Annie Lennox is known for her gender bending persona and artistic approach in the music group Eurythmics which she fronted. The eurythmics was a massive success in the 1980s with songs like Sweet Dreams, Missionary Man, Here Comes the Rain. You should check them out also. She is also known world wide for her lifelong activism for AIDS research and Resources especially in Africa. As well as her work with LGBTQ outreach. The ballerinas she used in the music video and touring are described here: Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is an all-male drag ballet troupe that parodies the conventions of romantic and classical ballet. In 2008, they performed at the Royal Variety Performance in front of Prince Charles. The dancers portray both male and female roles in a humorous style that combines parodies of ballet, posing, and physical comedy with "straighter" pieces intended to show off the performers' technical skills. Much of the humor is the male dancers performing en travesti in roles usually reserved for females, while wearing tutus and dancing en pointe.
The fact that the video gave you such a strong reaction is why Annie Lennox has such a strong fanbase. You never knew what she would serve up next, and it was always a visual feast. You should check our her cover of Strange Fruit as that will definitely give you a big reaction!

The music video is a dream set in a 19th Century French bordello, where strange individuals are playing out some kinds of bizarre fantasies. Human behavior. The song about losing ones function to speak and not being able to utter those very important words, I LOVE YOU. This is a masterpiece, this is ART!

Hey No Limit Twon. What Annie Lennox is portraying is a movie version of the art work of the French artist, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. He was very short and unattractive to women. So He ofter visited a brothel. Actually several but one particular. He would draw the people there as well as the scenery. If you Google him you'll see the resemblance of the two. BTW: He's the father of poster art like you see on Albums and CD's
The setting is a brothel in 1800s France. Annie's character learns about love/sex by hearing adults doing it, then ends up as a singer in a brothel where people come to indulge their tastes . . .
It’s about people that don’t fit the “norm” and the tremendous rejection they feel but also anyone that feels so much rejection. They feel the pain of love and had enough. No more I love you’s sets them fee but they are celebrating their differences and understanding of each other.
Annie Lennox has been pushing boundaries since way before you were born, mostly with regards to gender roles. As Annie was once quoted as saying, “I love to be an individual, to step beyond gender.”
This song has 2 very strong meanings, yes it's about her relationship with her Eurithmics partner and leaving the realionship on a bittersweet note but it's also about her standing for the gay community at the time and the acceptance that everyone is equal in their beliefs. Anne Lennox was and still is beyond the times and willing to stand for beliefs that at that time were still at odds. Exemplary voice and uncanny sense for voicing what was to come that has been looked over for so long.
These guys are (or were?) a dance troupe that put on vaudeville type shows. How and why she picked them ?? Who knows. But her voice is amazing. I can listen to her do anything. She said in an interview she wanted 4 men that can dance en pointe (on their tip toes which is very hard for men to do as we have different muscles in our legs and such than woman).
Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo is a gay comedy ballet troupe. They have been around since 1974 and they perform around the world doing their version of ballet classics with a comedic twist. Most videos of the 80s and 90s didn't really make much sense, regardless of the genre, it was just a visual. Annie Lennox was always certainly gender bending using both male and female personas. She is truly one of the most beautiful women in the world, with one of the most beautiful voices, and certainly one of the most beautiful hearts!

Maybe she is playing off that era or maybe she is just pushing against the norm and stop passing judgement. That’s what I take from it.
There is a difference between a performer/entertainer and an artist. She expresses her art in music and has the talent to back it up. Art has no purpose but to exist and evoke a response from you. Where craftsmanship is a talent to produce, artists can make you feel something that doesn't have to be defined.
I think this is a song about how crazy being in love can make us sometimes and she's talking about the fact that she isn't in love anymore so the "madness" is leaving her.
here is an interview form the artist herself talking a bit about the video- love the Toulouse Lautrec reference ! ua-cam.com/video/po2aJVBiW2s/v-deo.html
Great choice. You really are expanding your music experience my friend. You ought to check out "Melissa Ethridge- Come to my window". You won't be disappointed.
The room is filled with "monsters". She is a woman who has been broken by lost love. She can no longer feel the pain of that loss, she can feel nothing any more but is aware of the change in herself. There is so much going on, on so many levels, you can watch this video and puzzle over it for years, pulling threads. The images are based on the paintings of French artist Toulouse Lautrec. Women's parts in plays used to be filled by men, as being on stage was not considered appropriate for respectable women. But as you can see, there are women in the audience, "disrespectable" women, catering to the needs of the male audience. The ballet troupe in the video is an actual gay men's troupe, you can see they are very good dancers. There is a lot of gender-bending going on, the prostitutes are dressing their clients up in their women's clothing. And Annie is also a young girl in a nightgown, depicting innocence. Yet obviously she lives there in the theatre. And the man in the mask, I got no clue at all.
I'm not gonna put you down for not being comfortable with drag...it takes time to learn the art of drag and it's not easy for some people to be open to new things ..let's not all judge this guy, at least he is willing to try new things. It's hard to be thrown Into something you don't understand but I hope, brother, you can get something out of annie lennox because she is a damn living icon and has one of the most recognized voices for the past forty years
Annie is the one of the OG of gender fluidity she played with both feminine and androgynous themes much like Bowie. The music and video has layers of meaning but if you can imagine a situation where you maybe are expressing your self (word, clothes, art, gender, sexuality etc) and the world outside doesn’t understand or is critical of it (no more I love yous/they are acting really crazy) you can see how demoralizing that can be and the conflict it incites within you (demons in room at night) should you continue to express or repress? (desire, despair, desire, so many monsters). A lot of Annie’s work deals with mental health themes- self identity, anxiety, depression, codependent relationships, gender identity etc hope that helps?
The grief of losing an all-important relationship brings her to the brink of insanity. This is my take. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are a legit. all-male ballet troupe. Classically trained often performing in a comic context.
when you listen to a song on the radio or anywhere they play music the video dosent have to make sense its 90% about the song the music the vocals and the delivery
You should check out the orriginal version of this song by The Lover Speaks. Might also check out Annie Lennoxs other bands The Tourist, she was in this band with Dave Stewart, then they went on to form The Eurythmics.
Annie was fairly androgenous in the 70's and 80s--not unlike David Bowie. She was influenced by him. The male ballet dancers are a well known troupe that can be a little campy butperfect for this video.
Greetings from Bonnie Scotland - Here is a recommendation for you the group is = The Fratellis and the song is "Chelsea Dagger". Really worth a view and a listen.
You made men in tutus a thing instead of seeing the video for what it was - a great piece of creative art. Chill out and appreciate real talent when you encounter it at every level.
@No Limit Twon basically the reason she chose men, was because in the era that the music video is supposedly set, women werent allowed to be actors etc... Did you know the first corsets were developed for men? It was supposed to broaden the mens shoulders making them seem more masculine 😊 and nowadays we have the term Drag, do you know the origins of that word? Its because in Shakespeares era (the videos 'era') Shakespeare would jot in the margins so and so enters stage left DRAG... (DR)essed (A)s (G)irl... Hence why we use the term drag 😊 as for that era... Yeah society was kinda sexist until fairly late... Also yeah... Annie Lennox is pro LGBT, didnt and wouldn't allow gender norms to control her throughout her wonderful career 😊
Back in 1995 when this was released people were confused and shocked by the "ballerina dudes" but usually in 2020 people aren't. It's not uncommon to see a guy in a dress, heels, wigs, or makeup today.
I have a theory about the "visual" of the video, she says "no more i love you's", because she probably had a bad relashionship with this person and the guys dressed as ballerinas maybe are the way Annie would probably will see men from now on! Not like the way woman look at man, like muscular, big and dominant, but like the way man see woman, as sweet, innocent, delicate and fragile, like a ballerina, in this particular scenario! When she says "the language is leaving me", i think she's saying "i will not play the innocent, kind and sweet part of the woman, who says i love you all the time just to be cheated again"!
Dude, it's called ART. Annie always played with sexual ambiguity (in her first video "Sweet Dreams Are Made of These") she looked & dressed as a man. A pretty femme man. I think her message is check the talent, the vocals, the artistry shining through all this madness. Pay attention to the ARTIST in me. She remains a uniquely gifted artist... even today.
You have discovered a masterpiece. No More I Love Yous is a Renaissance Painting set into motion.
That’s a great description actually!
Woman were not allowed to participate in acting in plays back then. All roles were played by men regardless of the gender of the character
Actually, this video is a direct reference to La Belle Epoque and the art of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
I prefer the original version by “ The Lover Speaks”
Couldn't agree more! That is art!

Annie is artistic, theatrical and has always been progressive. She's wonderful.
when you listen to a song on the radio or anywhere they play music the video dosent have to make sense its 90% about the song the music the vocals and the delivery
Just watched it, it sucks
You kept pausing this amazing song too much. Too caught up in the video to really listen to and enjoy her music. Damnnn!!
Have you reacted your her song "WHY"...INCREDIBLE
Shes basically ran out of f'@£s to give. She's awakening to the madness and sees the reality. She is no longer naive.
The words of the song explain the vdeo
Check out Missionary Man when she was with Eurythmics!!!!
What a blessing in this screwed up world!
Nicki Minaj sampled it for your love .
Outside the word
Dude, it's called ART. Annie always played with sexual ambiguity (in her first video "Sweet Dreams Are Made of These") she looked & dressed as a man. A pretty femme man. I think her message is check the talent, the vocals, the artistry shining through all this madness. Pay attention to the ARTIST in me. She remains a uniquely gifted artist... even today.
