Rich Brook I totally agree with your notion. If the U.S. helped Vietnam gain their independence and make them an ally, it would benefit the U.S. exponentially in Southeast Asia against a growing China. Now look at how hostile China has become; they are claiming all of the China seas and stealing land that doesn't belong to them. Sooner or later when they become the number one economy, they will quadruple it of the U.S. with the the size of their population.

The US ambassador was not the "last american" evacuated from Vietnam. He was evacuated few hours before the last helicopter. The marines had direct order from president to arrest him if he refused being evacuated as he was not happy with the american withdrawal from Vietnam. The last americans evacuated were (understandably) the marines who kept order during the evacuation process and eventually barricaded themselves on the roof of the embassy waiting for the last helicopter. As they were being taken away, they could see NVA tanks and trucks entering the city.

I lived in Ho Chi Minh City as a teacher on a couple of occasions, and the spirit of optimism and the unbelievable growth and development throughout Viet Nam never ceased to astonish me. All this could have happened decades earlier, if the Paris treaty had been adhered to and not betrayed, i.e. if the North had been allowed to win in 1954. All the USA and its sub-nations did was draw out the struggle far longer than it should have.

"Epic coverage" is the phrase that comes to mind. I love the way Gall talks, valiant with his back turned toward the NVA tanks, and I've watched this many, many times, for it seems to me that (besides getting it just right) this kind of journalistic coverage itself with its "fit-to-print" rhetoric is something lost with people like Sandy Gall or the great Alistair Cooke. There is fantastic journalism out there today, mind you, but this quality of being leaned men abroad is something lost in a globalised world. BTW, I recommend reading Gall on Afghanistan, he writes just the way he talks: very astute, relentless, and yet empathetic.

    • @Krachmaschinchen

You're absolutely right, Dusty. I was only talking about the high-brow rhetoric, which seems quaint now, because it sounds if these gentlemen reporters had just briefly left the drawing room to report on the calamities among the heathens, never really fearing for their lives even when in harm's way. As the US withdrew their troops from South-Vietnam along with economical support, North-Vietnam was strengthened through recieving increased support in the form of: weapons, ammunition, tanks, artillery, etc.
Nixon forced South-Vietnam to sign the peace treaty so he could withdraw all forces from South-Vietnam for a "good" reason; because it was "peace" and thus no need for american support, he new the treaty would not be honored by the NLF but he needed an excuse to withdraw all forces.

Osley Sallent first, no soviets and chinese allow to go South. Second they do not decide the war and political movement like what US do to thier puppet government in SVN. Even in the end of war when US shake hand with China (ironic they said they fight to prevent the communist then they support huge communist country in the end) China tries to divide VN but VNese leaders said no. Because VNese leaders is independent mind so China support Cambodia and invade VN in 1979. 3rd Most of VNese support HCM and want to be united and independent, because of that they can win that war even they don't have so much aid like SVN got.

Well, you're right , China and Soviet's support was very important. Everyone known that but without determination, tenacity, brilliant leadership, resourcefulness, solidarity of our people, support of people around the world, there would be no 30-4-1975. A success is a combination of many factors, not just one. Moreover, China had its own reasons for supporting Vietnam, like Korean War. Also, China was responsible for a divided Vietnam after 1954 as they didn't want Vietnam to be totally unified

When my uncle came back from work in Saigon one day, the South Vietnamese army had burnt down his farm, and raped his wife, "Aiding the Vietminh", is what they excused their actions for, even though he had promised his son to stay neutral in the conflict, it was a pack of lies. Then the Vietminh showed up a week later asking for his help, what do you think he did? he armed up and joined them, let his family flee here to the UK. He said joining the VC was the best decision of his life.

If the war can simply be explained away by concepts like "self-hating" or "weaknesses," we have lost our history, our responsibility to use the past to learn from its mistakes and to help create a better world. The distance between My Lai and Abu Ghraib, as we have seen, is not as great as it might seem.

This is still heartbreaking to watch. RVN was totally betrayed by American politicians. American and ARVN/TQLC forces were fighting with their hands tied, yet prevailed repeatedly on the battlefield.
Not sure whether it was a war the U.S. needed to get involved in, but once they were involved, their government never really gave them a chance to ultimately defeat the Commies.
    Disgraceful.

3:29 the climax of the musical MISS SAIGON, when Chris and the remaining GIs join the ambassador on the last helicopter on the roof of the embassy, inadvertently leaving behind his Vietnamese girlfriend, who'd been one of the thousands locked outside the embassy walls. Such a great but sad moment in theater. I remember how awestruck I was the first time I saw the helicopter come down from the rafters onto the stage. This clip is giving me chills, too, because it's the real deal.

It only underlined the fact that Saigon regime was always too weak, too corrupted and whole system backed by US taxpayers money. It's better to left that rotten building collapse. The whole war was total American disaster and run by American cold war ideas. In long run Vietnam would have in any case choose mixed system - partly communist but mostly free market system just like Vietnam is now. The war was unnecessary and you can only blame Washington war hawks of it.

The constitution and the court system is a copy-paste of the US's. Although puppet is a different ideology. Being dependent means that if the US decided a point in time to leave its partner SK. SK would get butt fucked.
Puppet is a direct involvement in a government system, and it is not apparent in anyways in my comment that i have said so. Thus not pissing off an Korean.

On Vietnam Victory Day I offer this poem about the war
"To Whom It May Concern" by Adrian Mitchell (1965):
I was run over by the truth one day
Ever since the accident I've walked this way
So stick my legs in plaster
    Tell me lies about Vietnam
Heard the alarm clock screaming with pain
Couldn't find myself so I went back to sleep again
So fill my ears with silver, stick my legs in plaster
    Tell Me lies about Vietnam
Every time I shut my eyes all I see is flames
I made a marble phone book, carved all their names
So coat my eyes with butter, fill my ears with silver, stick my legs in plaster
    Tell me lies about Vietnam
I smell something burning, hope its just my brains
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy chains
So stuff my nose with garlic, coat my eyes with butter, fill my ears with silver, stick my legs in plaster
    Tell me lies about Vietnam
Where were you at the time of the crime?
Down by the cenotaph, drinking slime
So chain my tongue with whisky, stuff my nose with garlic, coat my eyes
with butter, fill my ears with silver, stick my legs in plaster
    Tell me lies about Vietnam
You put your bombers in, you put your conscience out
You take the human being and you twist it all about
So scrub my skin with women, chain my tongue with whisky, stuff my nose
with garlic, coat my eyes with butter, fill my ears with silver, stick
    my legs in plaster...
    TELL ME LIES ABOUT VIETNAM
