Bike vs Train along the Upfield line used to be my standard ride home from work. If you were fit you could surf the boom gates from Brunswick Rd to Moreland Rd and save minutes. The last stretch from Anstey was a lung-buster and Coburg was always a bridge too far for me. It won't be quite the same when the path re-opens after LXRP.
This could be a great idea for the tourist railways when they're back in season to get people in - Organise a fun run along the premise of Modern Man vs Steam Train :D

Willison Station was apparently built because of the Riversdale Golf Club members who didn't want to walk to Riversdale (which I find unreasonable since golf isn't a very physically tiring sport, as golf even has golf carts) so Willison was built right next to the venue. The club has since moved to Mount Waverley, so I think the unnecessarily close Willison should shut down.
Riversdale is definitely the station out of those two that gets a lot more patronage. Willison is one of the least used stations on the entire Melbourne metropolitan train network, yet the government sees fit to get rid of both Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Stations and turn them into one station when both of them previously had a decent amount of patronage.

Level Crossing Removal Program. The government likes to focus on how many crossings they have removed and how many to go and how much better it will be for trains and cars. Just wondering on your take of the current situation - as we are a decent way into the project. I haven't been able to find any facts and figures on how things have changed. I imagine people travelling by car would have noticed some improvements already in some areas. Has there been any positive changes yet - eg. number of trains they can run, etc - or is it too soon ? It will be interesting to see how the train system is post covid when everyone is back at work.

And then there's this race - although it was cancelled this year, owing to covid-19. But hopefully it will be back next year. So if you're feeling up to it, get on your bike and check it out. It's a 19km run - well, ride actually - from Castlemaine to Maldon. There are a few trains you can catch from Melbourne to Castlemaine on which you can also take your bike. And when you get to Maldon, they have a couple of trains going back to Castlemaine for both people and Bikes (in the guards van). I have successfully beaten the train between those two stations also, but it was many years ago when my fitness was better and the trains used to crawl across Riversdale Rd at walking speed due to the poor conditions of the tram square. I would be no chance making it now! The great thing about that particular race is that you can use the level crossing to your advantage as the crossing is always down due to the train you are racing, so you don't have to wait to cross Riversdale Rd.
Failed to touch off and touch on! Running in the station x 2! Crossed a main road without using the designated crossing that was within 100m! Travelling without your mask! Fines heading your way, Train Man. I note it is 590 metres from train door to train door so I think you have just made the case to abolish one of those stations. If either Surrey Hills or Mont Albert is going to be abolished (and they are 740 metres apart, surely Riversdale will go when Riversdale Road and the railway are grade separated? Clearly don't need them both. (I'm puffed out just watching you.)
The best way to travel without getting your myki money wasted for a little bit is running from a station to a random station. Well, not really a great idea. But can help.

Good effort to make it back onto the train. However, you did NOT swipe off with your Myki when you left Willison Station and you didn't swipe on when you reboarded the train at Riversdale Station. You're in a lot of trouble, young man. Lol
the way myki works is that when you swipe your myki once, you get a 2 hour pass and any other myki taps in those two hours wont take any more money so hes in the clear
I am not an amazing runner that's for sure, but I encourage you to start jogging, hopefully one day, I can do some longer distance races. Both the Stony Point and Mornington Lines should be done over the summer :)

I have grown up loving trains myself - got my first Tomy Thomas train set at 2 1/2 years old and grew an extensive collection that I entered in several WA Model Railway shows (not proper model trains, but was a hit with kids my own age at the time!!) and spent hours creating different layouts in my bedroom. From very young, I had memorised all the train stations on all of Perth's (then) 4 suburban train lines, which I loved to recite to anyone who would care to listen!! Spent just about every birthday riding every conceivable train in WA - Hotham Valley steam train, Bennett Brook Light Railway, Pemberton tramway, miniature trains, the AvonLink to Northam, Australind to Bunbury... every family holiday there was always something train-related we had to do or the inevitable excitement of being near a railway line or seeing a train (my family are SO gracious haha). A family holiday around Australia in 2010 saw more train rides added to the list - Don River Railway (Tasmania), Melbourne Metro's, Sydney double deckers, Brisbane CityTrains, Adelaide tram to Glenelg, Zig Zag @ Lithgow, Balley Hooley @ Port Douglas, QLD and my No. 1 FAVOURITE (you guessed it) Puffing Billy (still my favourite steam train today). I also amazingly won 3 incredible train trips - 1) the inaugural train to Mandurah when the line opened in 2007; 2) x2 gold class tickets on the Indian Pacific in 2009; 3) x2 gold class tickets on the Ghan! Just incredible! I am currently 23 and, as life happens, I now live in a remote town in the north of WA, about 7 hours drive inland from Broome, where I have been working as a Chaplain for 3 years with young Indigenous people, my other passion. Who would have thought someone with such a fetish for trains would end up in a place SO FAR from them, with my nearest railway at least 9 hours drive away at Katherine in the NT! However, I love exploring the huge world of UA-cam for train videos in my spare time and have become obsessed with the London Tube this year, which I now know a lot about thanks to Geoff Marshall (wink, wink!) I also love a good train ride whenever I can and definitely plan on doing some more Aussie train journeys in the future. Great to see your work, Max! Keep it up!

I must have missed this one Max, i did plenty of running after trains when i was your age but never to run between stations.
It was a tough gig, but its always great to get out for a jog, it doesn't happen often haha
