You misunderstand. He is not terrifying because he was once an angel. He is not terrifying in spite of being an Angel. The Angels in the Bible were scary unknowable creatures that were so scary they often had to start with saying "Be not afraid"

Also, you may have noticed he is unbelievably powerful. We've caught glimpses of Alastor's strength. However, Lucifer didn't even flinch when Alastor attacked the loan sharks. Not to mention he defeated Adam without much effort, a feat Alastor failed at.

I find it interesting how Alastor looks and behaves more like how the audience would expect the Devil to be than Lucifer does. 😯😈

@@Squibblezombie I mean you could say that, however, in the show we're shown that the angels (which fall into the kinda category that we can assume lucifer was) are shown to kinda be not intimidating like st peter. At the end of the day, he was surrounded by good beliefs and everything when he came into existence. Sorry if I'm not explaining all that well

True. And he lost SO much. He fell from heaven from doing what he thought was right. Forever watching from a distance, seeing only the worst of humanity.he gifted free will and humans squandered it. And even after he made huge sacrifice his original home and status in heaven, after he lost it all. Suddenly, his wife left him. Leaving him single dad. Which honestly sucks.

    Rubber Duck Theory:
he had memories of Charlie being happy playing with them and is desperately trying to recapture the happiness of that time. when the family was whole. when he was enough for them.

I think that Lucifer placed Razzle and Dazzle as Charlie's protectors. When he entered the hotel this was the first thing (after greeting Kiki - another protector and magic enabler--> see rebuilding hotel in the finale) to check on them if they grew or not. Them growing means Charlie is in a pinch because she uses her demonic powers which she rarely does in accordance to her personality. So when she does, it equals an emergency and she might be in danger. So I believe that Lucifer got the first "telepathic sign" from them when they turned into their dragon forms and the second when Dazzle was killed. A few minutes later he appears[before he needed a whole hour to visit Charlie at the hotel]. That's why I think that he in fact watched over her by placing them as "danger markers" at her side.

Since it's a representation of his dreams, it's probably that he thinks of mortal souls as ducks, and originally he wanted to elevate everyone at his level, turn everyone into an angel like he and Lilith tried to do with Eve. He tried to turn ducks into angels, got his dreams crushed and he became obsessed with just ducks, forgetting what they were even supposed to represent.

In episode 8, I feel that Lucifer's "sorry I wasn't here sooner" is alluding to Lucifer needing to overcome his own internal battle. Rather than Lucifer consciously choosing to let Charlie get as far as she could on her own, I think Lucifer was battling his own internalized belief that you can't go against heaven. And it took his daughter being in very real danger to break through that internal block he had; thus, his apology was kinda like saying "sorry it took me so long to be ready to be there for you".

There's also a theory that Razzle dying was the catalyst, especially since Lucifer "usually charges a sacrificial lamb" for getting involved. I don't know if I buy that one myself, but then there's also the deal that was mentioned being made during Charlie's first meeting with Adam. In it, Lute clarifies that hellborn (which includes Charlie) are spared from the extermination while Lucifer allowed the sinners to be purged in exchange. Once Adam tries going after Charlie, though, the deal was off and Lucifer was free to join the fight.

Or maybe because his contract with Heaven stated that he couldn’t be involved during the annual extermination, in exchange for hellborn demons being spared.
But once Adam tried to kill Charlie (a hellborn demon), the contract became null and void, because he broke the deal, allowing Lucifer to intervene.

@@jeffreyherrera5069i like the deal theory. I mean it makes sense. Until that point, Adam and the Exorcists act within their right, when killing the sinners, so Lucifer couldn't do anything without voiding that deal, which would potentially lead to an all out war, instead of a anual extermination (yeah, Adam made it to every 6 months, but you get my point)
So i think Lucifer decidedly waited until heaven broke the deal themselfs. We even see him only Hit Adam, to get him away from Charlie. After that he distracts Adam, but never really hurt him, until adam, again, attacks Charlie. He is propably powerfull enough to annihilate the whole Exorcist army, if he so chooses, but that may have made things much worse

Plus, because Helluva Boss is here free on UA-cam, there's less tangly copyright stuff to deal with, meaning she could go more in depth with the songs and what's shown in them (and both series show through song a LOT. They're True Musicals, where the songs actually move along plot and character development as well as entertaining, not just shiny fun distractions like the way Disney uses them).

This is briefly mentioned in the first episode during Charlie’s meeting with Adam - that a bargain made with her father spared her the exorcist’s blade: perhaps that’s also the reason why Charlie feels so strongly about the exterminations - she feels guilty over the fact that she’s protected while others aren’t, which in turn motivates her to go into the thick of the fighting in spite of having no real combat experience (she wants to experience the same risk that she’s asking others to take for her).

Only halfway through the video, but I (not a therapist or psychologist) get the idea that Lucifer's depression comes from a really insidious place: he tried to do the right thing by giving humans free will, and ended up indirectly causing all the sins of the world. It seems to me that his dismissal of sinners is intertwined with his fixation on his own failure. He tried to do the right thing, and accidentally created all evil, which kind of puts forth the (incorrect) idea in his head that trying to do good is somehow wrong, and that knuckling under is somehow right.
I can relate to that feeling, if not nearly so extreme, and probably a lot of people can too. I think we've all had experiences where we try to do good or to help people and it blows up in our face

He's so afraid of Heaven (or more accurately, Charlie being hurt by them) that he's grasping at straws to avoid the point of the visit, and how he's afraid to help her for the possible consequences.
I also thought it was so sad his 'joke' about falling off the railing. Like, that's clearly some kind of suicidal ideation, right? 'L'apple du vide', to turn a very punny phrase.

and let's be real, he turns out to be 90% right about heaven. they don't listen to her. even emily, who is sympathetic, ends up not helping (in spite of promising to). and it makes things worse - the only reason the angels don't kill her found family is because alastor coerces her into a deal that, again, let's be real, is going to cause something horrific down the road. and the fallout of the battle could well result in escalations, even a full scale war, that kill not only sinners, but also innocent hellborn whose only sin was literally being born there.

I would like to point out some other details, especially in More Than Anything. When he says "now your the only thing worth fighting for" the illisttion of the exterminators is perfect, it not only showcases the dangers Lucifer was put through; but the weight it has on him - and how much it terrifies him knowing that Charlie is following in his footsteps.
Again, before this when he turns his back to Charlie and casts away the light, it shows that he still holds his dreams dear - yet its too painful for him to do anything about it, so he just gives up.
And the scene with Lilith, you can see that Lucifer wants to keep Charlie with him - because it seems like he's happy that someone looks up to him, that someone values his ideas and dreams. When Lilith takes Charlie, he doesn't hesitate because he still loves Lilith; but when Lilith walks away without a second glance, he realizes that a wall has been out up. He believes that its best for him to stay away from Charlie, all because of his own failures - and Lilith separating from him.
Honestly, I hate how often I hear people say "Lucifer is a bad dad"; because he really isn't. Just because he's an angel, and a dad - it doesn't mean he perfect; thats the whole idea of pride. Its this idea of creating a false sense of worth, of trying to seem as if you're perfect when you know for a fact you're flawed. People who say Lucifer is a bad dad clearly haven't dealt with parenting, it isn't easy. Like you said, its the hardest job no-one teaches. I may not have a kid of my own, but I was the one who raised my younger siblings. Thats why Lucifer is a character I resonate with, because like him I look back on what I did as a "parent" and feel awful for not doing it "right".

He didn't stop having doubts, he just made it clear that he was interested and willing to help and support her which is all Charlie really wanted from him. I don't know how to say this but I believe how you tell the truth to someone is as important as not lying to them. When you tell someone the truth, you want them to know why you feel that way and what your intentions are and if you truly care about them, you take their feelings into consideration. That doesn't mean you have to lie, you can tell them the truth but the delivery of the truth is also important.

You can tell when Lucifer is in his elemet because his wings come out. He is an angel. He is spirit. An intuitive. He is a creature of the heavens.
The way Lucifer pops off in the sky -- his imagination -- is what a hyperfeeler is like around people. Adam simply can't keep up with him there and the narcissistic tactics that he uses to prey on others won't work. Every time he things he has Lucifer, the guy just melts into something else because spirit is mutable and insubstantial.
"I'll destroy this idea you cherish!"

Lucifer hit me hard, because my personal life was neglectful at home. I appreciate he's shown in something of a sympathetic (heh) light, because the entire point is people can get better. In a way, it was like seeing my mom get better to me, even though she never did. Being in Charlie's shoes is so hard - when you're forced to pick up your own parent and be THEIR parent. Lucifer stepping up is a huge thing. I really do like the nuance of him.

I love Lucifer's character and the song he and Charlie sing together is so heartwarming. He's the kind of dad I wish I had growing up. Mine was such a narcissistic asshole that it was impossible to have that connection with him. Makes me wish I had step dad like that

Theres a theory that Lucifers ADHD which can play into the him not paying attention charlies proposals and being highly anxious. Him being anxious can make paying attention incredibly hard bc hes so focused on getting back into contact with his daughter and not WHY shes asking for him to be there. He does care but he doesnt know HOW to show it and it can be hard, especially with a background like his. Rejected by HIS father for whatever reason that may be. I feel i can relate to as someone with adhd and daddy issues of my own

also, dissociation! he clearly WANTS to know what Charlie has been doing, but her words simply dont register in his mind. someone on twt made great thread talking about how much they relate to him missing words that someone (Charlie) says and trying to piece together things even he doesnt have full context. like, when she says "what did you think about hotel" and he, who missed the whole convo before, talks about railing.

Charlie and Lucifer remind me so much of my dad and I, who have rebuilt our relationship over the last few years and it’s just… so beautiful to see. My dad is my favorite person. He’s come so far and I’ve grown so much because of him. He supports me so much. I couldn’t imagine ever living without him how I did for so many years. Seeing the two of them grow together on screen was such a wonderful experience. The funniest thing that got me was when Charlie introduced Vaggie to Lucifer and he was like “you like girls! We have so much in common!” Because that is legitimately something my dad said to me when I came out to him. It made me laugh so much.

Lucifer in this show is just a treasure of a dad. His reaction to Charlie introducing her GF had me grinning ear to ear. It is so awkward yet somehow exactly what you expect from a parent supporting their child when they come out.
His just wanting to look cool in front of his kid and then botching his cool one-liner is also such a dad trope.
He may have been absent from Charlie's life (except for a few calls and favors), but you can also see where Charlie got a lot of her personality from.
Charlie and Lucifer both thinking, that none of the other would want to see each other makes me question what kind of parent Lilith was and what led up to their family falling apart. Such a good show 😍
