This is a dream come true for me. I am an ex Post Office Telephones/BT engineer. I spent 23 years or so at Charwelton radio station as a maintenance engineer between 1973 and 1996. THERE IS NO DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT BETWEEN THE BT TOWER IN BIRMINGHAM AND THE BT TOWER IN LONDON. The engineer in the presentation actually and correctly said the BT tower Birmingham communicated with the BT tower in London, but it did so via repeater radio stations at Charwelton, Dunstable Downs and Harrow Weald. Flat Earthers, do you your research fully!
Which sounds totally logical when one has even the briefest understanding of how such things work. But is awesome to hear actual confirmation from someone that was his professional career. And of course Ranty mis-reads far more into what was said then actually said (per his biased pre-conceived idea), and goes on to mis-quote. Molly NEVER stated that BT tower in London had direct line of sight communication with BT tower in Birmingham. What she specifically states was with OTHER towers, she never named which ones. Nor did Molly ever state direct line of sight with all other towers. But that is apparently how Ranty erroneously interprets it. Smh.
Their research is watching people who have misunderstood everything and then misunderstanding them again and copying their video but now with even less understanding

Pretty sure one of them would say something about perspective. I watched Nathan Roberts take photographic proof of a building that was half hidden by curvature and say that 2 more stories should have been hidden according to some curvature calculator, thus “debunking the globe”. He then claimed with a smug grin that the reason he couldn’t see all the way to the ground floor, of course, was because of “perspective”. God I wanted to punch that smug grin off his face so hard. What a tremendous idiot.

I just love his logic: "The towers need a direct line of sight, there's not a direct line of sight between Birmingham and London. Then, why do they work? Could it be that there are other towers in between? NOPE! FLAT EARTH!" You also gotta love how they make a big deal of that lady being an engineer, talking about her as a reliable source. Yet they discredit ALL the engineers who had to take earth curvature into consideration when planing shit...
Yeah wow. There are plenty of places I have been too where it is obvious. One is Muskegon Michigan standing looking at Lake Michigan and believe me when you look at that massive lake it’s very obvious that you are seeing the horizon disappear from the curve of the earth. All you have to do is find a point ahead of you and you can clearly see that it curves downward. The same thing is brutally obvious when I have stood in several places at the Atlantic Ocean be it at the shore in Boston, New Haven, Fort Lauderdale, Ocean City MD, I have seen plenty of places up the East Coast. Oh yeah an I have also seen the same in Vancouver BC and Alaska. Just Alaska by itself shows you everything that you need to know about the shape of this globe thing. There were plenty of times when we were cruising the Pacific Ocean when you could just look forward on the ship and the horizon disappeared. The miles ahead and behind you were so vast because there was at some times no visible land anywhere close to the ship. Hey flat brainers try this sometime. It is mind blowing. All you can see sometimes is ocean. And there were times when all you could see was the top of mountains because they were so far away that because of the curvature you couldn’t see the whole mountain because it was too far away. Huh strange.
I love it when a mans entire argument, his entire *world view* relies on once hearing someone talk about a thing and misunderstanding it completely, and then just relying on that one line forever and ever without actually checking up if his facts are right or if he has all the information. All it takes is just one sentence, and that one misunderstood, and this man bases his entire life around that. It's like something I'd expect Homer Simpson to do..
Like the guy on that Discovery show that devoted his life to researching what he thought were invisible alien creatures called "rods" but then Discovery just used a better camera and it turned out they were just moths lol.
The Flat Earther would probably take one look at Earth, not believe it still, and try to leave the space station thinking they are safe cause the Earth is clearly not real since it is a globe. 🤣

This guy actually infuriated me when he said "just an engineer". We I'm "just an engineer" and I feel the need to voice my opinion on this. Engineers are technically application scientists, we use the calculations and relationships developed from scientific investigation and research to develop solutions. We aren't just some problem solving dogs body.

@@KeithMilner absolutely bang on. I like to explain it is to say imagine a bridge and one end theres a theoretical physicist (a scientist) who is really good at number crunching, experimentation and coming up with theories whilst on the other side you have a technician who is awesome at building things but doesn't necessarily know how to design. An engineer stand somewhere between the two, typically closer to the scientist depending on their area of expertise. One excuse I've heard a lot is that the flat earth is accelerating upward, creating the appearance of gravity. This is the thing with most flat earthers; if you present them with an undeniable observation, they'll just state some concept that _could_ explain it, and even though they have no evidence for this claim, somehow it's enough to convince them that your point is invalid. You might say something like: "If the earth is flat, why do we have time-zones? Shouldn't it be daytime or night time for the entire planet simultaneously?". To which they'll respond with something like: "Because the sun actually functions like a spotlight". Despite the fact they have no evidence for this claim, the fact that it _could_ hypothetically allow for your observation to exist on a flat earth is enough. In other words to a flat earther, a solution that could hypothetically invalidate your argument is equivalent to hard evidence that your argument is invalid. I've actually made the point in the past that this could be used to argue that many flat earthers (and people with similar sudoscientific belief systems) go beyond a sort of Dunning-Kruger effect, and venture in to the realm of suffering from a bonafide delusion. After all, one of the hallmarks of a delusion is that the sufferer will come up with rationalizations to explain away inconsistencies between their belief and actual observation, but just like with flat earthers, this'll be enough to convince them that these inconsistencies don't matter or even don't exist.

@@eddiebruv Makes you wonder what exactly goes through his mind when someone does address his observations or calculations. Does he simply stop reading their comment the moment he realizes that its something that is going to debunk his beliefs? Or, does he read the whole comment and just choose to ignore the point made? How does one not question their own belief, when so many will easily supply evidence to the contrary of it? Is it about the root belief that if they question it, it also questions the legitimaticy of their religious faith, so they must stick to it, even in the face of overwhelming evidence? At night I watched satellites traverse the sky in their orbits. You just have to use your eyes and common sense.
@John Smith And you haven't presented any evidence at all, let alone taken every factor into account. How about the factor that every seafarer, every pilot, every engineer who builds large structures, know that they have to allow for the curvature of the Earth? You're response? "Conspiracy!" I've known so many sailors and pilots and engineers in my life, none of whom had any reason to lie to me, and they all agree that the Earth is a globe. There are simple experiments that you, yourself, can perform to prove that the earth is a globe, but you won't, will you? Or, you'll do them incorrectly, and then claim that they're fake. You'd have to admit that you're wrong. @Oiled Up And Ready ! no but you can use some rational judgement and decide what is the most likely truth. The earth isn't flat. It's just total nonsense and there isn't a shred of evidence. The reason that scientists don't believe the earth is flat, is because they understand that it isn't and the reasons that it isn't. It's not a conspiracy, they aren't just trusting what someone has told them as you believe. The reason you need to trust someone else on that is that you don't understand the science. You would be better spending your time understanding the science. However, I don't believe that you will because actually your problem is much deeper than that. You should seriously look into why that is and find the root causes.
look at the comment at 6:41. GPS app used to “prove” the flat earth. hmmm i wonder how a GPS system would work on a flat earth if it requires satellites to use GPS. hmmmmm
If the earth was flat you would only need 3 satellites for GPS. Heck, they could even be terrestrial transmitters, sort of like LORAN. Unfortunately, the G stands for "global" and an entire constellation of satellites are required for coverage.

I've got qualifications in telecommunications (which include classes where you are taught about the curve of the earth and the limitations it imposes on broadcast distances) and I certainly wouldn't want to be quoted as an expert on Civil Engineering.
Eh? But she's got degrees and stuff and Ranty thinks something she said supports his loopy notion. Qualifications are very important to flerfs at times like this but normally they are ignored when the expert in question is not saying anything that can be twisted to prop up some flerf nonsense. Space comma.
You beat me to it. Civil engineering and telecommunications engineering are two vastly different entities. I am a radio amateur from the Netherlands and there is a reason we have these repeater networks on the 2 meter, 70 cm and 23 cm bands, it is because of the curvature of the earth. I speak to a friend almost daily via PI6HVN, a repeater about 19 km from here. We are about 34 km apart so we cannot talk to each other directly even if we would both climb on our roofs. But by using the repeater in the middle we have a perfect and static free connection even if we are both on ground level. Given that this country is one of the flattest in the world it shows that the earth in between blocks a direct signal and is indeed a sphere. Dan, it is not clear what you meant by 'scatter' because that is a very general term. We do use E and F layer (upper atmosphere) reflections a lot for long distances but that is on HF up to 30 MHz, the 6m (and sometimes even 2 meter) band, around 145 MHz. The E layer reflection does not happen often and is unpredictable and that is why we call them sporadic E aka Es. For frequencies of 1 GHz and upwards it is impossible to reflect against these higher layers so you do need a direct line of sight at all times. With repeaters in between if needed of course. Nice video, keep fighting ignorance.

I can guarantee that the line of site maximum would be 30 to 40 mile, and this would be in the 7Ghz range, one one of the large dishes. I used to install these all over the UK. Mobile phone operators still use microwave dishes to link a lot of there towers together. As part of the back haul for traffic, moving more to fibre now, due to high data demands. There is no direct link / line of sight between Birmingham and London. As part of my job was line of sight surveys, and there are a number of towers running down the country. As for the lady speaking in the video, she was just speaking generally and isn’t a radio engineer, so probably doesn’t fully understand the terminology used, when describing a microwave hop. We might have to install several hops/links to get transmission from one site to the end site.
I'm a general idiot and even I knew the towers couldn't communicate directory to each other and likely used some method to bounce the signals back and forth while boosting them. The nearest comparison I can think of that Joe Bloggs can mimic in their own house is Wi-Fi boosters (again I'm not clever about this but I suspect modems use a different wave form for Wi-Fi).
Well, she never really claimed that the two towers mentioned had direct line of sight, only that the backbone network was based on line of sight. Ranty is the one who connected the wrong dots, so to speak.
I was going to post something similar. This sort of LoS microwave link wouldn't work between London and Birmingham without repeaters on a flat plane either: the absorption would be too high, and alignment would be a nightmare. By the way, I'm a Telecommications Engineer too. I used to work for C&W and Mercury Communications and was trained on Microwave LoS systems (amongst other things), and worked on the Mercury "figure of eight" National backbone, which was a combination of fibre and Microwave links. Our qualifications and experience trump this lady's as we are concerned with the technology of radio propogation whilst she, as a Civil Engineer, is concerned with building structures. She's highly qualified, but not in the subject Ranty thinks she is.
They very carefully stopped the replay of her comments right at that point. I wouldn't mind betting that if you watched the original video she would have said something about that further on, possibly only seconds later. (Ranty, our favorite closet glober, not only is wrong on the workings of the towers, -he also got his numbers wrong. He says that on a flat earth, there would be a direct line of sight. But if you calculate it properly (but we all know, that isn't the strong forte of flerfers) you would see that it hasn't a direct line of sight. The height of the Birmingham tower is given as 151 meters, but that's to the top of the crane on top of it. The height to the highest disc is at a height of aprox. 141 meter. The London tower has a height of 191 meters, with the discs much lower at aprox. 171 (and then I'm being generous). The line of sight therefore crosses the point where the highest elevation can be found (at 63.7 km from Birmingham) with a height of 167 meters at a height of 153 meters. Even if we just take the entire heights of both towers, we come at a crossing height of 167 meters, and that's exactly the height of the hill blocking the direct line of sight. A disc just touching the maximum heigths of both towers, doesn't have a direct line of sight on a flat earth). This is what you get when you team up a house-painter, with a sacked Tesco delivery boy and a taxi-driver without a license and try to deliver scientific evidence. *edit* I should retract this whole comment, because it was pointed out to me that I forgot to include the height of Birmingham above sea level (140 m) and the height of London (11 m) above sea level. As a matter of fact, there is a line of sight on a flat earth model (which obviously and observably is the wrong model). However, I won't delete it, it's wrong and I admit that it is wrong.
That is how it works. Back when I installed Microwave links we started with topographical maps to plot our elevations along the path, determined our tower heights needed on each side (based on the elevation of the two locations) of the path, plus added an estimated 10-year tree growth. Thank goodness for fiber optics.
The values that you are giving are the height above the ground, not the height above sea level. You need to add about 40 meters to the London tower and about 130 meters to the Birmingham tower.

Same web page under the same heading... this guy...
yeah let's not forget that CIVIL ENGINEERING has nothing to do with ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS (RF Applications and Telecommunications ) Engineering how did he miss that ? you don't ask your mechanic who is a mechanical engineer to build you a tower and you don't ask your civil engineer to fix your car and you don't ask a civil engineer how to transmit radio signals

Seriously, I wouldn't bother. She's highly qualified and experienced, but NOT in microwave Engineering. She's a Civil Engineer. Her expertise is in building bridges and buildings that don't fall down (as a gross generalisation). She probably only knows as much about microwave Engineering as she's been told for this camera piece. Having said that, she almost certainly does know that there is a repeater network which the tower has LoS with, and she definitely knows the earth is a globe (because she's smart and educated). But she is, in this context, just a presenter. She's not an authority on microwave Engineering and she's not really even an authority on this specific building: she probably wasn't even born when it was built.
@@KeithMilner Good point, Keith. I fear anybody else's (despite their qualifications) explanation would be easily dismissed as a liar and con artist by ol ranty.

Shh! They don't like to hear the truth Dave.
David Penny nicely done mate
Which sounds totally logical when one has even the briefest understanding of how such things work. But is awesome to hear actual confirmation from someone that was his professional career. And of course Ranty mis-reads far more into what was said then actually said (per his biased pre-conceived idea), and goes on to mis-quote. Molly NEVER stated that BT tower in London had direct line of sight communication with BT tower in Birmingham. What she specifically states was with OTHER towers, she never named which ones. Nor did Molly ever state direct line of sight with all other towers. But that is apparently how Ranty erroneously interprets it. Smh.

@Oiled Up And Ready ! Ready to kick some babies.
@Oiled Up And Ready ! - like god for instance?
They'll use flat satellites 😂
And GPS stands for *Global* positioning system 😂 😂

No insult to the lady in the video, but she's a Civil Engineer not a Telecommunications Engineer, so her grasp on Microwave transmissions may be good, but she's not actually qualified to speak on them.
I've got qualifications in telecommunications (which include classes where you are taught about the curve of the earth and the limitations it imposes on broadcast distances) and I certainly wouldn't want to be quoted as an expert on Civil Engineering.
Right? I'm a pe and I don't pretend to know IT
She may know how to build the tower without it falling down but would no doubt struggle to explain the technology installed in said tower. Also, Ranty, ffs read up on things before making such staggering claims!
@@intux12 Yet still she got the facts right…. requires direct line of sight to radio wave's from other towers or other remote transmitter. Not at any point did she say that those towers need direct line of sight…

I died when he said “ Oh no he’s transforming” 5:08 hahahahaha

How do we know you're not just part of the ball-earth conspiracy?
...or a lizard person
...or a Rothschild
...or something...
Great comment fellow Globe head!🤣
That is how it works. Back when I installed Microwave links we started with topographical maps to plot our elevations along the path, determined our tower heights needed on each side (based on the elevation of the two locations) of the path, plus added an estimated 10-year tree growth.
