I absolutely agree. LingQ is amazing, it doesn't even feel like you are learning. You just sort of begin to understand. Think of it this way, when you are reading a book, an Instagram post or whatever you will EVENTUALLY run into a word in English you don't know e.g. Opaque. You'll look up that word and BOOM that's it, you never need to look it up again. Of course, with LingQ you will have to look up a few things again because learning 1000's of words is a bit different than learning one. However, LingQ is just such a good tool.

Finally found a great app for reading short stories. It has Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic (with vowel signs). Designed for children so beginners can easily understand looking at the pictures. Free with no ads. Amazing!

I wonder . How does it works if we have to click on phrasal verbs ? Try it out for exemple. Or even look up . In that case to click on look and on up doesn't work and don't give a proper translation or definition .

I try to study grammar as little as possible. Instead I stick with comprehensible input and conversation practice to acquire grammar naturally.

What about if you're learning a language that uses different letters, for example Japanese, I don't know any Japanese letter, how can I read a Japanese book?
You will just have to spend some time learning the characters in Japanese outside of the app. However, they do offer very basic readings that are perfect for someone who is just learning how to read.
Actually I’m currently using it for Japanese even though I’ve been studying for 10 years now and know a lot of kanji, the app has a feature to add furigana to all words. It makes reading a LOT easier. It’s computer generated so it’s not always right but it’s still a life saver. I highly recommend giving it a try. Reading a book in Japanese and running into a kanji you don’t know the reading to will quickly drive you nuts. You can also read on a kindle but they don’t add furigana automatically only what the publisher puts and looking up words is really slow.
Oh I read your comment too quickly. You’ll like LingQ even more I think because you can have it put romaji on top of all the Japanese script. Seriously, this app is good for learning Japanese.
I started learning Japanese in 2019. The only app I've used is LingQ and I've built up my library which consists of Japanese novels, UA-cam videos, etc. I also talk to tutors on LingQ.
I'm conversationally fluent now thanks to all the time I've put in. LingQ makes it easier to look up words and build your own library.
I was like you, I knew nothing. I recommend first learning hiragana and katakana. After, try going through the LingQ Japanese mini-stories. From there, it'll slowly start to make sense. Kanji takes a long time to learn (even Japanese people have trouble reading it). But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the process. I've been reading light novels lately and while I do have to look up around 10% of the words, I understand the stories. I try and stay away from difficult content that consists of 15% or more unknown words.
P.S. Stay away from Romaji!

ling UX on mobile is pretty horrible though
translation is a bad beginner fundamental foundation for true native like L2 language understanding. or at the very least....very inefficient. sounds so self defeating in IMHO. or am I confused?
LingQ seems..very outdated in terms of how it is designed. In french it has a lot of mistakes that, if i didnt know the words, wouldnt know while learning, and wiukd learn things incorrectly
I don't think this is comprehensive input. you are translating, and when you translate you are not able to retain the vocabulary, it goes to short-term memory. Instead of spending money on this app, hire a tutor on preply or amazing talker and ask them to teach you the way the
Poly-glot-a-lot chanel does(look at language exchange video) once you have 500 words of vocabulary they can read you child's stories and ask you questions. for the price of the app, you can get a 30 min lesson weekly at preply or amazing talker.
Ah, bull sh.t ??? This guy is not an expert and he doesn’t know what he is talking about. You should be reading native originated material ! Furthermore, Linkq does not give accurate reports of words known.

Ultimately you should want to use your new language in the real world but if you spend all your time with material that has been dumbed down for students you will never ever do well in the real world that natives deal with every day.
Of course that is the ultimate goal. But you can’t do both while learning? I don’t get your point.
