"In my opinion, there are no alternatives to the idea of collective security and I believe that collective responsibility for security policy, or defence policy, is the best response to the challenges that currently exist in society and in the international system. We received full support from the US in Ukraine's plan to join the MAP and I am sure that we will receive a positive signal in Bucharest, and that's the spirit that we are going there with.''

"Ukraine is the only non-NATO nation supporting every NATO mission. In Afghanistan and in Iraq Ukrainian troops are helping to support young democracies. In Kosovo, Ukrainians are helping keep the peace. Ukraine now seeks to deepen its cooperation with the NATO alliance with the membership action plan. Your nation has made a bold decision and the United States strongly supports your request. In Bucharest this week, I will continue to make America's position clear: we support MAP for Ukraine and Georgia.''

"This is an interesting debate which is taking place but every nation has told me Russia will not have a veto over what happens in Bucharest. I take their word for it, and that's the right policy to have. I am going to work as hard as I can to see to it that Ukraine and Georgia are accepted into MAP. I think it's in our interests as NATO members and I think it's in Ukrainian and Georgian interests as well.''

    STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that he will work "as hard as I can" to help Ukraine join NATO and declared that Russia will not be able to veto former Soviet states joining the trans-Atlantic military alliance.
"Your nation has made a bold decision and the United States strongly supports your request," Bush told Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko after talks at the Presidential Secretariat in Kiev.
Bush praised Ukraine's democratic and military reforms, and noted that Ukraine "is the only non-NATO nation supporting every NATO mission."
Yushchenko said he was confident the summit would further the process.
