules favour grapplers too much. Makes me laugh when someone says “well in a street fight there’s no ref to pull you off”. Yeah well in a street fight if you sit in someone’s “guard” you’re getting kicked in the face or your head is gonna get elbowed to hell if you’re up against a wall holding their legs but that’s not allowed in MMA.
This fight wasn't that bad, I think the audience just wanted to see a slugfest or boxing. Usman fought smart using wrestling and takedowns. Took away masvidals stand up. I was surprised with masvidals wrestling defense tho, pretty good.
They wanted to see a fight, simple. The reason people love mma is its the closest thing to a street fight and in no street fight does anyone just try to take dominant position unless they are trying to not be in a fight

I love when fighters grapple and clinch for dominate positions and/or escape from perilous situation using their wrestling its just as exciting for me seeing a submission attempt for as it is seeing a haymaker that almost landed. That said what Usman did was the boxing equivalent of scoring for points and nothing else. He wasn't a good enough wrestler to do anything other then pin Masvidal against the fence. He isn't near a good enough standing up that was clear every exchange was him throwing one-two combinations and ducking away the minute Masivdal tried to get in flow. Honestly its more like he survived Jorge Masvidal then beat him. Its one thing when your an up and comer and your trying to win that bread and fame and you do that to a guy like Tyron Woodley. Its another thing ENTIRELY if you do that as a champion on one of the biggest PPVs in a while you've guaranteed nobodies going to be tuning in to your fights. I know this is eating dana up its one of the reason he didn't like Tyron because he was also known for being "boring".

I'm with you 100% on this man, every last word. Exactly what I've been saying. I rewatched some of GSP's older fights recently, and watching GSP's wrestling was just as exciting and awe-inspiring as any stand-up striking match. The sheer ease and fluidity of GSP's transitions, how every time his opponent made the slightest gain in position, GSP would just immediately move through this sequence of movements and within 20 seconds he's completely obliterated his opponent's ability to do anything all over again.
All Usman did was shove Masvidal into the fence and pin him there so that nothing could happen. He was very deliberate about using just enough toe stomps and shoulder bumps to prevent the ref breaking them up, but honestly, if he wasn't forced to do that to keep the ref from intervening, I'm certain he would've just stood there not even moving. If he could've pinned Masvidal against the cage and just stood there without moving for 25 minutes, I'm positive he would've done that.

The problem is the rules favour grapplers too much. Makes me laugh when someone says “well in a street fight there’s no ref to pull you off”. Yeah well in a street fight if you sit in someone’s “guard” you’re getting kicked in the face or your head is gonna get elbowed to hell if you’re up against a wall holding their legs but that’s not allowed in MMA.

This fight wasn't that bad, I think the audience just wanted to see a slugfest or boxing. Usman fought smart using wrestling and takedowns. Took away masvidals stand up. I was surprised with masvidals wrestling defense tho, pretty good.
no it was bad. Wrestling fights for "dominance" shouldn't be given points(at least to the level they are) when they move the fight away from a finish.

They wanted to see a fight, simple. The reason people love mma is its the closest thing to a street fight and in no street fight does anyone just try to take dominant position unless they are trying to not be in a fight
