I had to ask my German friend this question and he said, The baltic is 1,8 %salt, Northsea 3,5 % salt but the Brunsbuttel side of the canal is mostly freshwater from the river Elbe. So I guess the canal is a sort of mix.

This canal is in the very North of Germany. It connects the Northsea with the Eastsea. Officially its also called the North- Eastsea Canal.
