  • Hi friends and welcome to my first Garage Sale of 2021! Woohooo!!
    I am so happy to be able to re-home some of my dumpster diving finds and make a little money while doing it. And thankfully the rain stayed away long enough for me to sell a bunch of it. I really hope you enjoy this video and stay tuned for more yard sale videos coming this spring ~ I still have so much stuff to get rid of! ;)

    In my past yard sales, I would post my goal for the yard sale for all to see. This encouraged them to help me. One year I wanted a swing set for the kids, another I wanted to pay off my last credit card, and the next I wanted to buy a new grill. People often commented about my goals and it seemed they bought more to help me. I was grateful and blessed by all those yardsalers .

      Yes that's a great idea sometimes communicating by signage works wonders. Years ago I stood outside of a military base with a sign that just said THANK YOU. Many people honked their support and one lady gave me a rose! The local paper wanted to do a story on me, but I declined

    I know it was money made from “free trash” but girl you worked hard for that money. You went out and amassed it all, then setting up and working a yard sale is work, so Pat yourself on the back! 💕❤️💕

    Kelly remember that this is your business, a way to make money. Your time has to be included in pricing. Put reasonable prices on items and do not accept low ball offers. Do not let people take advantage of you. Some people will def try to steal so keep and eye on your items. Walk around, make eye contact and greet people. Your hubs should be there too, never do this alone.

    I recommend allocating spaces in your garage for specific items i.e. clothing, toys, etc so when you return from dumpster diving you can put the items directly into each specific category and save double handling. Even if you can't clean the thing immediately, sorting shouldn't take too long and will save you heaps of times when it comes to selling.
    I'd also recommend picking up any plastic crates/bins/totes, especially with lids, in reasonable condition you find whilst diving. The bins can be used to store the items better as well as a display for items during garage sales. Any kind of organisational system you can put in place in advance will help you save time in the long run. Don't forget vertical storage space in the garage. Use any bookcases you find as storage shelves.

      I started doing that with my goodwill items I find & resale. Bring them home, wash them- iron if needed, hang on my hangers/use safety pins to keep those kid items on hangers. The consignment sales ask you do that. I can even pin the little hanging string tag too. So all I do is price what I want & enter in their system when time comes 😉. I save soooo much time doing this. I’m up to 4 pull racks @ Walmart. I just buy another one here & there. Makes my life so much easier storing stuff

    • @donnab6835
      @donnab6835 3 роки тому

      I did the same when I bought storage units. I separated everything out that as yard sale, online sale or trash. Wiped down and tagged yard sale items then put into tubs. I had a yard sale twice a year and it was so nice to have it already marked.

    I have a memory from a very long time ago, stepmom and me and stepsister went to a yard sale together I was around 8 years old. The lady having the sale saw me looking at her barbie dolls. I was fascinated how the shoes fit so perfectly on her tiny feet. I asked my step mom if she would buy her for me. : ( she said NO we couldn't afford it. I sat down and imagined all the clothes I would make that doll and how she would look in the outfits with those pretty pink spike heels. My step mom was done and said lets go. I remember hating to leave that doll behind, but when she said NO that meant NO. We were almost to the car and the women from the yard sale was running up to us. My step mom said something like you better not have taken/broken anything Debbie. I hadn't done a thing but hang up all the clothes in the little case and put the shoes on the shelf. The woman had that case in her hand and I was terrified I had possibly broken s hanger or something. She said to me come here little girl with the freckles yes you! Step mom gave me a dirty look and my step sister snickered like I was in big trouble. The woman said I want you to have this, I looked at my SM and she nodded her head. I accepted and cried giving the lady a hug, saying thank you. It was a 1959 Barbie with a black and white stripped bathing suit. She had ugly hair I thought, but I loved her the moment I saw her. Years later my dad remarried 2 more times, I went to college and when I came home to visit I found out that this last step mom threw away all my dolls, that I had treasured since I was 8-16 years old.

    I truly wish you would consider pricing your items and not letting them go for quite so little. You are selling yourself short. You may obtain the items for free but, you still have expenses in doing so. Not to mention that your time and effort has value.
    Personally, as a shopper, I’m more apt to purchase items that are already priced. I have also had more success with my own yard sales when items are priced.

      I disagree. I sell at a market and never price anything, my buyers like to bundle buy and what I want for certain things can change on the day depending on interest/demand. I am however very proactive with letting them know how cheap something is if I can see they are a bit hesitant. The more they bundle, the cheaper it gets. And then there are the thieves, I quote them high prices 😉

    Price them as you get them. Clean and do any repairs to furniture and then put sheets over them. Use the sheets on the ground for the clothes or shoes or stuffed animals. Do block pricing... ie blue tags $2, yellow tags $5 without the writing on them. Have a pricing guide hung up. Then have red tags as make offer for things you just want to get rid of no matter what. White tags can be larger more expensive items individually marked

      Great idea w the color tags. They do this in a thrift store i been to as well. Also draws your eyes to items. For example, if u know yellow tags are $1, u will spot the cheaper stuff faster. Also for jewellery items do like they do at some stores (ie 3 for $2). It'll move stuff faster.

    Why not set up your garage and have the sale in there rain or shine. Clean & sort & price items as you find them. Box them up, label Yard Sale & contents inside, and stack them. Then when you are ready set up your garage. Easy! I do this all the time. I only put a few pieces outside of the garage like furniture, the rest in the garage arranged & tagged. My personal belongings I put in one area and use a wire stretched and a few flat sheet attached to cafe curtain hooks on the strung wire line as one long curtain to hide my personal stuff. With a sign NOT FOR SALE. I place my tables in front of the curtain so the customers can't see nor reach my personal stuff. Just a suggestion and less work in the end. You could also do the sale 2 days in a row on the second day charge half off or fill a bag for a few $ that way you get rid of stuff make money , then put the rest on FB marketplace for Free left over yard sale stuff all boxed & bagged up by the curb take it all! My stuff is picked up in 20 minutes gone! Makes garage yard sales fun & easy! and make yourself a bunch of $$$$

    I like the idea of the re- usable price tags,,,, I keep lightweight cardboard boxes (eg cereal boxes, KD boxes, etc etc). I cut them to kind of regular sized square, put a sale price on each square, punch a hole on each cardboard square, put string or wool or twine on each piece,,, then as folks purchase stuff, I pull these re- usable sales squares off,, tuck them into a box for the next sale,, then I have a head start on the next yard sale

Having to look on the ground at items is a turnoff for me. Clothes are better on a table also, easier to look through. Having tables end to end also give you a larger surface.

    I wish Yard Sales were a thing in the U.K. but unfortunately they’re not! We have Car Boot Sales or Carbooty’s but it’s hassle having to pack it all, drive to the destination, unpack and set it up, then pack what wasn’t sold again! The Carbootys tend to be in fields so they’re normally out of the way meaning quite a long drive. As i said, it’s hassle! Hopefully Yard Sales will become a thing here soon.

    I don’t remember ever seeing this but how about at some point towards the end of your rummage sale you put your leftover stuff in boxes or large black garbage bags( bigger items ), call them mystery deals and the give them a crazy cheap price like 2 dollars a box or bag? Be sure to seal the boxes so people can’t peak and spoil their surprise probably with one appropriate sized piece duct tape. And THEN if that doesn’t Sell curb alert it? Really enjoy your bubbly soft spoken self also!

    Great looking yard sale-so many fun things! So many things I would have gotten if I had been there😃 If you ever find some or could make some,a sandwich type board right outside your house helps grab a lot of the drive by,impulse shoppers.

    Price the shoes at $5.00 then let them make an offer because some people will pay $5.00 just make sure no one is listing so you don't lose a deal of $5.00

      I agree. $5 a pair of shoes is still very cheap.

    • @dawnsmith7936

      I think 2 dollars was a good price for the shoes , especially because they didn't really sell anyways !

    • @Tammie-Burns1961
      @Tammie-Burns1961 3 роки тому +5

      @@dawnsmith7936 yes but some do ask for a cheaper price like how about $1.00 I say put $5.00 on them and let them make a offer so she can get what she wants. I do the flea market and I get ladies always saying can you take a $1.00 for something I want $2.00 so the next time I go sale I price things up to $5.00 and if they ask if I can take $2.00 and I'll take the $2.00 people think they get a good deal.

    Dumpster diving is hard work. Cleaning up stuff u find takes time and money. Setting up for garage sale is hard work. Don't under price ur items. If u want to sell something for $2, Mark it for $3. People will haggle. Your prices are amazing already. Also I would organize ur garage w bins and as u find and clean stuff, price it and dump in the bins with other similar items ie kids clothing. This way when it's time to set up for garage sale it's much less overwhelming and time consuming. If possible have the garage sale in the garage w big items outside. This way if it rains it's not a scramble to bring stuff back in. Also keeps customers out of sun so maybe they will stick around longer. Keep stuff that doesnt sell. Dont give it away. Keep them for next garage sale. Great job! U worked hard and u earn every cent you make 😙

    I know it’s a lot of work I’ve had many I’d think about maybe doing something with the clothes in the bins older people have a hard time bending over digging and will just walk past stuff down to low

    As you pick things up that you know will be for a future yard sale, you should try to go ahead and price it and box it when you put it in the garage then you’re ready!

    Girl you need to get it organize. When you come home sort it, price tag it and then you can just have a keep side and a sell side. Get you some of those garage metal shelves they are great and your back will thank you. Good luck. Your clothes rack. You should get some permanent glue and glue the ends together.

Etc and that would save your time and effort,☺️ . And you can sell those shoes in ebay that woul make u a lot of money..hope you notice me im watching from the Philippines, god bless you always❤️
