  • Simonida Selimović continues her talk series on Roma History in Europe with a harrowing account of "Surviving World War 2" from a Roma perspective.
    For Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day 2020, the House of European History invited Simonida Selimović to deliver a series of talks on the story of her family through key moments of European history.
    Originally planned as part of a physical tour in the museum exhibition, but cancelled due to the pandemic, Simonida speaks from home during the lockdown period, on the fate of Roma people and their significance for Europe.
    Simonida was born in Serbia and immigrated as a child together with her family to Austria, where she began her career as an actor. In 2010 she and her sister founded Romano Svato, the first feminist and professional Roma theatre association, as well as activist rap group Mindj Panther Roma Armee Fraktion.
    To plan your visit, and for more information on future events and lectures at the House of European History, subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: historia-europa.ep.eu
    Thanks to Eva Oskarsdottir & Stefan Ecker for the video production.

    As a Jew I feel that all the victims of the Holocaust should be mourned equal. Life is life a crime is a crime.

      Yes , but when? You have the same voice of loss and suffering as every human, every religion, every story of the Holocaust has to be told , documented, like very other story...we must remember all history, religion, of the sufferings of every human? Otherwise what's the point of a one sided history?

      When will they? Isn't every human who suffered, in the Holocaust going to be recognised, every human being?? Every other persons too?? It's not all about religion? It's about everyone who suffered? Is their any Jewish people who suffered as the Gypsy did going to comment, or any family members??

    I am so proud of you for breaking through that wall of silence concerning the Roma genocide by the Nazis! I pray that your people can grow strong and proud of their forebears who endured this criminality! May you know that your history; Roma history, is human history! You matter! You are important and precious!

    Very well spoken. I feel the Holocaust on the Jews is sometimes denied or not spoken about because people hate Israel or have learned antisemitic beliefs. The Porajmos is often not taught specifically but mentioned in a sideline of the Holocaust. (Though in recent years I hear Roma are often mentioned as victims during remembrances). Other genocides like those of the Armenians are even less mentioned, I fear that is a political decision in order to keep the relationships with Turkey good. Education is so important, not only to do the victims right but if we want to lower the chances of such horrific events to happen we need to educate our children again and again about these facts and the mechanisms involved.

    So I’ve always wanted to know my history like where did gypsys come from why do we have our ways and traditions where’s it all come from are we descendants from the Jews of the Middle East because some of our ways are Jewish but we don’t call our selfs Jewish are we from India how do we know genetic testing it’s gonna tell us anything, if hitler didn’t kill so many gypsys maybe we would know our story in America gypsys are extremely different from everywhere else we all stay in the family no one should ever become famous or finish school it’s barbaric but that keeps us spiritually clean and no one no one is allowed to marry anyone who’s not gypsy a “ghadrow or gazho” we keep to our selfs and that’s that we are Catholic now and probably for the past 200 years but no one knows anything before that and of course it’s because gypsys don’t write things down there an extremely uneducated people we are suppressed of course we know one way of life and it’s because of fear but id like to know what started that fear of the outside world the ghadray. We celebrate religious feast days but of Eastern Orthodox dates because most of the gypsys in America did come here from Yugoslavia which is Serbia now and Bulgaria and all that region but this was more in the 1800s

    The number of murdered Jews is also much higher than the Nazi number of 6 million & same with the Roma victims as well.
    According to pre-war census there were 12,500,000 acknowledged Jews in Europe, after the war the number was 225,000.
    Keep in mind that a large number of Jews kept their Judaism hidden back then the real number must be around 20-25 million Jews murdered. Now take that & extrapolate to the Roma most of which were not registered at all.

    • @syppy7416
      @syppy7416 Рік тому

      you sure? I think that might depend on who you count as a Jew

    • @701delbronx8
      @701delbronx8 Рік тому

      That is a false statistic. There were estimated 9.5 million Jews in Europe and the Nazis would have only had access to about 5 million of them
