Being young, I used to listen to these songs frequently as they were played by my parents. After quite sometime, I finally found these songs here. Thank you for the post. I listen to them repeatedly and never get bored. The songs and lyrics show me an important lesson: older people indeed have more truth and wisdom. No matter what happen, we need to show our appreciation and respect to older people/our predecessors. Thank you Zhou Xuan, even she is no longer here.

Her angelic voice and pretty cutie face made her to be the top singer in the early Chinese music industry from 1930 's to 40s. It's so sad that she died at the young age of 37 while the last five years she had to stay in hospital for her mental problems, which would add more dramatic elements to her life. It's a perfect example of how life is tentative.
wing lee I watched a documentary and I think it was in mandarin so I didn't understand what was being said. Just by watching the pictures though it looks like she had a difficult upbringing and rocky relationships. She had movie star good looks and a voice of an angel, but I wished she had not experienced so much pain in her life.

Her father was an opium addict and hence she, as a baby, was adopted and raised by a Zhou family from which she got her last name Zhou while nobody knew her biological father's last name. She liked singing and she performed singing in the streets of Shanghai at 12. She was tiny and slim but was gorgeous and cute, just like a little girl next door. Two years later, she was recruited as a dancer and singer by a dancing club where she practice her singing even more harder, harder than anybody else. A few months later she won the champion of a biggest singing contest in Shanghai and right away became the top and hottest singer and movie star. From that time onward, her manager pushed per to the limit and manipulated her like a money printer. After a few years, she was married to her husband who spent most of her money until the late 40's when she had two sons and was the most famous diva. She found herself to be a very unhappy woman and in early 50's she had to be admitted into a mental hospital until the end of her life in 1957. I believe she had a very sad life despite of her talent and fame.
My grandma listen to this in 60s in malaya...nolstagia..she left china n sailed the sea with her 8 yr old son in the 30s..n the 8 yr old boy was my late dad.....those time...now i m living in sg...

Like drinking great vintage Bordeaux 1937 wine, which we can't afford that expensive wine but we can listen and taste that memorable ambience . 1937 was also an excellent vintage dating back to ww2
I have so many Chinese favorites, but I don't know the names of all of them... Love the Chinese people and their music. When I lost my job in construction, back in the day, I had a Chinese friend, whose dad owned a restaurant called the Taste of Hong Kong, located in Euless, Tx, he got me a job there and work for several months. They treated me like family, whic his more than I can say for most other employers I've worked for.
No this song has its origin much earlier than Lee's movie, dating back to a period in China when the country was plunged in a civil war with Japanese invasion looming. If I remember correct, it's from the movie called 馬路天使(literally translated as angels of the streets), a monochrome movie.

The huqin playing is very nice. Are they using a 低胡 to play the low part? It doesn't sound like a cello. The lowest note of the low part goes down to low A (an octave and a fourth below the erhu's low D).
