If the Planets Replaced Our Moon

  • Here's what it might look like if some of the solar system's planets were the same distance from us as the Moon.
    Note that if any of this were to happen in real life, it would probably be apocalyptic.

      Ooooh including the dwarf planets and dwarf planet candidates! Although, to be honest, I think they might be a bit unimpressive (except maybe Pluto because of its unique appearance) because they're all smaller than the Moon.

    • @UpcycleElectronics

      Yee Tee
      I think they are extremely interesting, and will reveal lots of information about how little we know about space, our solar system, and astronomy in general. We infer and assume the majority of what we know about astronomy through distant observation and simulations where we input our limited understanding and theories as the absolute factors of calculation. We do the best we can with the tools we have. In the end to assume is to make an Ass-U-Me. I don't think it's wise to pretend to have a complete understanding of an object until we've thoroughly explored it. We don't have the resources to explore all of our recently discovered planets at this point in our civilization, but I think it is foolish to discard things we don't know as meaningless instead of remaining open and optimistic.
      I also reject the idea of defining planetary bodies by subjective external factors. I doubt you would reject calling a little person, none human because you think they are a dwarf. I don't call a car a bicycle because it is in a bike lane. Planets orbit a star or star system, are kinda round, and are large enough to create differentiation through gravitational separation. Differentiation means the planet also had or still has active geology. The threshold for fairly uniform differentiation appears to be objects around 900km in diameter. Defining object relative to other objects is foolish as well. My gram of gold is no less valuable because it is next to a Kilogram of lead. The marginalization of so many remarkable planetary discoveries in modern times is an absolute disgrace of the scientific community in this golden age of astronomy. Instead of the discoveries drawing in the interests of the public at large, these great discoveries go largely unrecognized. It may take a few hundred years for that perspective to readjust, but eventually the realization will set in that these things only happen once in all of history. These objects will then be explored in depth, and everyone related to this planetary definition blunder will be remembered as fools because of their bias and lack of foresight.
      -Jake

      Upcycle Electronics Oh, sorry, I made it sound like I consider those objects as non-planets, didn't I? I actually believe that they're planets too, just maybe in a third category (keyword *maybe*), since people like to categorize everything. -_-
      I didn't mean to stir up any disagreement, sorry!
      > When I said that they might look unimpressive, I didn't mean that the objects were unimpressive themselves. Quite the opposite, actually.

      Dwarfs aren't people either
      Don't buy into the BS. Planets are defined by differentiation through gravitational separation.
      Your car is no less a car because it is next to a bicycle. A star is no less a star because of how many planets it has. Only imbeciles define objects by subjective external factors. The IAU can jump off that bridge. Anyone with intellect thinks for themselves. Words are always defined democratically through common use. The only thing accomplished by the biggest scientific blunder of the early 21st century is causing the public to ignore the golden age of astronomy we currently live in. More planets have been discovered in the last few decades than people are told exist. That's pathetic. There are around 19 planets. Take your shoes off if counting gets too hard.

    • @rykermoorcroft4474
      @rykermoorcroft4474 6 років тому +1

      It is known as a dwarf planet as it has not cleared it's orbit. This means that there are multiple other bodies in its neighbourhood. That is why it is labelled a dwarf planet not because of its size. (The edit was because of a grammatical error.)

    • @UpcycleElectronics
      @UpcycleElectronics 6 років тому +1

      Ryker Moorcroft
      Little people everywhere are coming to get you because, through inference you implied they are not people.
      I suppose you call your car a bicycle if one is parked nearby as well? Have we determined the number of planets needed in order to call those nuclear fusion things stars?
      "Cleared orbit" is a joke. No one defines any objects anywhere by subjective external factors. This will go down in history as one of the biggest mistakes of the modern era. It is absolutely inevitable.
      This "cleared orbit" is related to small thinking. "Planet" must encompass all planets by the time we begin to travel outside of our solar system at the latest. In reality it will happen sooner because of the exponential growth of planetary studies that is about to happen after the next generation of telescopes reveal tens of thousands of new planetary discoveries. The current definition will appear infantile and wholely inadequate soon. The entire basis of reasoning on the subject is isolated to observable phenomenon within our solar system. Our entire solar system is completely insignificant in the scale of objects encompassed by the word "planet." Saying any object large enough to experience active geology through mass redistribution due it's mass and gravity "isn't a planet" is foolish. You have no ability to exclude something scientifically from any observation until you have a complete understanding of all potential variables with a large repeatable dataset. If I understand this right, you want to assume you have a large enough dataset on planetary bodies with a single observed location that has several unanswered data points? You believe your data is so complete you can effectively start excluding information? That doesn't sound like science to me. It sounds like stupid people that like to display unreasonable bias. The only reason I see for the entire "definition" debacle was political grandstanding and pop culture recognition for a few people that were involved. This is especially the case because it happened just before a large scale media campaign to support awareness for the very object the debacle went out of it's way to exclude. Anyone that saw the images of Pluto and thought "not a planet" is an imbecil. If your standing on the surface of an object that orbits the sun, has a flat apparent horizon, and an eruption is occuring on an enormous mountainous volcano right beside you, but you say "nope..not a planet" because of some subjective reasons that are hundreds of thousands of miles away, I'm going to laugh at you.
      I see absolutely no scientific methodology or intuitive intellectual reasons for such an effort. In fact, it appears quite the opposite. I've heard plenty of emotional excuses like school kids can't remember how many fingers they have and other unscientific nonsense like this. I have yet to hear anyone that can articulate a scientific reason for the exclusion of these planetary discoveries. How do you believe this can expand, or improve the studying of planetary science? Does this cause more people to take an interest in further scientific research and discoveries in new and unexplored areas of scientific research? Does this help us better expand our current understanding? As I see it, this is a pointless emotional distraction that is completely lacking scientific evidence or qualification. I believe those involved will go down in history with this mistake being the only thing of note on the record of their scientific existence...sad really
