Everybody has their own take, but for me the definitive Bonham performance is on Achilles Last Stand. An absolute monster behind the drums.

One of the best rock songs ever created.
John Bonham was an absolute caveman behind the drumkit, yet he had such finesse! He really had everything, groove and raw power. Every member of Led Zeppelin had something else, what a great band. A great listen would be their live versions, to see the great connection the band members had. John Bonham and John Paul Jones provided a foundation like no other, with the roaring guitar and vocals from Page and Plant.
Well, everyone dances to Watts, Wyman, Jones & Richards whereas no one can dance to Zep, as great as they were. The difference between Rock…and Roll. Charlie is my Darling…
Great, intelligent reaction as always. Entertaining Enlightenment, let's call it! One of my fav quotes about John Bonham is from Jimi Hendrix. I may be off a bit here, but Hendrix had seen them play very early in their career (Hendrix died in 1970, of course), and came up to Bonzo after the show and said: "Boy, you got a right foot like a country jackrabbit!" LOL I'm sure that made Bonham's day, heh. Like Zeppelin itself, he could go heavy or light, with equal mastery.
Actually Hendrix said Bonham's foot was like Castanets!

I love these kind of videos, especially as an advanced musician. I tend to drop tidbits of this kind of thing in comments on reactions but without a deep immersion like this, it's just so difficult to really help people understand.
And that last one was actually called Fool in the Rain; you should react to it I bet you would love it. In fact I like a whole lot of stuff off that final album right before Bonzo died. So many great songs but Fool in the Rain is just incredible. For the 1st and last thirds of the song, which is what he was breaking down structurally there at the end, Bonham took something that was known as a Purdie Shuffle, the really cool Shuffle named after the drummer that popularized it, and then of course he put his own twist on it and made it even more difficult to play, laugh. But it works perfectly in the song.
In the middle third of Fool in the Rain, which was what they were just playing audio-wise in the outro of this video you just reacted to, it goes crazy with this insane calypso thing and it also adds steel drums and whatnot. The whole thing is just so fun.
Also check out The Crunge which is so fun and funny but complicated for sure and it basically references James Brown.
In terms of polyrhythms and oddball time signatures, check out videos like this one where they break down Rush songs. Your mind will be blown. 😀
I heard that. No matter how proficient you are at a certain skill, going back to study the basics again is always beneficial in some way. You always learn something you didn't know, or had forgotten.
That mid section of Fool in the Rain always transports me to a Rio carnival.

I’m a drummer who’s been listening to Led Zeppelin before Bonham even died. I’ve been trying to tell everyone for decades that what really sets Bonzo apart (aside from his locomotive aggression) was his groove. For anyone trained in music we can hear it. His groove is predicated upon playing behind the beat, on the beat, and ahead of the beat between the limbs and during fills and cuts with the band. He has a slinky rubber band feel as opposed to the strict metronomic computer style we have today. Led Zeppelin‘s music is breathing in tempo and rhythm and they are all doing it perfectly together. That’s what makes it so exciting. And Bonham was the conductor of it all.
Great idea. Other UA-cam reaction hosts would not dig in deeper to learn more about the music we are analyzing. Its shows an honest and dedicated interest in what you're doing. You give it 100 percent Syed, just like Bonham did.
For me, it is a top 5, with Bonham, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, Bill Ward and Cozy Powell, with an honorable mention for the great Carl Palmer. For me, they bring the thunder to rock and have super star percussion skills. Who hoo, play anything with them on it and enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Their music is just plain modern musical magic, those guys will always be heard. You really can make a case for them being the best rock band of any era.
Keith Moon is nowhere near the top 5. I love Keith, but he is not considered by anyone to be "one of the greats." He's Bombastic, entertaining, but he is not a technically above average drummer by any standard.
Ginger baker should be in there especially over moon.

Polyphonic is an amazing channel. The video essays covering Pink Floyd's material is top notch. Especially the video about Echoes, with the narration keeping pace with the song as it plays.
You have to keep going! The Wanton Song is on Physical Graffiti and you’re still getting through III. The Wanton Song is one nugget among many on that album. Page is also doing crazy stuff with some jazz chords and his usual interesting effects on the solo. Lots to get to in this crazy catalogue.

Bonham, Baker & Moon are my holy trinity of Rock drummers. Each was a force unto themselves, that could stand out among the best musicians the played with and be the heartbeats of some of the greatest bands we’ve heard. ✌️❤️🎶
Yes but none of them was better then the professor Neil peart.
Seen them all up close- very very close - in their primes. But not one of those guys rolls like Watts. Which is why The Stones are the only danceable band since the 60s. In that respect, Watts is actually closer to Krupa whereas the others closer to Buddy Rich. Charlie is my Darling…

I think the Beatles also built many songs on Ringos drum patterns. It’s to Led Zeppelin s credit that they really emphasized their strengths and recorded Bonham very well and mixed the drums quite high in the mix which wasn’t commonly done in those days. Notice how with Cream that Gingers drums are lower in the mix and he sounds more like he is filling in around the riff, I think Ginger was at least as good as Bonham but he wasn’t recorded as well or placed at the center of the compositions. You can hear how great Bonham was because Led Zeppelin put him front and center.

Good point about how Zeppelin featured Bonham front and center. Taking full advantage of such talent took Zeppelin's songs to the next level.

Excellent video on my all time favorite band and one of my all time favorite drummers. I don't usually like to speak of "the" favorite, since it can change over time and mood. But I don't thing Zep has ever dropped out the the number 1 slot for me. You should keep your love for drumming alive by continuing to play. If a full acoustic kit doesn't work in your current environment, consider an electronic kit that you can play with headphones. They don't take up as much space either. You are a musician at heart, with a great ear. Build on that. I started at 50 and progressed a lot, and you have many more years ahead of you to build on what you started.
Power is one element. His time signatures and feel make him extraordinary. And Page's ability to accommodate and understand, instinctively what to do is paranormal.

I've always loved this video and was thrilled to see that you reacted to it to provide your usual thoughtful analysis.
I read about the math on When the Levee Breaks a couple different times so I knew this. What was amazing was how Bonham did this.
As a blues fan who was nursed on blues through rock as a kid Zeppelin's WTLB is the greatest blues performance they did, But the reason Zeppelin was a band that resonated with me was their blues background.
I would also suggest you look up some of the videos of Krupa and Rich on UA-cam and indulge the pleasure of listening to some great music even if it is from the 40s. The music is out off this world. I learned to appreciate this music early from my dad and also from a love of older vintage movies. Opening your mind to stuff like big band and watching it on you tuve takes you a real eye opening journey.

For a great example of Bonham following the Page riff watch Dazed & Confused from Song Remains The Same. He perfectly copies Pages riffs in a section about 5-6 minutes in. There is also a great moment immediately after showing Jones and Bonham interacting live on stage where Bonham shakes his head at Jones as he plays a note and Jones changes tack and they go off into the 'San Francisco section'. It could be one of the greatest few minutes caught on video in rock history.

Bonham, Ginger Baker, Bill Ward, Carl Palmer all made their mark with their own unique styles. But my choice goes to Neil Peary. Not only was his timing and live performances spot on, but he did it into his 60's. He also supplied all the lyrics for Rush. Intelligent and thought provoking lyrics.

Bonham live was a beast !! His drumming on In My Time Of Dying on the 75 tour was orgasmic !!!
Well, I've seen him live (in Vienna). I am not much into the drummers, but of all the band I was the most impressed by him. I couldn't believe how precise his timing is, I would bet that the atomic clock is less precise then him, he was right on the every bit throughout the concert, down to millisecond. No doubt he was the ideal rock drummer.
But not rock and ROLL drummer. Watts!!!
and John was very impressed by a drummer named Buddy Rich ...who is quite impressive , i found this out late in my music journey ...
Bonham was a much bigger fan of Gene Krupa though.

Look for: John Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Aynsley Dunbar (Frank Zappa band), Ginger Baker (Cream), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes).
There are so many top-tier drummers……couple of dozen. That’s why I hate the endless “my guy was best” trip.

Never be another quite like John Bonham. He was the backbone of Led Zeppelin, and could never be replaced - hence why when he passed away, the band decided to split. Rest in heavenly peace Bonzo, forever in our hearts. ❤

Love “The Wanton Song”. Wanton, emphasis on the first syllable, as in a Wanton Woman, sexually unrestrained. I would have to say it’s one of my favorite tunes.

Great reaction to my all time favourite band. In the last 2 years a new band (to me) has captivated me. If you haven't heard of Bandmaid, I suggest you give them a listen. They've become my 2nd all time band just behind LZ. Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year they just keep getting better and better. Try their recently released instrumental MV, From Now On or Freedom (live version) from 2020 World Domination Tour.

Arguably, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart are right there with him. I would place Ginger Baker ahead of Bonham musically and Bonham ahead of Ginger Baker technically.
And Baker would and did laugh at that. He preferred Watts. As do I if dancing and not “technique” is most important.

Who's the greatest Rock drummer is totally subjective. For sure John Bonham is the heaviest hitting drummer, especially with his use of the bass, and he's in everyone's top 3 or 5 of all-time, but for me the greatest rock drummer is Neal Peart from Rush. My top 5, in order, is #1 Peart, #2 Bonzo, #3 Keith Moon - The Who, #4 Ringo Starr - The Beatles, #5 Charlie Watts - The Rolling Stones.
Polyphonic is my single favorite UA-cam channel. Best music analysis on the platform. If you're a music fan, you have to get into his stuff.

He was an incredible innovator and his sound and approach to rock drumming changed the genre. If you’re a hard rock drummer whether you know it
or not, you’re influenced by Bonham because he changed rock drumming forever.
Bonham is one of the greatest rock drummers. But I think it's impossible for there to be a single GOAT. John is unique and of course extremely talented. And the worldwide popularity of Led Zeppelin has a lot to do with him being considered by many to be the best. There's many drummers that are just as talented, but get overlooked because they're not as well known among the average music listener. I always thought the drummers Frank Zappa used in his bands were amazing.
Imo, Buddy Rich is in the GOAT list. But most folks have never heard of him, unless they're drummers themselves.
John Bonham and Kieth Moon both had a propensity for alcohol consumption. From what I gather, they were talkin shop once. One made a remark that compared to most of the music on the charts, they'd rather listen to somebody throwin up. Well, they got the brilliant idea to actually do that. Well, I heard it once, but from the sound, it coulda been anybody.
Bonzo was a genius. Nothing more to say. I don't do this "greatest ever" thing. Because there are many great drummers and they all have/had their own style. That's part of what makes them great. I just don't compare them. Bonham, Peart, Carey, Ward,...... all time greats!
Agreed…..a dozen or more top-tier drummers…same as guitarists and vocalists. And the studio drummers……Few outside the business know their names but they are outstanding players.
John Bonham, and Niel Peart are probably the two best, and I don't know who is #1 and who is #2. Both are very different in style. It's like comparing Stevie Ray Vaughn, to Jimi Hendrix. Both are great, but I give the nod to Jimi, because he created all the stuff SRV emulated, a good 25 years before in 1967. Just as a side note, SRV said Jimi was his idol, and would always be the Best.
Forget 'Black Dog' ....LOL.... Let's hear 'The Wanton Song', that groove was insanely good! jk, we have a couple albums to go before 'Physical Graffiti". This video broke down the components of Bonham's intricate style in a such a way that even a novice such as myself could understand.

I convinced a cover band I was in that we had to do Wanton Song so I could drum this groove. It was the highlight of every gig for me.

The greatest drummer I have ever seen (besides Neil Peart of Rush) is Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. Watch the song Anesthetize (live in Tilberg) by Porcupine Tree. A must see!
Notice that the guy in the video within the video gives no examples of Krupa's or Rich's use of triplets in the groove on the kick bass.

No denying Bonzo's amazing drum skills but there were many amazing drummers in the history of rock and roll music. To me the most underrated is Ringo Starr and many great drummers agree with me.
I would argue that Bill Ward should be mentioned in the same breath. I know, I know, many people say Bonham has better technical chops, but thats not everything. Ask Andrew Rooney, who has recently discovered both Bonham and Ward, here on UA-cam, which he thinks is the GOAT.
The major difference between Bonham and Ward, is Bonham’s power. There’s really no comparison to anyone else, on that note, and I think thats the real reason why he comes out ahead.
Easy question. "Nothing" is the answer. There is no such thing as the "greatest rock drummer." He was good. No question. But there is no way to measure or compare drumming greatness. So it just comes down to preference. We all all have our own views on that.
Some might say Gavin Harrison and others Neal Peart … what do you like and who is best at it? There are currently a lot of excellent drummers Marco Minneman is another superstar …Nick D’Virgilio of Big Big Train. Steve Hackett has had some excellent drummers. Phil Collins was no slouch either.
You should check out a guy called Danny Carey from tool, one of the best ever.
He likes his polyrhythms, (3 beats in a bar on one hand and 5 beats in a bar on another hand e.g .

The greatest rock drummer according to Buddy was Carl Palmer. He was the only rock drummer who Buddy said had the technique and feel of a master percussionist.
