    I grew up in the 50s and 60s when women and men dressed so well. It definitely wasn't expensive clothing but everyone dressed with care, looked their best, and never looked like they just got out of bed. I really miss those days.

      Consider yourself lucky! I’m 15. I would absolutely love to wear clothes like you mentioned most people wore. But those blazers and shirts and suit trousers are wayyyyyyy too impractical price-wise now. An H&M suit would be the same price as more simple but higher quality clothes (which weren’t made in sweatshops either). So for now, I’ve got my dad’s old shirt but that’s about it.

    Couture dresses are things of wonder. My cousin got married in Dior in 1959, and my late mother bought one couture outfit every two years throughout her life - never the "high fashion" items because they date very quickly, but the timeless classics - and then got a dressmaker to make a copy in a contrasting colour. She was always the best-dressed mother when I was at school!

    I saw it yesterday and what a sweet movie. I loved Ms Harris and her determination for a beautiful dress. How nice to see an older lady aspire to something special even if at a high cost for her. Her only obstacle is getting the money, not her age, not her station in life, not her lack of social standing, she works hard and overcomes everything. Great lesson in perseverance!

    In 1967 my mom bought me a pair of Christian Dior STOCKINGS- yes stockings, not pantyhose for my Confirmation. They were $6.00- a lot of money back then for kid's stockings. They were white with a lacy pattern. I have no idea what they would cost today. I was as thrilled back then as Mrs. Harris is "today!" 💚🕊️💚

    Looking forward to seeing this film!
    A special piece of clothing can really be transformative. I remember coming across a Georgio Armani pant suit. I was 20 and working in retail to pay my way through college and she was a beautiful pearl grey fine wool gabardine relaxed men's cut. She was also $750! On sale!l and I was obsessed. I would come into the department store where she was hanging and hide her in areas where no one was likely to find her. All was good for about a month and she dropped in price when I was busted by one of the ladies who worked there. Luckily, she understood and hid 'my' suit in the back room until I was ready to purchase. It took another 4 months before lady grey came home with me. I wore her with a white cotton t and black Ferragamo loafers stuffed at the toe because they were too big on me. I had found those at a garage sale. And each time, I felt like a boss

    Christian Dior came to prominence in the UK when Princess Margaret wore one of his beautiful gowns on her 21st birthday. His “New Look” gowns were a watershed moment in history as they signalled a complete departure from the austerity of World War 2 & were very futuristic at the time.

    Interesting how that baby blue dress is so different in different lighting; love it in the white studio as much as in the film's fashion show scene. I wish they featured Mrs. Harris' coat that she wore most of the film -- even though the Dior had the spotlight, her blue plaid coat was probably my fav piece of the entire film! Having seen the Dior exhibit that was touring for a while, this film meant so much more. And the message about meant-to-be, not meant-to-be also resonated (and made me cry!). Great film, and great behind-the-scenes!

    In the You Tube video, does Joe Zee present only the “replica gowns” of the original CD creations? He wears white gloves for this! Juxtapose this with the Marilyn Monroe dress destroyed by KK and Ripley’s! Christian Dior original gowns are exquisite but white glove treatment for replicas?

    • @jimjimgl3
      @jimjimgl3 Рік тому +4

      Most likely the producers of the video want to amplify the idea of the gowns being museum quality (which of course they are not) so hence the white glove treatment. But they are expensive, hand crafted pieces of fashion so careful handling is called for when presenting the gowns.

      Gloves are inappropriate anyway really. Its a farce... with gloves one can't really feel how they are pulling and tugging on the fabric, buttons, etc because of the limited dexterity while wearing gloves. Try texting or putting on a corset while wearing gloves and you will see why those bulky cotton gloves are not at all practical or doing any conservational favors. Nitrile gloves are more de riguer today, hell just washed hands free of perfumes and lotions is good enough. The clothes are pretty but honestly quite boring anyway. The quality of that sequin work is rather...meh
