Big ups to Martika, or Marta Marrero, who played 'Gloria' on the show. She had a huge hit in the 80's with the song Toy Soldier. While widely considered a "one hit wonder," you couldn't escape this song in the late 80's. She too deserves to be mentioned along side the other success stories of the show.

I still watch my favorite episodes of Kids Inc to this day...It takes me back to my childhood. I remember having the biggest fan crush on Martika (Gloria). Her voice was amazing, her acting was on another level from the other kids and the camera loved her....I was so excited when her first single 'More Than You Know' debuted at the start of her solo career...but sadly I think Prince getting involved in her music messed everything up for her...She didn't need him or his help in my opinion. Sad that her attempts to make it back into the mainstream a few years back didn't work out..I'm just happy knowing that we will always be able to look back at her unmatched talent and potential as a benchmark for what a natural born superstar really looks like ...Love you Martika ♥️...and great vid Cristy. Love to know there's more KI fans out there that love the show as much as me 👋🥰

Thank you for this! I went to Elementary school with Renee. I met her when I was in the 5th grade and she was in the 4th. She and I had lunch together a few times. I didn’t know she sang until she performed “White Christmas” at our school’s talent show. Then one Sunday morning, I decided to watch this new show, Kids, Inc. I was so surprised when I saw Renee! I had to move and changed schools soon after and never saw Renee again. I have wondered over the years what had happened to her, and I’m so happy to see some updates. The main thing I always remembered about her was how sweet she was. I was considered the geek and had no friends. I had just come out of foster care and was trying to get used to being home with my family and was way too shy and embarrassed about my family life to talk to anyone. I was at the school for less than half the year, and she was the only one who ever ate lunch with me. I would have remembered her fondly, even if she hadn’t become famous.

Great piece! I remember the first two seasons - 84 and 85. My family didn’t have cable so when it went to Disney Channel, I couldn’t watch it anymore. I still have the original albums, one autographed by each member of the original cast when I met them at an event in Sherman Oaks, CA where they appeared and signed their records which would have been 1984.

  • @CamdenBloke
    @CamdenBloke Рік тому +2

I used to watch this in grade school when it was originally on. It was on right before Mickey Mouse Club on The Disney Channel. MMC was actually my favourite of the two, but I really liked this one as well (sort of like how Seinfeld was on right before Friends, and Seinfeld was my favourite, but Friends was also very good.
By the time I got to be around 5th grade or so, I was starting to feel a little too old for the show (the plots felt simplistic and childish) but I kept watching a bit longer because 'Love Hewitt' joined the cast and I had the *biggest* crush on her. I stopped watching both shows by the time I got to middle school, though. So I wouldn't have seen anything 1992-onward.
This analysis is a lot more detailed than I thought of when I used to watch it - 5 songs with 1 original song, 3 on stage, etc. I didn't really know anything about popular music when I was that age, so as far as I was concerned, they may as well have all been original songs.

OMG! I've been in broadcasting for 26 years and I have never seen such a professional and watchable video on youtube. You kept my attention for the full 23 minutes! I watched the entire show. I have not a single critique and THAT is amazing! I have to admit, I'm jealous! Your narration, your research, your cutaways... All perfect. How many people did you have in the production of this video?
What I'm trying to say is, "great job." I loved it. And I learned a lot. I am going to have to ask you for some pointers.

Thank you so, so much Jeff! What an awesome comment to find under this video. I really appreciate the kind words, especially with someone who’s been in the business for so long! I will say the secret sauce here was a disproportionate passion for Kids Incorporated which fueled me through a lot of the creation of this video. It took me about 2 months to get it conceptualized, getting the materials needed, shooting, and editing it together. I’d say it became much easier when I was in the research phase and started uncovering bits and pieces of Kids Inc history through actual content (videos, podcasts, interviews). That allowed me to piece and segment the video way easier than just having a talk track with a weak foundation. Once I outlined the script, it was just a matter of getting it through the assembly line! I’m sure if I had a team I could’ve done it a little faster, but I honestly enjoyed every step of the way. Happy to answer any questions you may have! Feel free to email me at craycristy@gmail.com if there's anything in particular you'd like pointers on 🙌 Thanks again for watching and for your kind comment!

I don't remember much about the series, probably because I didn't watch it constantly, but I do remember it being on the air. I'm familiar with at least some of the celebrities, like Martika and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Also, I don't remember it being exactly like Glee, especially since Glee was more controversial. I think Kids, Inc. was cleaner than Glee.
I wish I could remember more of it, though, like characters and plot lines, and the other actors from the show. I know what some of the original cast has been doing; for instance, I know that Jennifer has been making a lot of Hallmark Channel movies, mostly for the holidays.
Thanks for making this video, though. You seem to remember it better than I do, which means I'm old lol!

I found your video to be very informative and interesting! I'm a long-time Kids Inc. fan, and my favorite seasons were 2-4. I thought the show was the best before Martika left, but it was still good that one season she was gone... then I didn't care much for it once Renee and Rahsaan left. I quit watching it when Stacy left, as I couldn't really get into it then, but I still love those first few seasons!
Just a few comments from your video: You may know this already, but speaking of Martika, did you know that Stacy, Renee, and Rahsaan (and also Devyn) sang background vocals on the single Toy Soldiers? And then Rahsaan did backing vocals on a few other songs on that album.
It is true that Stacy and Ryan had a "thing" going during the show. I haven't actually seen or heard anything official from them, but I've heard it from more than one person, and there's a picture circulating around Facebook of them at Disneyland, and they're either holding hands, or he has his arm around her (can't remember which). I also found this old Kids Inc. Fan Club video here on UA-cam, and it's a video Stacy took of herself at her house, and Ryan can be seen hanging out at her place in that video, though none of the other Kids Inc. kids are there. I can find the link to that, if you want; just let me know!
Along the same lines of Stacy and romance, her first kiss was Mario Lopez! She actually states this on a talk show. I can post you the link for that as well, if you want.
I highly recommend listening to the Kids Inc. Podcast, if you haven't started listening to it already. Tom Lynch was interviewed, as well as various other cast members. I haven't listened to the entire thing yet (new episodes are still being posted weekly, actually), but Jerry and Moosie are also interviewed, and there may be more I haven't listened to yet. But if you want to get the actual scoop on things, that would be where to get it, as these are actual memories from people who worked on the show over the years.

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment! I wish I had come across the podcast before recording this video; it's so good! I'm almost done with listening through all the episodes.
YES! I found that that video; it was for Ryan's birthday or something. I wanted this video to be more objective and factual as a first take, but I might actually do one with more of the Behind The Scenes and things that people may not know since I'm uncovering so much now. All of the videos you're mentioning would be great! If they're handy of course.

I have never seen any of your videos, but when I saw that this was a video on Kids Incorporated, I had to tune in! When I heard you say that you grew up watching the show I did a double take because I watched it whenever I could & was eleven by the last season and I know we're not the same age. I think it's awesome that your parents thought ahead and taped the show for you to watch later! I wish that I had been able to see more of the show, my family didn't really get cable until the time where it was just MMC playing but even though I like both, I think I have always preferred Kids Inc. Thank-you for this trip down memory lane and if you can find more content to make a part 2 then I will definitely check it out!

I grew up on this more so than MMC. It was wild to see so many from both shows just continue on being famous and successful on a legit huge level... Timberlake, Spears, Fergie, Aguilera, Lopez, Hewitt, Chasez, Gosling. Every single one of them were A listers in their time after their respective shows. You won't ever see it like that again where child stars progress on for literal decades to this magnitude from just two shows.

I watched the show in its entirety from the beginning off and on because I had younger sisters who watched but I wasn’t the target age group! I was already 17 in 1989 and in high school when it first aired on Disney! But I was always a fan of Martika and Fergie! Fergie was so cut as a little kid! And I loved when Martika came out with her ortigal songs in her career! Fun fact: The kids on chorus of her song “Toy Soldiers” are the kids from Kids Incorporated! And I’ve always known that Stacy from the show was Fergie! I still have the soundtrack record from back then that has Martika on it too! I’m talkin’ actual vinyl record!

Hi CrayCristy. So glad you're doing this. I'm a huge fan of Kids Inc. and got to meet JLH and Wild Orchid, and had lunch with Connie Lew. But what was really one of the highlights of my career was auditioning Anastasia Horne for a film that would become D-War. [I didn't last long at that company--not a story worth telling.] I hope to be able to activate the fandom again for my own indie films very soon.

Thanks for this video. When I was 8 to 10, I was obsessed with Stacey, who was a couple of years older than me. She was everything I wanted to be - blonde, talented, pretty, popular.
Then the show stopped airing in Australia, and in the pre internet era I basically forgot about it and developed other musical interests. Tool, Sisters of Mercy, Rammstein...
Then I read somewhere that Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas was the self same Fergie I'd adored as a child. I was like no. Wucking. Fay. Because of the plastic surgery, tan, hair dye etc she looked absolutely nothing like Stacey, and the Black Eyed Peas is not music I'd choose to listen to. It took ages to get my head around.
I'm glad Fergie chose her own path and I hope she's happy, but when I see her singing Gloria at what, 7 years old? I think what an astonishing vocal talent... I kinda wonder what would have happened if she'd perused a solo career, she could have filled a generational gap between Madonna and Lady Gaga.
    Sorry for the ramble.

When I moved to the suburbs ‘89 the kid scene was little quiet even though I live near the schools aka mines being an apartments coming from a house it’s very limited. I grew up where kids were up at the crack of dawn, eating a bowl of cereal get dress go outside and play. Suburbs your hearing crickets so slowly learning now meeting other kids in the apartments units. Suburban an area I go to find the Disney Channel. Lor and behold there’s kids Inc./the Mickey Mouse club been hooked ever since. Had the opportunity to see them in concert when they came to Cleveland MMC. I did not go I was so nervous to meet everybody and I’m hoping to get a get redo. So nice to see another generation enjoy the shows as much as we did.

You know they don't have Kids Inc or MMM on Disney+ bc of music licensing, which is a bummer and a half...just like with SNL the way they cut the musical guests..which they really can't do with MMC and especially Kids Inc and still have a show. I was obsessed with Stacy Ferguson and freaked when I found out about Wild Orchid...and then of course Black Eyed Peas. Kids Inc and MMC were on forever and then the repeats for years, Disney was so much cooler back then! I read an interview with the show creators just recently and they were talking about wanting to reboot the show in a way that fits more with today. I also remember the VHS tapes they had in the 80s!
This video brought back all kinds of memories!
